Is Television truly becoming a "Wasteland"?

I've been reading your post on "TV Land" and yes, they have strayed away from
what the channel was intended for.
Which brings me to my question, "Is Television truly becoming a Wasteland?"
Back in the 1960's, whoever said this was the case knew something before
it's time with the advent of cable and satellite services.
Most of the channels are repitious, which is why i think we should have the
choice of what we want to watch, not what cable and satellite wants you to
view.

For the most part YES, and it's getting worse by the month.

The only good news is that there are some intelligent options available to those of us who have more of an intellectual taste. Cable channels such as Discovery, History, Science, etc. are coming out with some darn good programming (though they are not immune from the junk either). PBS also resists the race to the bottom, though they are not for every taste.

All that being said, general interest channels and programming have been in the crapper for years and the situation has never been worse. The absolute infatuation with celebrity sluts, "reality" shows (stuff like Flavor of Love, My Fair Brady, the Batchelor III or XI or MCM or whatever # they are up to, the Kardashians, the Hills, etc.), and the lowest in lowest common denominator programming (e.g. Moment of Truth) has me fearful for our kids. It's a very bad trend.

Basic TV has long been the intellectual equivalent of cotton candy. But, it's grown so bad that THIS cotton candy is laced with arsenic. At least for those who are too young or impressionable to know that what they see does not represent "normal" behavior. Wasteland? Oh yeah.

sometimes I do wonder, what happened to Television. It's not what it used to be anymore. It's all fed by the media, the war in Iraq, Britney all over "showbiz" shows, and stupid "reality" shows that, seriously, I have wondered, who really watches them?
