Is Pop/rock making a comeback?

It seems over the last week or so pop/rock is seeing decent increases...OneRepublic's "Good Life" is rising fast before thier official adds date..."tonight Tonight" is picking up steam...Maroon 5 and Train's new singles have been getting quite a few adds without an adds date...the script's "For the First Time" seems to be getting more love. Just seems there is a huge influx of Pop/rock material this week...perhaps there is too much electro dance pop and people are beginning to tire of it...or perhaps it is just an unusual week.

I like "Tonight Tonight." I think it has the potential to be a hit. It's "pop/rock" sounding, but has a sound that seems to fit with Britney, Gaga, etc. better than some of the other pop/rock stuff we have had. The OneRepublic song fits well with the rhythmic songs also.

I liked "For The First Time" but figured it would be too adult for CHR, nobody around here has touched it from what I've heard.

I could do without ever hearing Train again and be happy. It's hard to tell, since these are established groups and CHR stations may just be adding their songs, they are all out around the time. There are a couple I would like to see hits.

All 4 Chr/mainstream stations in my area are on "For The First Time" including the very rhythmically leaned WXSS.

Since the 1st time I heard OneRepublic's "Good life" I thought that had the potential to be huge...I also agree about "Tonight, Tonight"...I see the hit potential in that.

I also believe one possiblity could be the success of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep". I do not think she is going to end the rhythmic sounding songs as suggested by a poster in another thread...but it could be she is allowing for other non dance pop songs to be given a chance.

All this is a result of the Cumulus block moving back towards Hot AC and adding these songs in the past two weeks - there are 12 Cumulus stations (maybe a couple more?) all nearly identically programmed, and two weeks ago Cumulus made the decision to add the new Maroon 5 and Train songs even though they didn't have adds dates

So if pop/rock is making a comeback, they have Cumulus to thank for it lol

Aaah, looks like they're back at it with Q100. I forgot about Cumulus and their CHR's....I wonder if they will do this to the Citadel CHR's? What's the purpose?

I remember their Hot AC/CHR hybrid/whatever phase with Q100 in Atlanta was pathetic a couple of years ago - they were trying to compete so with Star94 that they were terrible with breaking new music and were even including 90s songs. Finally got it somewhat like a CHR and now they start messing around with it again and I guess their other CHR stations have to suffer....

Or maybe people will like it and their ratings will go up...

Are the Cumulus CHR's playing the rap parts of songs (like in ET, Down, Tonight, etc)?

On some songs they do, but on others they don't. On the ones I can pick up from neighboring markets, they do not play the rap on "On the Floor" (the version with no Pitbull is garbage, he is really the one that made that song a hit IMHO) "I Like It", "ET", "Break Your Heart" or "California Gurls" but do play the rap on "Tonight," DJ Got Us Fallin In Love" and "Down".

^Yeah, Q100 plays more dance stuff now, but I think they still try to avoid rap when they can get away with it - Star 94 has a history of editing rap out of everything (including Linkin Park's new song), so I guess Q is still watching them...

I wonder how many stations are playing The ET version without Kanye...Radio Now in Milwaukee does...IMHO Kanye was not needed...stations would have played the song anyway...the song sounds more organic without him as that was the way it was originally recorded.

I agree about "on The Floor" I don't think J-lo is going to have another song on her cd match that success. She got lucky with Pitbull.

That's funny that they are including the rap versions of some versions but not others. I would think the rap in "California Gurls" is much less offensive than that in "Tonight"...odd. ???

I swear B93.7 in Greenville is playing both versions of ET with the Kanye-less version in lighter rotation. I wonder how many stations are editing the rap part out for content. I was a little surprised they let "d---" over the air in this conservative market.

Overall, I don't really have a problem with what Q in Atlanta is doing if it helps them compete, but I think it's stupid to duplicate what they are doing in Atlanta in Indianapolis, Houston, Dallas, Kansas City, Nashville, Myrtle Beach, etc. where they may not have a Q/Star situation. These stations have their own PDs, why not localize the music a little more?

Y101 Jackson plays the Kanye-less version. They also play the Kanye-less version of "Pretty Girl Rock".

I couldn't agree more.

Localized music playlists is considered a radical idea at Cumulus.
Next thing you're going to tell me is (gasp!) that you also think they should all have their own separate night jock rather than just relaying the "amazing" Billy Bush.

I've read hate towards Clear Channel on these boards for years, but even their smaller market CHRs are somewhat localized and have a couple of local jocks. A Clear Channel or Citadel CHR in a 50+ market normally sounds better than one of Cumulus's in a top 10!

No, I don't see why they shouldn't have a night jock - instead of voicetracking mid-days, they should move their Billy Bush to mid-days and bring somebody in for nights.
