If you hear white noise (actually it's data) on either side instead of the usual splatter, then yep.

I'm not in a good reception area for WDIA. Curious what the main channel audio sounds like. Not sure why they would sacrifice the audio on one of the last few remaining music AM's which does quite well...

"kc" ? Are you older than me, even??? :)

WDIA doesn't sound much different than it did before. There is a little less in the high end, but I think it's been like that for a while. Can't tell any difference with WREC.

IBOC has hit Memphis....*sigh*

I agree. WDIA I think limited the bandwidth months ago in preparation for this...

WREC may have been limited too, but with talk you wouldn't be able to tell.

*pound*

(another nail in the coffin)

i'm 32 but well familiar with use of kc
which brings to mind yesterday i was telling someone about following around Doc Graves (engineer at WROX-am till the time when he passed on) He lost is eyesight and still somehow kept things going with a little help.

he was one of those engineers who could do anything or make anything work.

how many 10 or 11 year olds in these time will get to shadow someone like that?

Doc never seemed to be bothered by me and always took time to explain things.

It's no wonder i'm a geek now!

WREC has been broadcasting in IBOC for some months now. Damned annoying but thankfully it does clear up after dark when they have to shut it off.<P ID="signature">______________

I was checking this out on my Icom 756 II (a really cool radio as our Moderator and Radiosaur will attest); I can see it plainly on the bandscope -- two very obvious peaks on either side of the main carrier and sidebands. ON WREC, they seem to center on ~ 587 kc and 612 kc (yes, 'Saur, I'm getting old, too).

Now, is there ANYONE out there that can make use of these transmissions, or is it more like a tree falling in the forest that no one can hear?

DE

Yep, gonna run right out and get a new HD radio receiver...right after I shell out 3K for an HD TV...NOT.

Are you saying IBOC is the abject failure many people said it would be?

Making payments on the hdtv still... so the radio will wait...
because then the tv required updated sound system for 5.1 surround
but that got me xmradio in the house.... so as a result of buying the tv on sale and saving money i have now upgraded my receiver for video in the living room... added xm account... bought xm for the car and added another account...
and i still need those klipsch speakers..lol

ill wait till there is something broadcast digitally that i really want... fat chance huh?

Two thoughts on that...

I got hdtv on a hauppauge pc card. They run about a hundred bucks, although someone was kind enough to give me one. It really is quite unbelievable to think thats an over-the-air signal - it's that good! Check out WMC-DT 5-2 for example... 3 different channels embedded on one, a music video channel, NBC Weather plus and the main channel 5 feed. If only there were a similar animal for hd radio. I do have an fm card as part of a different tv card in my computer which is cool but it ain't hd. That's the cheap way to go.

Your comment about ain't nothing to listen to... at present yeah you're right, but in some markets some stations are adding a couple of alternate channels, kinda like starting up different radio stations as part of their hd feed. If HD ever takes off, which I doubt will, it might be kinda neat.

XM & Sirius are nice but you'll notice that the audio quality ain't as good as CDs or even FM when you consider how low the streaming rate is. It sounds like about a 64k encoded real-audio file playing. That's my only complaint. Or maybe its just me, my ear picks up things like that.

HD radio is like AM Stereo was. There are signals, but no receivers for people to hear it. When will they ever learn?
