Is Local News Depressing?

There is an article on AOL today about "depressing local news." It talks about 10 major US cities...Phx is not mentioned, but I thought it was kind of interesting nonetheless. :)

I do believe local new is very depressing. I may catch a little of the morning news shows as I'm getting ready in the morning, but for the most part have stopped watching local news. Just too depressing all the shootings, killings and horrible things going on in the world, what happened to reporting good news.

Marya Piani used to do positive stories in the news, I remember her segment Positively Arizona, haven't seen that in a while, but haven't watched local news in a while so I don't know if its still on.

I don't know how news folks do it, I would just hate dealing with all the pain. I've heard so many of them have to learn how to seperate themselves from the local news, but I think it really affects all individuals involved.

Part of me also thinks is rather rude and unprofessional to shove a mic into someone's face who just lost a loved one, but maybe the people want to talk about it, or maybe the stations are just concerned with being #1. Make the claim, last night we were the only station to talk to the victim or victims family...blah, blab, blah.

I get my news from Google on the internet and get to pick and choose what stories I read.

Just too focused on the negative IMHO.

I know it's important to be aware of the news and what not, but I also think like anything else you gotta have everything in moderation.

That's what I'm learning regarding nutrition and the degree I'm seeking a ASU.

Thanks for letting me share.

In the past 20 years, local news has certainly swung toward the flashier crime and death stories. It's really too bad because we miss the more in-depth stories on local and state government, education, and -- even -- true investigative stories. For example, it would really be interesting to see an in-depth story on WHY Phoenix has to cut back services so much. Did they expand too much over the past decade, are police and fire management top-heavy compared to other cities, and what other ways could the city cut costs or raise revenues. Instead, we are more concerned about Kurt's retirement, the latest accident on the freeway, the best cooking in the Valley, and, don't forget, Jimmy Q's forecast (as if the weather is going to be a story 99% of the time).

I'm not a prude, but I think the TV stations give too much information in reporting sex crimes. First, it sounds like they are putting the criminal on trial in the newscast. Secondly, it seems like they are pandering to the perverts in the audience with excessive details about the crime.

By the way, we are talking about the presentation of the news, right? ;)
