Is NBC dead?

Speaking of fourth place finishes, you might want to add KHNL/Honolulu to that list. And now that Raycom is about to make that SSA deal that will bring KHNL, KFVE, and MCG-owned CBS outlet KGMB under one operation chances are KHNL's newscast will be toast and not even NBC's lineup will save them.
This will NEVER fly past the FCC. Why? Simple. Honolulu isn't a big enough market for a duopoly (Even a mapped VHF-VHF one since KHNL's RF channel is still channel 13 I believe. Or was it somehow mapped to Channel 8??).

Speaking of KHNL & it's use of virtual channel 8, I could never figure out why they went that route before everything went digital since their RF channel was (And perhaps still is?) Channel 13. They could've been just as competitive by calling themselves Hawaii's News 13 or something similar as they are/were with Hawaii's News 8.

What did/do they hope to accomplish by doing this? Block KUAM 8 on Guam, owned by Pacific Telestations, Inc. from being received in Hawaii (Like someone is really gonna notice)??

Just my opinion.....

Cheers :D

You have to remember though even during the darkest days at NBC in the 70s, they still had Johnny Carson which was bring in over 25% of the networks revenue. They also had Gary Coleman who was adding another 15% to the network. Between Coleman and Carson those two carried NBC through those "dark" 70s and 80s till Cosby came along.

Is NBC dead? Doubtful. I recall people on this board saying how ABC was going to tank and give back Saturday night to the local stations. Then along came "Desperate Housewives" and it turned around.

"Desperate Housewives" airs on Sunday. ABC fills Saturday
nights in the fall with college football, and mostly with movies
the rest of the year.

Actually, KHNL (which still has channel 13 as its RF channel) uses the News 8 branding because channel 8 is their cable channel position on Time Warner Oceanic Cable. It has been at that position during its days as a independent and as a Fox affil. In fact all of the OTA stations in Honolulu are assigned to different cable channels in the system's lineup: http://www.timewarnercable.com/CustomerService/Clu/Clu.ashx?linkid=30

As for that planned SSA, you're not the only one who thinks this idea is a big mistake:

If it comes down to that or shutting the station down altogether, the FCC will approve the deal.

Simple. In Japan and China, and likely among other Asian peoples, 8 is considered a lucky number. A man named Toyoda changed the name of his company because writing the character for "Toyota" requires 8 strokes instead of the 10 that Toyoda does. (http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2009-01-19-toyota-sales-slide_N.htm) Hawaiians are mainly descended from the Japanese.

In the LA area, many in the Asian community protested when they split off area code 818 into 626. People had intentionally moved to the 818 area code for good luck. BTW, Hawaii is 808 - I don't believe that's by accident. And Asian people traditionally hold very high regard for numerology. My many Indian co-workers certainly do. (11 is considered a very auspicious number in India.)

Growing up about 90% of my viewing was on NBC...I loved it. The Today Show circa 1970 with Frank Blair doing the news (yes, real news on the Today Show!) made me want to pursue a career in broadcast journalism.
"Frank." "Thank you, Frank." And he did the weather too.

Great theme song, too. Too bad the "Godspell" people had to sue. Aren't hippies supposed to be carefree?
