Is Oldies 700 making a comeback?

This was a good little station. Which leads me to my next thread!!

Dear Radio Lover, Alabamamic and Tom O'Brien,
I know you're all the same person trying to drum up interest in a god awful format on a frequency nobody cares about. Stop trying to fool somebody. You remind me of Jack "I'm gonna take the world by storm all from my low watt AM oldies station" Gale. If you don't use the same password, you can have as many login names as you want, right TNM, omgl?

How can it be a "god awful" format? Isn't that term an oxymoron? God isn't awful... :)

Funny. You dont know me and I dont know you. All I know is I saw this thread and posted my thoughts on the station. I dont know about the signal it had, as I only listened via internet and it sounded very tight.

In reply to "petuniabud":

There is only one "Tom O'Brien" and that's me. Why would anybody get upset about someone asking if Oldies 700 might be making a come back? I worked there and had a great time doing it. I was proud of what we were able to build and for many reasons, already discussed in this forum, the station did not make it. Jack Gale wanted to have one last "hurrah" in the twilight of his 60 plus years in the business. He had a good idea; good, clean, fun personality radio. Was the 700khz daytime-only frequency in Dothan, Alabama the best place to do it? No. But he gave it a shot and in the station's short life, there were listeners both on 700khz and the internet that appreciated what we were trying to do.

I really miss Oldies 700 and the people I worked with. I alone put the website back up. It has nothing to do with Jack Gale, Kevin Larkin or Chris Morgan. I have been kicking around the idea of starting an oldies stream called "Oldies 700". I would use elements from the old station including the music and jingles and maybe a personality liner or two. I believe there are still people out there in "radioland" that would enjoy listening to a station like that. Any comments would be welcome.

Just so everyone will know, the new Gospel 700 and 100.1 The Truth is scheduled be on the air in early July. Check it out, if you get a chance. Thanks.

First I'd like to say that I was unaware that my mother had tripletts. I live in Indiana, and while passing though on my way to Panama City Beach I got the chance to hear am 700. Then I listened on line and would play their stream on my 1mw transmitter for the neighborhood. When they stopped streaming, my phone rang off the hook wanting to know what happened.
Anyone who loves radio and was arround in the 60's could only appreciate the effort that Jack and his staff did on am 700. There will always some wanna be who finds fault with what others do no matter what.

i don't care WHO ya are...that's fun soundin' radio!
Have Mercy Tom baby!!....now that's rock n roll...what a delivery...too bad you couldn't package that puppy....EXCELLENT presentation!!
ahhhh ooooooooooooooooooooo!

Oh, Yes! Please bring it back and then they can do like they did last time and give away 50 free commercials to any client they hear on any other radio station in town. They tell the client, "Oh, we pulled your name out of a hat". That way Oldies 700 can get a copy of the professionally produced commercial and then use the competing stations' own production against them to get an order. They pay no royalty fees on the production library. They pay no talent fee. They have no time investment. It's a great scam. Wish I'd thought of it. Oh wait, I'm not a liar.

Petuniabud, what's your problem? Seems to me you're making a fuss about nothing. You obviously know nothing about what was going on at Oldies 700. Most of the production was done "in house". If I remember correctly, we only used a couple of pre-produced spots (one of those was Budweiser, a paying client.) stuff How do you know who was paying or not paying for airtime? Comment all you want about the signal, the on-air presentation or the music, but knock it off with the rumers and half-truths about the internal affairs of the station. If you want credibility, give me facts. You say you're not a lier. Who at Oldies 700 lied to you personally and what was the lie? I sign my real name to my posts because I have nothing to hide. How about you? The ball's in your court. Tom

I like being anonymous. I get to gossip about all the stations behind a cloak of secrecy. You know, like when you and Marv were Tom and Jerry back in the day. I know you. I also know for a fact that one of my clients had this little trick played on them by either you or Jack, so don't tell me about half truths. Maybe you didn't know, but it happened, captain. The only problem was, you and Jack shuttered the station before his 50 free spots got to play. It is still a good trick though. Sounds like one of the BossMan's tricks he'd play back in the day. Hey BossMan, I know people who really did work at WRKO when it was a real radio station. BossMan, you ain't tough enough to work in Dothan or anywhere in Alabama. As for you Tom O'Brien Smith, you can't handle the truth. You can't now and you couldn't back then. So save your histrionics for WWE. Tune in so you can win some of McMahon's Millions. It's still a dirty trick, my son Tom.

I have no idea what you're talking about. You avoided my question. You are a coward. Dear readers of this forum, why do we put up with such nonsense? I formally challenge you Petuniabud to PROVE anything you said. Why so secret Petuniabud? Don't give me "he said, she said". If you have nothing to hide, step into the light and identify yourself and your sources. The readers and I know you won't reply with anything but more nonsense. Remember, the TRUTH will set you free. This is my last comment on this matter. You waste my time and the other readers of this forum. Grow up already.

Question to the readers: Do any of you care about this subject anymore? Tom

No!

My only interest here is the loss of a great presentation and a superb listen whether I was in a rental car on I-10, a hotel room in Germany, or at my home or office.

Answer to your question Tom, NO! To my brothers out there I can only say that am 700 was a terriffic station that I sadly miss. It was like stepping back in the 60's and it gave me a chance to hear a great talen, Jack Gale who I never heard of till then.
When one makes serious accusations they sould provide details to support their statments, but some people use this nice little board to do and say the things they don't have the currage to do in person. Hang in there Tom! Peace!

Hi, my name is Max. I'm from up north and I'm just looking for a decent streaming AM Oldies station with hopes of taking it Gospel, making millions of dollars and converting millions of souls. I don't want to play any commercials, just wholesome Christian Rock and Roll. Perhaps Mr. OBrian can help me.

Enough! This is Jay Braswell speaking, and the "Oh, we pulled your name out of a hat" was all my doing. If you didn't like, Pee-toon-ya...blame me. For the record, the names were pulled out of a box (no hats available), using the Chamber's membership list. The reason for the idea was to get a foot in the advertiser's door, and it damned sure wasn't done to use some other station's production. Jack Gale could out-write and out-produce most that I've known and/or worked with.

Personal health and financial issues caused me to drop the ball and let the rest of the crew down. To be sure, the whole Oldies 700 concept had every card in the deck stacked against it, but the failure wasn't for a lack of talent or effort.

I'd never met any of these folks before joining their team, but I'm glad I did. I regained my passion for the radio business because of an 82 year old Jack Gale's unquenchable excitement.

Oh, as for Tom Smith...one of the most patient folks I've ever worked with. Use me for your punching bag, and leave him the hell alone.

It amazes me how a tiny AM station with a worthless signal and “oldies” format that lost it’s air talent over a year ago is still generating conversation. Where was all the interest when the station was on the air? Does anyone really care whether the station gave away spots or whether it was a scam to do so? Oldies 700 was doomed from day one. Actually before then. I know, because I was there. It would have taken something short of a miracle to make the station successful. Now, if readers to this post enjoyed the format and presentation then let me turn you onto the next generation of Oldies Radio. When terrestrial radio plays a song from the 60’s, other than maybe the Beatles, they call it a Lost Oldie. The music was never lost it just hasn’t been played. That’s where internet stations come in. www.northgeorgiasoldies.com will be the template of what an oldies music format is supposed to sound like. WEEL worked with a library of about 800 songs. Triple that and throw in talent with more than 80 years combined experience that know, lived and played the music and you’ll get an idea of what it’s all about. For those who want to continue to banter about a dead radio station from Dothan, Alabama, God bless you.
