Is Richmond Ripe...

Oooh, Just the thought of this... Is Richmond, good ol' conservative Richmond, ready for a radical change. Is Richmond ripe for Jack or a Bob type station. Say...98.9? If so...move over Oldies 107.3, The Planet, Lite98, move over everybody really....Oooh this could be interesting. Good promotionals... IT Could be from a radio station [far far away] just across town...Air Wars!!! hmm, better get my resume`mp3 ready! Hell, I remember when Q started up..oh boy...this could be fun! Would 107.3 follow suit...?<P ID="signature">______________

Any station that offered real variety on the airwaves will be successful even in the conservative, 56th largest radio market. WRIR, with a pitiful 100 watt signal, drew 20,000(!) smackers during their first pledge drive. Imagine if the station had a real signal? I believe the same principles can be applied to commercial radio. It's only a matter of time....<P ID="signature">______________

I agree! Twenty grand...not bad! Yes... It's just a matter of time.
Nineteen years ago my brother and I injected variety into the mix at WENZ AM1450
with mixed then cold reception from management... The audience was hip! Then that format was suggested to a new company one year before they hit air, ten years ago! It was shot down as too experimental. Even the hand picked Dj's Eric E. Stanley, Chocolate Chip Johnston, and Dr. D. & Buckwheat [a popular party dj duo, who are still going strong 25 years now...ok, Buckwheat is my brother!] all were shot down. The only thing that George liked was the promotional image I gave her... "The Heart & Soul of Richmond". Oh, and commercial pricing he agreed with that too.<P ID="signature">______________

I'm sorry...I consider WVGO to be the original "Jack"...Maybe 98.9 will be good

Any station that plays music and is personality driven will be successful. There are already enough drones reading scripts, playing the same 30 songs (pick your genre) on the dial already. Doing something different, ANYTHING DIFFERENT, would be a step in the right direction for listeners and advertisers...<P ID="signature">______________

No argument from me. How is the used car clown? Still flying illegal hull to Highland Springs? Probably legit by now. Only right and bright light is you. I probably would have hired you too! You're good! <P ID="signature">______________

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I've been on the air for 3 years now (almost 2 years on WVNZ & a year at WCLM)and I , as you might well imagine, love doing it.

I love Preston & WCLM. He has never told me what to play and often he turns me on to great music and fills me in on Richmond music/radio history. He has been amazingly helpful. Also, I've learned a lot from Big John, even though I know my program continually befuddles him. If it's outside of country or bluegrass, it's all Greek to him. Still, I can't say enough nice things about the station and the people there. Being on the only non-segregated station on the commercial airwaves in Richmond, is something that warms my heart...

I just wish the station had more range. I doubt anyone would give me the freedom to do my show as I see fit on the larger bandwidths for reasons I believe are painfully obvious. Commercial radio is painting the airwaves one drab color of grey and Caucasian don't play that. I have no interest whatsoever simply being yet another drone reading scripts on a station that is a cookie cutter for whatever genre is deemed to be currently, pause for revulsion, "the hot format". That is a fate worse than death as far as I'm concerned.

Turn on the radio and the gurgling sound of banal conformity is in troubling abundance. That you already know....

Long live Eric E. Stanley....

Long live my friend Eric E. Stanley... When VGO, let him go I asked Eric if he would like to be a part of the new 1450 with me and another brother [in love of music...] Chocolate Chip among others. Eric and Chip were so excited. This was well before the station signed back on in April '96. Lacy wasn't interested. My vision was diverse programming. Just as diverse as the population is. They went total satellite recieved R&B, cookiecutter! Be Bop Boogie Blues Review...a great, great show! I might just have a cassette of that show here somewhere...! I agree with you. Everything is going carbon copy. McDonanlized. PTB, you can have'em. You won't find one of his cars nor his book at my home. Congrats to BJ. They belong together. No, you will not be able to be yourself anywhere else on the airwaves... WRIR is trying to go alittle bit bigger...there's a possibility! But Corp radio...nah! As my friend Shane [the inspiration for me getting into this business] said to me..."Peace be with you always Chris!" Have a great day....go and bring a joyfully song unto the world... I think that's how it goes...lololol later, <P ID="signature">______________

You said it yourself "You Love the man". You're "on-the-air" enjoying the spotlight and all the accolades that comes with it. Enjoy it while you have it. Diversify yourself in other $$$ forms of the business. Act like it's the last gig you'll ever have. This day and time... it might be. As you suggested to me... become the media... Syndicate yourself!! Not much I can say on this website and getting ejected/banned for defamation of ones character. Now you can e-mail me, and I'll give you a boatload. A couple of music groups come to mind and they have distinctive themes in their songs...one The Ojays, the other... Undisputed Truth!<P ID="signature">______________

Probably won't be 107.3 or 100.3 that flips to "Bob, Jack, Sam, Dave", if anyting it will be 98.9 when it eventually stops testing and gets on the air for good. They have been playing a unique mix, although not as various as Bopst! Today, so far, The Eagles, Depeche Mode, Gretchen Wilson, Black Eye Peas and Eurythumics have been heard, among others. At first it was all a mix of what they had on hand for starters, 80's country and jazz.....but there has been R&B, top 40 and alternative on here during the testing of 98.9, which does suggest possibly a Jack.

That seems like a step in the right direction programming wise, but it's still only a small step forward. I guess in this day and age, that is the most to hope for, but the the faceless DJ's still reign supreme. Also, despite the varied song list, it is still top 40 radio and nothing really different at all....<P ID="signature">______________

First off...I don't/never have lived in Richmond. I come to this board to lurk and listen a lot, because I find it refreshing to read the honest, friendly, helpful comments you all write. A welcome change from a host of radio-bashing, name calling tripe on a lot of boards. Thanks! Is Steve Hendrix still in radio in Richmond? I'd like to think so. Radio needs more people like him. Anyway...as far as the comments on "Jack" coming to Richmond... You all have talked about interesting, exciting, personality driven radio, and how you miss it. I've lived in or visited recently three cities with so-far successful "Jack" stations - and all three are jockless. Would that fly in Richmond?

Thank you as well. No, unfortunately Steve is not! He lives in Hampton Roads, and is no longer in radio. We need more like him. Steve's a great guy.
As for a Jack, or Bob, or Mike, It's the same primus as the Q in Q94, or B103, or POWER93 FM..oops lolol even further back Big LEE [WLEE AM] something quick and memorable {image liners too} ...will a JACK/BOB/MIKE work in Richmond, Va. Yes, but DJ's are important too. The #1 DJ in this town for the past 11 years has been Bill Bevins. #2 Catfish... and they are talented people. I'm proud to be even associated with them. I was one of them, 19 years ago. I'm no longer behind the mic. No, I don't see one coming in and mopping any of them off the face of the Richmond map... It might just give some of the others fitz... lolol I'd love to program one and return! <P ID="signature">______________
