Is LA'S KKBT starting to try some magic into their format?

Well, I noticed today that so far, there's only two local Jocks on 100.3 The Poettest and Cliff
Winston referred to 100.3 as The Magic. " The magic is in the music". I see Magic 100.3
coming soon.
Correct me if I'm wrong!

Yeah, they're failing, so let's put more Washinton DC in LA.

You know, why don't Cathy Hughes just come out here and be a Jock on the damn thing if she really wants a LA DC station

She can't since she is too busy doing her own show on TVOne...that is if you want to call it a show she is doing on that cable channel. I really tried to give RO the benefit of the doubt, but they have really screwed up and killed The Beat. Question is, will they ever wake up and do the right thing on 100.3, The Beat, Majic or whatever it is called. I would hate to see LA lose its only full power urban station.

I support both Stevie Wonder's KJLH and the Inner City stations in San Francisco and NYC, those stations have it correctly on pat.

RO doesn't, it may have started as a great vision, but a vision can fall apart if is not continuosly sought.

LA won't lose a full market signal targeting blacks, if RO abandons ship, CC could shift 92.3 or Emmis either buys 100.3 or flips 93.9 if things don't improve there, but LA won't lose a full market black stick, the blacks won't let that happen.

Either way though, it will be a sad story, no other market had the effects LA had.

Josh:

I cannot see CC screwing with KHHT at all. Why would they take a station that does an amazing job of reaching a multi-ethnic audience and suddenly niche themselves to go after a smaller audience? Hip-hop has multi-ethnic appeal. Urban AC tends to skew heavier toward African American. Radio One shifted the station to go after a smaller segment of the audience - and musically - an area that was already being served.

And now with Steve Harvey on yet a third station, there's not enough shares to go around.

I was only saying that in the event 100.3 abandons ship and is sold to someone who flips it to something other then Urban/Urban AC. I wasn't suggesting they do that this minute. And even you'll agree RO has to make a decision real soon, this is a 300-400 million facility.

Aside from giving up and selling, what do you think RO should do to fix the problem at 100.3? I'd say drop the syndicated product, have local jocks and focus on currents...there is a lot of good, new R&B product out right now that 100.3 is not touching and that makes no sense at all.

Right now, that is a stick, with probably no appreciable cash flow. As such, it is worth at most around $250 million as a stick.

Well, I think that 100.3's signal is more powerful than 93.9. I can't get Movin very well if at all down
in South Orange County. And in other parts of Orange County such as Foothill Ranch(Lake Forest),
Rancho Santa Margarita. And don't even think about Laguna Beach.

But, 100.3 does come in somewhat better. Not the best. But better than 93.9 Movin.
So I think RO's stick is worth some good dough.

Well, what songs aren't they touching? I hear the new Natalie Cole, they play Kem on occassion, they really play the heck out of Lionel Richie, and such. They are missing John Legend, but the station is designed to be a Classic Soul/Todays R&B mix, it isn't designed specifically for New R&B, KJLH covers that field better anyway, despite being a Class A. And I prefer Stevie Wonder over Cathy Hughes, Stevie understands Los Angeles and knows there is more then just blacks, he's made a pretty good effort to reach out to Hispanics, who aren't thought to typically listen to such a format.

Look all, I'm not defending, accusing(ok, I am ;D) or even beating down KKBT, I'm just saying there's not much that can be done. The Beat is dead, it's Magic for a short while, then after that, we probably will have to rely on KHHT and KJLH/KDAY for our black fix and it didn't have to be that way, but let it be a lesson to black broadcasters, and even to others like David and Rick Cummings, never be ignorant of trends or issues facing you, the RO bunch were ignorant and now have paid the price, it was handed to them by a Reggaeton station.

KXOL came in and really took the P2 Hispanics away from KKBT that they used to get from Power 106. Playing unfamiliar current R&B won't fix KKBT. Adults like songs they know by artists they love. Josh is correct that KJLH has the current R&B covered.

And, keep in mind, for adults we also have KBIG and KMVN that play a decent amount of old school music ...

Current stick value is about $250 million, give or take, for such a signal. The fact that it is a B is what matters, not how it compares with Movin', which is an irrelevant detail as KZLA moved to Wilson as a directional FM. Neither is as good as most of the other B's on the mountain, except for KKLA which is even poorer.

Are you taking into account the recent upgrade at 99.5?

It is still so directional that it requires a waiver of FCC rules to even exist.

Don't know if it really adds value, but 100.3 also has the 100.1 translator out in Sylmar that gives them some better than average coverage in Santa Clarita.

Truth!....R1 dropped the ball!

Majic Johnson

Just like " The Majic Johnson Show " I wish " Uncle Radio One "will just go away . From Boston to LA ... Radio One S-cks !

Clear Channel repositions KHHT from Hot 92 Jamz to Hot 92.3 in the next few weeks. That decision was made months ago.

Stevie Wonder has no allegiance to his own station. He's on with Diana Steele on Hot 92 Jamz right now.

He's promoting his toy drive concert he does every year.

Question is, will he appear on Magic to promote it? :D
