Is Rock & Roll all A-S-T radio ever considers?

Like there's no room in A-S-T radio for anything BUT Rock & Roll? Come the hell on, y'all! What about Dance Music (like WKTU) or Urban AC (please, please, please) or Smooth Jazz (bring it back) or even Gospel (for the love of God)?
Hmmm...God willing, A-S-T's next format flip will be to one of these--PLEASE!
Edited by warnoldholmes on 02/13/06 07:57 PM.

It will be only a matter of time when one of the 7 rock stations will succomb to death. Which will fall first? My guess is Q-103.

Smooth Jazz, are you kidding me Holmes? Nobody supported it when it was on 1049, why do you think they will now? Same with Urban, one is fine, thanks!
Dance, yes. By the way, there's major dead air on right now at 104.9, please no more Tina!

FM Talk would of been fine. Bring back Tom Leykis, for God's sake!

Oh well..

Wait a minute!

Like hell one Urban is fine! One size (mainstream urban) does not fit all, AND YOU KNOW IT!

Let's not forget our Spanish Speaking population-more and more every year. A Spanish speaking dance station would have at least a CHANCE of making some money!

It's gonna have to happen in this market. ABC is not interested in blazing any trails;never have, never will

OH F'IN STOP THE BITCHING ALREADY!

And rock stations do?? You bitch moan and complain about how Urban-this ain't Urban-that, yadda yadda yadda, and yet Rock is only rock, there only needs to be one station for that..

This also goes for the rest of you too busy bitching about 7 rock stations in Albany:

THIS IS NOT NEW YORK CITY. THIS IS NOT BOSTON, OR HARTFORD, OR BUFFALO.

ALBANY DOES NOT HAVE THE LARGE MINORITY POPULATION NECESSARY TO FINANCIALLY SUPPORT FORMATS SUCH AS DANCE, OR HISPANIC, OR EVERY LITTLE NICHE OF URBAN MUSIC.

SORRY TO BREAK THIS TO YOU, BUT THIS REGION IS PRIMARILY A WHITE-BREAD AREA, AND THUS THE LARGE BROADCASTERS ARE GOING TO PRGRAM TOWARD THE DEMOS WHERE THE $$$ IS, NOT WHERE IT ISN'T. I KNOW YOU SENSITIVE TEEN AND 20-SOMETHINGS OUT THERE JUST CRINGE AT THE WHOLE RACIAL ISSUE, BUT THATS THE REALITY OF THE BIZ. BUCK UP & GET OVER IT!

And in the name of the sweet Jesus - Please spare us yet another frikkin' post about too much Rock, and go fire up your iPods, or CD players, or internet tuners and get your fix from a more appropriate source. Otherwise, you can personally shell out the $$ to buy or put your own station on the air and program it however you wish. Just dont be surprised when you get can't get any advertisers and your checks start bouncing....

I dont know what you're smokin - but there isn't an ice-cube's chance in hell of that format making dime one in Albany....

Nope, they're interested in making money instead... go figure...

AND...it doesn't take a friggin' genius to figure out that the pie can only be split in so many ways, either!!!!!

There are a whole crapload of advertisers that would never run a single spot on a rock station and the ones that do only have a budget to do it on a couple, maybe!!!

So, grade school math clues you in as to how stupid this was not only from a programming format standpoint, but ALSO a financial standpoint. You have a crappy signal....commen sense would say that the best bet would be to run a format that someone would have to SEARCH for to find. If I want rock I've got fifty gazillion signals now int the Albany market to choose from....and, yes, they are ALL pretty much the same!! And if I want Rock I'll go with the one that I can get in the best on my radio...and that ain't 104.9!!!!
Now...if I liked, oh, say an Urban AC, or a Dance, or an FM talker like Air America and it was the only signal in town, I would search for it and even stick with the crappy signal til I got it in somewhere down the road or in a different room of the house!!!

Comprende?!

Actually there are some pretty significant differences between all of the Rock stations, and the Rock formats in this area.

\"And if I want Rock \"

You obviously don\'t....

They have actually improved that signal considerably, since moving it in, seven years ago. It is much better than the signal of the original Z-104.9. Until you get far out into the rural areas, 45+ miles away, that signal is adequate. As a matter of fact, it seems to pretty much cover most of the territory, that the combined Bone frequencies 93.7/94.5 do....The only truly good Rock signal that completely covers this market, anyway is PYX. Like WZMR, WHRL and WQBK are also 6KW signals. WEQX and WQBJ are more powerful, but are rimshot signals....

Hmmmm....I like rock, but I also like steak...doesn't mean I want Grilled steak on Monday, Pepper steak on Tuesday, Salisbury steak on Wednesday and so on. What Albany Broadcasting did was simply add another type of steak to the Albany radio plate..and...with no seasoning. Again, boring.

Not in my neighborhood

In Clifton Park and some parts of Rensselaer County, sure. I don't know if you've been to A-S-T lately...that ain't English they're speaking! And those big letters on the windshield of the brand new SUV; "PR", don't mean Public Relations, my friend.

Our Spanish speaking neighbors buy quite a lot. And more and more are moving on up out of NYC and into your neighborhood! And they have lots and lots of babies.
WAY more than most.

But we're talking a 6K "flamethrower" (ahem) that changes formats every year. As if THEY know what they're doing! Pulease!

Mark my words. There WILL be an Spanish station in this market-it will cut an excellent niche- and advertisers will go to it! Of course, I'm thinking a slight bit AHEAD OF THE TIMES...but you wouldn't know anything about that......

Well, let's see how the demographic breakdowns look for the cities around here:

ALBANY
White - 63.12%
African American - 28.14%
Hispanic (any race)- 5.59%

SCHENECTADY
White - 76.77%
African American - 14.77%
Hispanic (any race)- 5.88%

TROY
White - 80.22%
African American - 11.41%
Hispanic (any race)- 4.33%

That's the funniest damned thing I've ever read on this board. You make it sound as if the grand plan is to invade and repopulate!

On the contrary - on this very board back in 2001 I proposed that a certain small-watt AM pick up a hispanic language format. But, the reality of the market is that it won't sell well locally, so whatever it is would most likely be reduced to El Ritmo or something similar, and agency sales. There's no companion media to cross-promote it in this market, and hispanic lang. formats are just as splintered as anglophone formats, so you still wouldn't be able to target the hispanic community effectively with just one station. And with an average of only 5% of the urban population (much less in the burbs and rural areas), the investment just won't pay off. Now, I dont have any axe to grind here with any ethnic groups, but outside of Multicultural Broadcasting coming up here and picking a property or two, I'm just not going to hold my breath waiting for it. It has nothing to do with innovative thinking - it's already been thought about.

Re: disclosure

I appreciate what you're saying, BUT

In the interest of complete disclosure, you should note that the stats mentioned were from the 2000 census! I'm telling you, things are changing.

You can't go by census stats. How many white hip-hop "wannabes" are there in the area alone? Sure, they're white...but they're not listening to B95!!

So..I kinda get the point of "ethnic" trends on the rise, but enough of a Hispanic leaning population probably isn't viable for some time, even with the state of migration from the city.

Re: disclosure

Hey, a spanish station is at least as good an idea as YET ANOTHER rock station....at least it's interesting! Since people seemed to be pulling ideas out their you-know-what, that's my contribution! Direct from my you-know-what-to-you!

:>)
