Is Power 105.1 going Rhythmic?

Just a matter of time Lemon Jack will Trash this station( Power 105 ). Jamn 94.5 ( Boston ) get good ratings by Default( Only Rhythmic station in the area ).

JerseyDude,

Why would Clear Channel move Power 105.1 WWPR to a Rythmic leaning format with WKTU already doing that?

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

Kevin,

I understand where you're coming from. The ONLY reason I could see this happen are due to different demographics. 'KTU caters well to the "soccer moms" and since hip-hop has been dropping in regards to music sales, perhaps going rhythmic would be the only way to keep that same audience onboard and at the same time expand their music to include some aspects of dance.

However if Power 105.1 does this, I see a strong urban lean with dance in there whereas Pulse combines both urban and Top 40 at the same time with dance. But I'll be honest, I'm rather apprehensive about 2 stations doing similar format. I can't help to think about the 'KTU/Mix 102.7 "competition" which purged out one station and made the other go rhythmic A/C.

KTU is Rhythmic Adult/Oldies. It's your great-grandmother's Rhythmic Station.

A Rhythmic station wouldn't play Donna Summer (1000 times a day).

Everyone is making very good points, but I think CC would be putting themselves in a tough spot if they expand Power too much. Let's not forget that aside from KTU, CC also has Z100, which is currently performing as strongly as it has in a very long time. I don't think they want to put either station in a position where they might eat into each other's audiences and hurt all of their overall numbers. At the same time though, hip-hop stations' numbers seem to be on a gradual decrease, even without the PPM, and I'm sure CC would like to do something before it's too late.

You radio people in NY are in for a real treat... just wait until you hear Geespin on the wheels...

He is one of the best mixshow dj's in the country. A huge loss for Beantown. :(

Has anyone noticed HOT97 the last few weeks? They have been moving Back to Urban again. Artists like Leona Lewis(Bleeding Love), Baby Bash(Cyclone), Gym Class Heros(viva la white Girl), Madonna(4 Minutes), Pitbull(anthem), One Republic(Apologize), Danity Kane(Damaged), have been dropped from the playlist in the last month, only getting limited play during mix shows. Maybe Power and HOT are swapping formats. HOT97 Slogan changed From "where Hip Hop Lives" to "HOT97 is Hip Hop and R&B" Rhythmics Usually Don't have "R&B" in their Slogans.

Here in Boston, Rhythmic Jamn 94.5 use The Hip Hop and R&B Slogan.

That's why I said usually :p

How does Jamn sound. is it really a Rhythmic? or is it Urban but Tagged Rhythmic?

too me it looks like the Latter.

Yeah jamn is definitely more urban. Though the play list is limited and somewhat dated.
As for Geespin he's a good mixer. I don't think he's going to ad anything that the other
hip-hop mixers are already doing.

Does any of this with WQHT-FM have to do with the morning show as of late?

Hard to tell because Big Boy's Neigborhood is based at a FULL Rhythmic station Power 106 in LA. I would have thought Hot97 would have shifted to sound more like Power 106

But back to the topic of Power 105.1 in NYC. I seen an interesting little blurb in AllAccess

"CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40/Rhythmic WJJS/ROANOKE Morning host RICH MINOR has stepped down to take a yet to be announced gig in NEW YORK"

Hmmmmmm.

x2 on Geespin, he is insane! He was a refreshing and awesome addition to an otherwise bland radio station at WJMN. He was a strong force in supporting local hip hop here in Boston, too. It's only natural he'd leave. But I suppose it's good he's moving onto bigger and better things. If you're reading this, good luck Gee!!

That may be true, Tony, but now I have a question/concern - isn't 'KTU, at least in part, going thru the same growing pains that CBSFM is going through in its SECOND go-around? Here's what I mean -- 'KTU's call letters are LEGENDARY in the NYC area since the mid-1970's (Paco, G. Keith, etc.) and a LOT of the "soccer moms", I suspect, remember that ORIGINAL 'KTU and its LEGACY - and that's why 'KTU may be, in part, altering its music mix the way it is. Also, judging from hearing it in various stores along my travels, I suspect that 'KTU is STILL trying to make up its mind over what to be....just like 101....

Oh yeah, absolutely!

When 'KTU tweaked their format to a rhythmic A/C in 2006, their goal was to mainly focus on the hits while still keeping the focus on their brand of disco. Of course, no one anticipated back then that another rhythmic station whose focus mainly concerned with today would ever happen, let alone that it happened rather "immediately".

Right now, 'KTU is in an interesting situation. Their ratings have been pretty stable from the tweak up to now. However, from the recent "book", their ratings took a bit of a hit. Not as dramatic as 'RXP, but a mini-hit. Even though Pulse isn't on "the book", there's no question that Pulse has made some sort of effect, even if one can't "see it" in black & white based on the ratings books. Pulse is also using the "New York's Dance Music Leader" slogan that 'KTU once had. So...what would 'KTU do? Stay with the older material and established hits of today (such as Rhihanna, Natasha Bedingfield) or perhaps add one or two tracks that Pulse is currently playing that would have NEVER made it on the current 'KTU otherwise.

They don't want to lose those "soccer moms" but at the same time, despite Pulse's limitations (signal, dial location), there is an effect happening and 'KTU would be foolish to ignore that. So, in that sense, there are newer "growing pains".
