Is the 96.7 W244AS translator off the air?

I used to hear the distorted mono signal of the former WQXR translator all the time in central NJ, but I just realized I haven't heard a peep from them in the past several months. So is W244AS off the air for good? Now all I ever hear on 96.7 is DX from "The Coast" WCTZ from Connecticut.

96.7 was on the air as of last week when I tuned in. This summer when WQXR moved from 96.3 to 105.9
and the translator had to be changed to receive 105.9 stead of 96.3 (took about a week before they changed it) I noticed That 96.7 was now back in stereo (as it was several years ago) and did not sound over modulated. There is some slight hiss as 105.9 Does not come in as strong in Wanamassa Where the translator is as 96.3 did. The switch to stereo probably cut down how far the signal gets out vs when they were broadcasting in Mono. According to radio locator the ERP is only 8 watts at 244 feet. Here is a link to the coverage map on Radio Locator. I live not far from the public works tower on sunset ave and it looks like there is a two bay antenna at the top.

I live in Essex county and there is a very strong pirate on 96.7 that came on the air this past summer. Prior to that I used to get a good signal from WCTZ from CT.

Maybe the owner found a sucker. He is trying to sell it for 500K !

When WCTZ moves to Southern Westchester in the near future (the FCC approved their new CP) you will should be able to pull in WCTZ quite clearly in Essex County.....Hopefully the move will bump that 96.7 pirate either off the air or to another frequency.

Are you referring to WCTZ's move to Yonkers? When does the changeover actually take place? I have been hearing about that move for 3 years now and I read somewhere a few months ago that the move was scrapped because WCTZ couldn't get the tower spot that they wanted.

Similarly I read that WFAS is moving soon to the Bronx (I believe the same tower as WFUV), and that they have been doing testing on that new transmitter. I wonder when that changeover will officially take place. (There is also a very strong pirate on 103.9 in the Newark area)

Yes WCTZ lost their transmitter site in Yonkers but they were able to find a new home a few miles east atop Trump Plaza in New Rochelle.....The CP was granted October 15......No word when the move will take place.

WFAS-FM is going to be moving to the Bronx (on the same tower as WFUV & WVIP-FM) in the near future.....Scott Fybush of NERW reported that they have done some signal testing at the site already but not sure when they move will actually take place......Since late summer, WFAS-FM has been promoting 106.3 very heavy so that can be a sign that the move will happen soon......What will happen after 103.9 moves (format or ownership change) remains a mystery......One side note regarding WFAS-FM's new transmitter site.....When WVIP-FM moved there a few months back, it went from a clear signal to having much more static throughout Bergen County….Currently 103.9 has a great signal throughout Bergen County at their current site but, I have a feeling the move is going to hurt their signal in Bergen County as well.

Cumulus should just license the Bronx site as an aux., and leave things the way they are until they find a buyer for 103.9.

Well that was quick.....96.7 WCTZ was sold to EMF and will go CCM as K-Love when the sale is final and they move to their new site.....I guess NE New Jersey will have 2 CCM's with 96.7 & 99.1.

what are the chances for W244AS to be rescinded with this move? If no effect should happen based on this move, then don't be surprised that jams radio pirate will be heard in this area.

All it would take is a one watt transmitter tuned to the input frequency (105.9) in the Staples parking lot and you would be croadcadting from this translator. Unless they are using RDS, it's really pretty simple.
