IS one of these in your engineering "Back Room"??

Okay..check one of these out!

It is a very old mic from the late 30's, 40's ..made and used in broadcasting for 50 years..Some of them were re-branded Western Electric..many were called Altec. The model is 639A or 639B. It is an odd combination of a RIBBON and DYNAMIC mic with both types of elements..On the back you can select RIBBON only DYNAMIC only or a combination. They were uber sweet, and when in good shape can be a REAL FIND!

I found one for a great price and bought it last week. It is the exact mic that I first spoke into for money back in the 60s..and I wanted one!

Now there is a company that makes an IN-LINE preamp for this mic called cloudmicrophones.com and I have them sending me one. I want to see if this thing is a good as I thought it was. I am getting it re-ribboned in LA by the good-to-go-to guru of ribbon mics..so we shall see.

If you dig one up in a back room of a radio station..see if the CE will let you have it for a case of Bud Light.

Then contact me..I'll give you 5 cases of Bud Light for it. ;D

Audio samples coming!

Jeff, if you find an extra yoke for one, let me know. I have one (no it is not for sale) but I don't have any way to mount it on a stand. The connector is pretty "special" too....

I'll be curious to find out how you like it. I once worked at a station that still used them on the air. I remember them as "warm and fat" sounding. That was in the days before any mic processing, just the mic preamp built into the board. I think it needs a preamp with lots of gain though, Back in those days 70 db of mic gain was pretty "normal."

WOW. That used to be the production mic at the first station I ever worked for. Can't wait to hear it

we had two of those at WHIN AM back in the early 70's..one was used as a production mic,,the other on a stand was used as a "Live" mic for the sunday morning groups that would wander in with various preachers....the control room mic was an rca model 77...sweet
