Is New Mexico discussion dead?

ABQRADIO hit the nail right on the head, too many hateful comments. One recent exchange here, involving an R/D member's toxic, sour grapes attack against his former Albuquerque employer approximately one year ago, was banished to TIO, and rightfully so. Disclosure: that exchange involved me; I chastised that poster for airing his laundry, and warned him/her that he/she was risking "blackballing".

Other senseless hate chats: an on-going acid-tongue campaign against one of New Mexico's finest and most successful morning show hosts, Larry Ahrens. Some of those comments were unprofessional and wreaked with the stench of professional jeolousy.

NEW MEXICO was the board I first opened when joining R/I in 2011. My radio career began in Albuquerque, so I was thrilled to engage in a conversation about the good ol' days. Warm and refreshing memories were shared of legendary "DJ's" of the '60s & '70s, some of whom I worked with myself, like Carl Bell, and the now departed Frank Reagan and Paul Britt. There were a couple funny stories about Bobby Box too. That little give-and-take began to dwindle, as all good things do, with the passing of the thread's most colorful "co-host", Gary Diamond.

Since the silencing of that nostalgic thread, I still shop around NM, occasionally finding and joining topics of interest, but often feeling disgust at some of the juvenile sniping. I hope that changes.

Some justified..some not. Some true..some not. Some funny ...some not.

I wish you folks well is getting your board up and swimming again. I would name pastirchak as lifeguard and get into the swim.

For those of us living back east, New Mexico doesn't come up on our radar as often as some states. Years ago I worked with a radio guy named Bob Luningham who came out your way. I was saddened to learn last year that Bob had passed on. Other than the fact that Bob went there for a radio job, I didn't know if New Mexico had any radio stations or not. Other than KKOB... I don't know that I ever come across New Mexico call letters.

But it is good to know that the rumors over here in Appalachia are false. We had heard that Bill Clinton lost New Mexico in a poker game one night with Robert Byrd of West Virginia and NM had become part of the Appalachian Trail. Darn. You just can't trust anything you hear on Talk Radio these days. ;D

Yes, there has been very regretfull posts in the past, and we all hope they remain in the past.
Hopefully we can refresh this site with respectful discussions about radio in general, radio peeps, and cogent thoughts about the state of radio here, and everywhere.

Pastirchak, LIFEGUARD? ??? Sounds fishy... And you heard wrong about Clinton. He didn't lose that hand, he won! Cost Byrd his prize violin. Clinton's been fiddling around ever since...

If we have one person on the board from each station group in NM, how many total people is that? Not enough to fill a large restaurant I suspect. In addition, not a lot of format changes or personnel changes (except for losing staff). Leads to a very quiet board.

That's a good point. That on-going thread I mentioned of a few years ago had lots to talk about, since most NM stations of the 60's & 70's were the only principals in the local market representing their owners, i.e: Hubbard (KOB) and Doubleday (KDEF). Don't remember KQEO's status. KPAR was owned by an Arizona venturist, KZIA was a owned by the Deme family, KGGM, the target of many, many hysterical Tom Dunn (KOB) jabs, was another family outfit, owned and operated very nepotistically by the Hebenstreit clan, or, as Tom used to say from across the street, "the Hebenstreit zoo..." That's about all I remember now.

Actually, Albuquerque is still one of the most volatile markets in the country in terms of format changes. There was recently a change at 104.7, and there's been nary a mention of it here.

In the mid-90's, Albuquerque had the most stations per capita, which meant small shares per station and lots of format changes. I believe it still holds that honor, though Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs were close, too.

Indeed, the formats are moving around, as follows:

The Clear Channel Classic Country format moved from 104.7 to the 98.1 translator that CC acquired from Maria Candelaria for $170,000.

104.7 moved to a Clear Channel "Premium Choice" Classic Hits format, one of the CC formats-in-a-box. No live hours, very 70's-based.

Clear Channel upgraded thair 100.9 translator and have The Edge 104.1 on it.

Today AGM goes with a promo loop on their upgraded 102.9 with a new format starting next week.

The 95.9 translator now has KIVA 1600 talk programming on it as of about two weeks ago.

Magic 99.5 KMGA continues to go younger with their format, to move their age-range down more into 25-54.

Gotta be moves and changes not covered here - anyone else??

Now that's more like it.

Having left Albuquerque so many years ago, I had no idea the local market was so fluid, although I can share with you that The Duke City, small though it was in the early 70's (pop. approx 24,000), has always been a tough and competitive radio market. Thanks for posting informative, useful stuff, the kind of info we should be sharing on this board. Hopefully this will generate some rewarding, mature dialogue.

AM 840 is on the air this afternoon, the former 860 Belen, simulcasting Z 106.3 at least for the moment. Good signal up 528 into Rio Rancho.

KARS-AM 840 is on the air permanently as of this afternoon. It will act as the "parent" station for the AGM 102.9 translator. The promo loop is on the air now, and the new format will hit Tuesday at noon. Stay tuned!

Albuquerque does still have some locally owned stations.
Help me out here, but I believe 730 AM, 1240 AM, 1510 AM, 1550 AM and 1600 AM.
FM's are fewer because the cost more but 101.7 is local. Calvary Chapel stations are local.
KANW and KUNM. I am calling it local if they are New Mexico Corporations.
Is this an average amount for this size market?
