Is Russ Martin losing his touch?

He seems to be tiring out. There's not much more that he can say about himself, in my opinion. He says, 'Are we ready for a break yet?', about 5 times an hour as if to say, "I don't have anything interesting or funny to say, so we may as well go to commercials." I think he'll be gone by mid-year next year.

Any thoughts?

All I want to say is where is my Russ Martin bong I won on his show? It never came in the mail. Bummer :'(

Well a good long streak has come to an end.It was nice not having aRuss Martin Thread for awhile. Russ will remain on 105.3 for a long time. Its the only thing that station has. So enough attention to him on the thread, and move on.

I used to think the dead air was funny, and that the jokes told when the mikes were off were cute, and the fumbling co-hosts were slightly amusing.....now I just think it's time for it to be over....sort of like a suffering animal squirming on the side of the road. :)

Come to think of it, my x-ray glasses and ?surprise gift? never arrived either :D

Russel needs to quit playing with the delay button and turning the mics off. If he has something to throw down or wants to say, he needs to suck it up and head to sirius or xm,where he can. This whole double entandra/grey line "naughty" radio he does quite frankly is old and tired. Like the man once said "Its all been done"

I think you(trickortreatise) need to be put outta your misery by JD's bunny board. Russ' show is the most creative show out right now and most if not all of the posters on this site wish they had his show. So shut ya yap and change the station if ya dont like the show.

Board Monkey, I don't wish to have his show. There are better things in life, and that ain't it. "Creative"? When you do the same thing over and over and over and over again, how is that being creative? Going to a bar with a pad of paper and writing down liners? Giving the image that you can tell a GM and PD what to do? Wasn't that in Howard Stern's Movie "Private Parts'? So how is that being creative? He wins by default, because his competition (if you want to call it that) is weak. He makes KRVA sound cutting edge.

One of the interns sent your "surprise" gift to me, by mistake. ;)

Come'on KPLEX your just saying that to say that. Your also making a BIG mistake by comparing Russ to Howard. You seem to have missed the White Trash Party, Listeners Founadation, Operation Kindness, and the Hero's Parade. Did Howard do that? KPLEX I'm sure you practice your liner cards that your PD gives you in a bar wishing for better days. Or you are strapped to a board running syndie. BTW his lack of "Creativity" has givin him the opportunity to live in a very nice home, drive some cool cars, and own some cool toys. I can't think of anything better than that! Why did you get into radio? To work for an hourly wage and barely get by paycheck to paycheck. His competition is 30+ radio stations in Dallas, XM, SIRIUS, the internet(just about every station has a webcast now) and cd's. Damn and people wanna listen to his show. WOW what can it be. Maybe creative entertainment?!? There is a reason We no longer say "Flex your plex, KPLEX" they suck!!

Well at least tell me what it was???? :-\

I've never really understood the allure of Russ Martin. I don't listen often but when I do, it always sounds like a Best Of show. He always seems to be talking about the same things. I can never tell one show from the last, even if I haven't listened for a month. The staff kissing his ass, they hysterical laughter at every supposingly funny thing Russ says, mocking management, talk of his money and ratings is all soooo old. And if they happen to stumble upon an actuall funny bit, they'll play and discuss it endlessly... for days. It all makes for some really dull, predictable radio.

Board Monkey. Who's comparing him to Howard? He's "Borrowed"from Howard. A lot in fact. Howard does a lot of charity work himself. I am not a fan of Howard either."Operation Kindness","Heroes" is very worthy of Russ and I commend him for it. I have done my share for "Operation Kindness",and still do from time to time. It's pretty ridiculous of you ASSuming I work in a bar, etc. I own a nice home, pool ,etc. and I do far more than read liners, etc. 'nuff said.

You disagree with my comment about Russ, leave it at that. Apparently I am not alone in my opinion about RM. RM is wall paper,he has grown stale over time.
105.3 will not get rid of him anytime soon, because they do not have anything worthwhile to replace him with. Second as I outlined before,he has no competition in that time slot.

You like Russ and his repetitive "bits"(if you can call them that).
Russ wins by default, and that sums up radio today.

Seeing that alot of the "Live" format stations are tanking in their respective markets, I have a serious feeling that he'll jump ship from this business once his contract is up and pursue something else.

...and have to sell the batmobile to eat? I think the 'king of all media jr.' will be around forever.

-or at least hopefully long enough to replace eric harley on the MRN.

I have read this board for quite a while, and I do not usually post because I do not like to offer my opinions ham-handedly.

But in this case, I feel I must.

I don't agree Russ Martin is "losing his touch" or even "tiring out."

What Russ Martin has done is do a show exactly the way he wants to do it, with the people he wants to work with, and management forced to allow him thus because of historical ratings. Which one of you, when you started in radio, wouldn't have given your left whatever to have just that?

Having been in his studio, having seen a show run-down, his "are we ready for a break yet?" and "who's on the hotline now?" as well as the rest of what seems an indifferent approach to time, or going to a break, is very carefully orchestrated.

He a master at making a show not sound like a show. He has made ratings history in DFW, and is the only one who can bring Chapman into the studio and call him a "bag of piss" to his face, and Chapman joke around back with him.

Indeed, Stern paved the way for shows like Russ, and even whole stations like 105.3. But Russ does things Stern did not, like getting the joke across without actually saying the word. That is not double-entendre. Stern did not do that verbally, in such a creative way. Russ is a master at dancing on that edge--verbally.

I guess the "stale over time" comment is a matter of opinion, but listen...really listen to Russ, and study what he's doing. I learn something new every time I listen to him. And I haven't been in radio that long.

I've gotta say, Board Monkey is right on this one. That show by far is the best out there. The numbers show it, and the toys he has proves it. It's also great that he does so much with so many organizations and even started his own to help police and firefighters. His show is the anti-broadcaster show, and that's why people love it because listeners aren't subjected to the normal topics involving politics and hearing a blow hard host rant on and on about how we should either leave or stay in Iraq.

I don’t normally catch Russ’ show. However, from what all has been said about what he does on his show, is (in my opinion anyway) similar to what David Letterman always did during his NBC years. Stuff like “How much time do we have?” jokes was quite common in that era. I found that type of content quite hilarious, because even though I am pretty sure they did have some sort of system, Dave made it seem like they didn’t. I personally think that’s a tough act to pull off gracefully and effectively. If Russ can do it, more power to him. I don’t necessarily wish to have Russ’ show, but I sometimes wish I had that level of freedom.

Well, I'm glad to see that some of you agree with me on the stale factor of Russ and his show. I expected a little of both sides of the subject and that's what I got. Thanks to all who responded so far.

What is 'well orchestrated' is that Russ reminds listeners that there is a method to his madness with regard to making the show sound thrown together but prepared ahead of time. Now, take out the belief in that theory and listen to what is actually being put across the airwaves and you will find that he's not preparing much for the show and is basically too lazy to formulate any good bits anymore. I used to believe that he intentionally made the show sound 'off-the-cuff' but I'm not a believer anymore. I just find him to be talking about nothing and repeating himself more all the time.

Don't get me wrong, I have loved some of what he put out in the past several years but I feel the same way about RMS that I did when Saturday Night Live went downhill, I was expecting some little 'gem' to strike me as funny throughout the show so I continued to watch it....but was sadly disappointed when all was said and done when there were no little 'gems' after all.

I believe that he turns the mics off to add to the allure of purchasing the 'uncut' version of his shows at some later date. Is this good marketing or just an annoyance to loyal listeners who feel they've put in their time over the years and deserve to be treated better? I tend to think it's just an annoyance.
