IS RECENT SUCCESS AT KIIS FM REALLY DUE TO BEING MORE MAINSTREAM?

This is something that hasn't been discussed on this board recently, and I would like to just mention that Ross from the Ross on the Radio newsletter published recently that KIIS was on an upward tick due to becoming a more "mainstream top 40" station compared to the former rhythmic leanings of the station and competitors KAMP and KPWR. Obviously, the ratings don't lie, KIIS is a some of it's best ratings in the past few years but is it all due to their more mainstream offerings? I've compared the KAMP and KIIS playlists and there aren't too many difference between the two. Similar to comparing KROQ and KYSR.

Probably since they're more mainstream and has been releasing new music faster than AMP shows to be a success. I believe they've been leaning more mainstream pop since early 2010? IMO, I like the new playlist since KIIS plays more variety these days and actually play "all the hits".

Many songs that stations list on their playlist don't always get a lot of airtime. It's all in how it's rotated.

'recent' success? hasn't kiis dominated LA for quite some time now?

usually everyone on this board is complaining about how rhythmic they are.

lol.

kiis plays HITS. that's why they win. that's not 100% of the reason... but that's a big chunk.

they play hits designed for the ethnic make-up of LA... and not Wisconsin.

No Nickelback here.

Sorry, I was referencing to their biggest lead in the market since AMP came in and started being more competitive with them. Although KIIS had always remained pretty solid, AMP was starting to be a threat to KIIS at certain dayparts and demos.

Who Has Taken Biggest Hit When Amp Radio Has arrive I Am Guessing Its KXOL FM

Power 106 Is About The Same
KIIS Is Up In Ratings
KXOL Is Down In Cume And Ratings Since Feb '09
KDAY Is Down A little
What Do you Think

KXOL has been dying for years way before AMP. Why though? Here's why:
- weak signal coverage (in most places in the metro 96.3 FM has static in the background)
- dead air in certain times
- excessive amount of competition from the market
- the jocks are idiots/jokes that should've never gotten a job on radio
- poorly ran station
- can't seem to pick a format (CHR or hurban/reggaeton? They play songs that other hurbans like X 96.3 NYC don't play like Ke$ha, Taio Cruz, Drake, Mike Posner and Katy Perry)

Uh, the playlists betweeen AMP and KIIS are two completely different things! AMP plays none of the current soft/rock hits, and they simply copy what's hitting the Top 40 charts on Billboard. KIIS plays ALL the hits! AMP hasn't even touched that new Auburn single, or Shontelle single, along with many other songs that every other Top 40 station in the nation. Give AMP a couple of years, they will struggle because of what they don't touch and the specialty programs they don't have on their station. As much as I keep saying that KXOL will flip soon, they probably won't because they most likely bill well for their standards.

I think when KFI begins simulcasting on FM 92.3, KXOL will evolved into a Rhythmic AC to fill the void left by KHHT.

That's funny because they did choose to use Pitbull's "Pearly Gates" on KAMP. That surely did flop big time. I'm certainly glad to see "memories" by Kid Cudi doing extremely well in California - it's kind of like the Ya Boy "we run la" of 2010. I think KAMP has now gone rhythmic pop. Rhythmic pop stations tend to sound pretty interesting with their mix shows... but our KZON is playing Auburn and Shontelle. It doesn't seem like anyone is really wanting to just come out and play the "memories" record here in Phoenix though.
