Is Mix 94 Turning into a Top 40?

I was listening to Mix 94 today. The station is starting to sound more and more like a top 40. Is it right for Mix 94? I liked the station when they were more modern than top 40. Nickleback, Switchfoot and other core artist like John Mayer, Dave Mathewes, No Doubt with the common eighties song somewhere in between. As of late, I've been hearing weird stuff like the Backstreet Boys, poppy sounds from Gwen Stefani and other pop artist which belong on a traditional top 40 station. Does this mean since Jack is now on air, is Mix 94 going to change to a Top 40 all in all?

That's a good question, but I think if they were to flip, they would just do it, without doing a slow transition. Also, infinity would have to dedicate KLUC to hip hop, otherwise, they'd almost be competing with themselves, which would be a really dumb move. Then again, I'm no pro, see what other people have to say...

I don't think that Mix has changed musically. They still play lots of John Mayer, 3 Doors Down and all the artists that sound just like them. Songs like "Hollaback Girl" and "Incomplete" are on the Hot AC chart. Plus Mix still plays 80s songs, not only on the retro lunch but during regular programming as well. Maybe Mix should move more towards adult Top 40 to fully seperate themselves from Jack, but I don't think they have

I have noticed a new sweeper on Mix that is obviously directed at Jack..."Mix 94.1 playing what you want". Another sister station of Jack, KXTE, runs a funny sweeper, something like "Jack off and turn X107-5 on".

According to the list, baskstreet boys and gwen are on the hot ac charts. They still seem like a normal hot ac.

Agreed. Mix isn't playing anything that's not on the Hot AC chart. Plus they have always played a few songs that sound out of place, for example a few years ago they played an edited version of "Lady Marmalade". Songs like this give them a perception of playing variety.

Focusing on the Backstreet Boys, The teenage girls who liked them when they were new a decade ago have now aged into the Hot AC demo. That's probably why Mix is not only playing "Incomplete" but giving away a prize involving tickets to see them. On the other hand, KLUC was all over the Backstreet Boys in the 90s (probably more than any other rhythmic in the U.S) but doesn't play them today. I would guess the Backstreet Boys are not considered cool among this generation of teens.

Oh, you should hear how L.A. radio reacted when KCBS switched to Jack FM. KLOS did a nice little bit on the other album-rock/classic rock stations that existed since KLOS first went on in 1969, and have since left the airwaves (one of which was the legendary KMET 94.7 and you can't forget KNAC 105.5). Star 98.7 did a "OnStar"-esque commercial in which the caller complained about Jack FM playing what they want, and the operator assured the caller that Star played what the listener wants to hear. Funny stuff.

Tony Bruno made many references to Jack FM here in L.A. on KMPC for a while, and even KBIG got into the anti-Jack FM act.

So the Vegas stations did pretty much what the natives out here did, and I'm sure there are other cities like San Diego, San Francisco, New York, and others who did the same.
