Is Pacifica Radio becoming irrelevant?

Several weeks ago I posted my recent problems with Amy Goodman here: http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,67859.0.html but after listening to Free Speech Radio News, Pacifica's national newscast which replace the Pacifica Report a few years ago they cover odd and trivial news events. So I have to wonder if Pacifica is out of sync...all I ever hear from them is WHINING. Hello, whining never solved anything!

Depending on what you mean by "relevant", please tell me this: When did Pacifica ever matter?

Outside of FCC vs. Pacifica (Indency ruling) it's a liberal thing. They've long been a leading voice of our side and were superior to Air America but now they're just out there out of touch. Endorsing arson as a form of civil disobedience? That's anarachy and it's giving our side a bad name.

Now that Air America has good coverage all up and down the west coast, you have to wonder just who all is listening to Pacifica stations.

But even in the several decades before Air America, was there ever a Pacifica station in any market which had more than a tiny fraction of a share of listeners? It seems to me that they've always had more press coverage than an audience of their own.

Outside of Democracy Now and Free Speech Radio News being syndicated, not much Pacifica programming gets much attention outside of WBAI in New York, KPFA in the Bay Aream KPFK in LA, KPFT in Houston and WPFW in DC.

Infact the most attention Pacifica has gotten has been the outlandish stories of implosion and self-destruction inside Pacifica, which is ironic since Pacifica was founded by pacifists.

I've never heard of them.

If it's Pacifica, you've never gone to one of the many, many ultra-liberal colleges. When I went to UCONN, I had a college prof who made it A REQUIREMENT to listen to WBAI--the 50,000-watt FM dump of Communism!

Communism?

Come on Robert Anthony, that's strong. It would be better to label most of WBAI's programming as "extreme left-wing", but not communist. But, then again, I'd expect nothing less from you anyway -- including a response to this post.

I agree that the "5 sisters" are the "big dogs" that set the direction for the Pacifica network; but that would miss that there is also a network of like 200 small community- or college-owned radio stations that broadcast the syndicated Pacifica programming content.

Wasn't it just like 2 years ago, that FSRN was brought back into the Pacifica family, given that FSRN was created out of the Pacifica split several years ago.

Yes that is true. FSRN is a good news operation and carries great human interest stories but I don't care for the main anchor Aura Bogado. She's always mumbling and I often can't understand what's she is saying, not even her own name sometimes. She has been frequently absent as of late so there have been multiple sub anchors, all who have presented the show a lot more clearly than Bogado ever has.

Yes, the question should be was it ever relevant?

Pacifica is hardly a monolithic organization. It's stations are run by activists/volunteers who donate their time, money and effort to (1) Produce shows and (2) Fight with each other (over most anything).

Pacifica off-mic would make a great reality TV show as different groups/teams fight it out for political correctness and to see which team loses its time slot. Pacifica is angry, middle-aged ex-hippies who have gotten too old for the fun part of the hippie lifestyle and all they have left are political meetings and demonstrations confined to the offices of a radio station.
