Is "Radar Love" right for CBS-FM?

"Radar Love" on 101.1? NOOOOOOOOO!

CBS-FM is supposed to be a pop-based station. "Radar Love" is hard rock.

Not only that, the station was playing the song on a turntable from a 45 that was skipping. When was the last time a network O&O used a turntable in the on-air studio?

There has been too much rock on 101.1 since the oldies format returned. "Glory Days" in the first hour back. "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" in the morning show the next day. Now "Radar Love" in middays. Pretty soon CBS Radio will have blown off all the goodwill it gained from bringing back CBS-FM.

At least I commute to work beyond CBS-FM's signal area.
 
Hard rock?? Radar Love?? it is a 30 plus year old song that fits perfectly in the classic hits format of this station.
 
Before this discussion gets to the same backbiting level as it did on Herr Doktor's board, let's remember that

a. WCBS-FM is not an "oldies" station, it is a classic hits station

b. The record in question Golden Earring's "Radar Love" was played (from vinyl) during Turntable Tuesday as a special song. It is not in any regular rotation. Neither is the Brenda Lee song "Coming On Strong" (that is referenced within the "Radar Love").

As to Mr. Doll's complaint of the station playing is Bruce Springsteen's "Glory Days" and Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", you have probably not figured out that 'CBS-FM ain't "New York's Oldies Station" these days.

Maybe not "Oldies", but both artists (Springsteen & Benatar) definitely represent the New York listening area as Springsteen hails from New Jersey and Benatar from Lindenhurts, Long Island.

"Radar Love" gvot heavy rotation in the summertime, it sings about driving and listening to forgotten songs on the radio, so I don't see why it's not a good fit.
 
It's not right because it's too "rock". And WCBS-FM is supposed to be a "mainstream hits" station.

Left unsaid, though, is that framed this way, "mainstream hits" is about as much of an accepted, universal, palatable norm in our time as virginity upon marriage. Yes, maybe it is a virtuous concept, but these days, good luck finding such spousal units outside a faith-based realm, and good luck imposing that ideal upon your offspring.

Anyone catch the newswire story about the dentist from upstate NY being sued for injuring a patient while dancing to "Car Wash"? No, not *that* dentist, but...
 
Maybe "Radar Love" is stretching a little too far into hard rock territory, but most of the rock tracks they play fit in just fine with their "station you sing along to" image. Songs like "Glory Days", "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", "Take Me Home Tonight" et. al. are catchy, upbeat, and they're really not all that hard, especially by today's standards. It's not like they're playing AC/DC or Black Sabbath. If anything, I think they need to cut back on the R&B ballads and 70s soft rock tracks.
 
"Radar Love", the 45 edit, is fine. "Family Of Man"??? What is he sniffin? I actually had to go back and refresh myself with that song and remember how forgetable is it. With all the Three Dog Night records out there, you pick that?

BTW: His sample hour is a trainwreck.
 
Actually, I find "Family Of Man" the *most* refreshing song in his playlist for that reason--though it certainly contradicts his "nothing too obscure for the casual listener" logic.

The most hilarious thing, though, is his spelling of the Steve Miller hit "Rock'n Me" as "Rock and Me"...

I read that and since it happened in 2004, I figure that he was digging Christina Aguilera & Missy Elliot's version of the song that came out in August of that year.

Could you imagine going to our friend The Radio Dentist? In the middle of working on your mouth, he keeps stopping to type something on his board! "...oh, hang on...(banging on keyboard) c'mon, people, don't you get it? That movement should never be played on WQXR!..."
 
Given his message-boarding demeanour, I'd be more interesting in seeing how he'd handle a malpractice lawsuit such as this...

I feel the fault lies with the people at WCBS-FM, as if they had only listened to me when I told them not to play 50's music I don't like JACK-FM that the station should not lay no boogie woogie on the king of rock and roll, that a song like "Car Wash" has no place on a classic hits station like 'CBS-FM, none of this would have happened!"
