Is Russ...

Personally I like the new incarnation of the Russ Martin Show... It is always entertaining and to me the new show is like RMS meets TMZ. ;D

I hate the tmz...couldn't you use another analogy so I don't feel like an out of work 20-something chick. When I'm watching fox 4 news and at the the tmz logo pops up, i cringe and lunge for the remote.

Take it back, Jeff. Make it sound more man-ish...

Oops... my bad. How about the RMS meets Maxim Magazine meets the National Enquirer meets Men of a Certain Age.

I was a big fan from the first RMS broadcast on 105.3. The show lost a lot of steam IMHO when Eddie Boyd left the show. I was hoping that the extended "vacation" would bring about a reinvigoration. Turns out I was wrong, and frankly the show is terrible. It's like the Trey Trenholm Show, with Guest Host Russ Martin. It's not funny; it doesn't even seem to try. Oh well. I enjoyed it while I enjoyed it.

I was a big fan of the show too, loved it, every minute of it... But since his "incident" it's just not funny anymore. Every time he jokes about violence against someone, that "incident" just sort of hangs there, like ummmm.... yeah.... uncomfortable. Regardless of what he did or didn't do, the whole thing sort of just coats the show with a feeling of "ick." It didn't help that he was up Mel Gibson's butt his first week back either.

Agree.

Loved the old 105.3 days. Don't know if it was due to time of day (his old show seemed perfect for late afternoon/early evening) or what. I too miss JD. He seemed a very good compliment to Russ, very distinctive voice and recognizable local celeb, as his "straight-man." That "RMS" has more character.

I've tried to listen a few times but it's just not the same. Tough to catch lightning in a bottle twice. The Musers are always more interesting and/or funny to me now.

Can I take back what I said previously about liking this incarnation better? While they were gone for two weeks over the holidays and I got the chance to listen to the recycled bits over and over I just got sick of it. You guys have convinced me that it is not as funny as it was on 105.3. I tried to listen this morning but when i tuned in Russ was bitching about how inefficient his personal assistant is. ::) Flipped back between the Musers and Jody Dean and the Morning Team after that. I really don't see The Eagle flying much longer but I have been wrong before... ;D

I am one of those people that thinks when Russ was at his best he was the best radio show I've ever heard.  It was absolutely hilarious.  But I do not care for his new show.  I think there have been roughly 3 eras of Russ

2002 Russ - His show was highly energetic.  When I think of the best stuff from these days it was Russ getting twisted off about something.  He was like a great insult comic
2005 Russ - At this point he had slowed down and matured a bit.  The show really hit its stride around this time.  It became more of a situational comedy where the listener had feeelings about the show's characters and enjoyed the comedy of their putting themselves in funny situations.  Some people complain "it was staged!" but TV's "The Office" is all staged, that doesn't make it any less funny.  What made it authentic was the blend of real issues with staged ones so the audience really couldn't disceren between the two.
2007-2010 Russ - Russ' show started dropping off in quality as well as ratings when it began to focus way too much on current events.  Unfortunately, that trend only accellerated when he got back on the air.  Gone are the funny bits and instead every segment is Russ giving his tired and predictable opinion on current events or overplaying some youtube clip.  Now his show is more modeled on Rush Limbaugh than Howard Stern.

As a side note, when you listen to his stuff from 2002-2006 you hear a very passionate man, now the passion seems to be gone from his work.  I think the two problems for his show is that it's moved so far away from what made it unique in all of radio and that whereas Russ used to be exciting and passionate, now he's predictable.

I hate to say it, but I think Gordon Keith on the Musers show now does a much better Russ than Russ Martin does.

I think he has been found out to be a fraud. All his blowing up bits and terrorizing Gavin has been exposed. It was very funny at the time for the dumb listener like me, but now what is real? I could care less about what he thinks of the latest news story, so very boring and so much over laughter from his cronies when they think he is making a funny point. Would love to see how he stacks up against the rest of the morning shows.

Dan is actually funnier now, I can't believe I'm actually saying that, but he's gone from a completely unlistenable radio personality (In the Dan and Tasos days), to someone who's actually somewhat decent now.

Ratings say Russ is still relevant. Whether you like him or despise him. On the other hand Bo and Jim are irrelevant. Bo was a DJ at my wife's Junior Prom in 1983. Envy is one of the seven deadly sins.

@ MrDeath, I think you nailed it sir. I listened to the old shows off of the .info sight while the RMS was off the air and loved it. that original cast was money and Russ was a different person than he is now. IMO 02-05 were the best days of the show even though I enjoyed the 05, 06 stuff. It seems apparent to me that somewhere around 07 is when JD checked out and I believe thats when the show started to decline the most. Also Eddie Boyd left the years prior and we got introduced to Trey, which for some reason i could handle easier prior to the current incarnation of the show. All of these things contribute the the RMS decline. The show as it is currently constructed is unfortunately not stop down listening for me any more. When you combine the fact that the content just isnt what it used to be, its in the morning, and its on a station that wasn't even on my presets prior to July 2010...the RMS is relegated to FM2 on my radio in the car. I do still listen to the .info playbacks when I work out and work around the house, but I'll admit its mostly background noise, they'll hit a streak when its really entertaining for a few minutes, but sadly it seems the times when one could listen intently for the full 4 hrs and through 20 min commercial breaks have come to an end.

@evening times, how is this man a fraud? he's been on the radio for 30 years and in his current format for more than a decade on major radio. he's not a fraud, but he is declining...

I think he's talking about his bits, his persona of standing up to "The Man" (Gavin), etc. When you really thought he was setting fire to the boss's desk (or whatever), terrorizing the GM, etc it's a lot funnier than knowing it's all a set-up bit. that's where I think he's been exposed as "a fraud".

With the Ticket's birthday talk last week, they mentioned some of their old prank calls. And, for example, when the fake Dan Bennett called the real Dale Hansen to see if Dale and Norm Hitzges could room together in Austin, it was a very funny bit.

But it was really Dale. Not Dale in on "the gag", but really Dale not about to share a room with Norm.
With Russ, you no longer know if that's really Gavin (or his replacement) or someone playing that role, for the sake of the bit...

Where is Gavin Spittle these days btw? Did he die off like the pigvomit character from Private Parts?
