Is the 98 at 9 Back?

B98.5's 98 at 9 seems to be back, except it's now called The Workday Kickoff.

Caller 10, what's the deal?

OMG Roddy it's more than that! Starting this morning B98.5 FM launched a tribute flash-back to the 98 at 9! In the last hour they've featured some great moments, like June 11, 2008 when Jordan Graye announced "We're inside that 98 at 9." And March 2010 when Kelly McCoy said "Weekday mornings we give ya over ninety-eight minutes of commercial-free soft rock around 9 o'clock. It's the 98 at 9, and is most definitely the longest commercial-free music sweep to start your workday. Listen to B98.5 FM." I never thought I'd hear these great moments on the radio again!

I'm not sure if I'm just paying more attention, but B98.5 seems to have taken the "fresh" AC strategy way too far. Now they're playing Jessie J's "Domino" and intentionally scheduling stretches as long as four or five songs that sound suspiciously Star 94-esque. Last hour (3PM on Tuesday), they played a whopping two 80s songs...rest was, as they say, 90s and now.

I don't know who they're trying to kid, but it needs to stop. It doesn't appear that B learned any lessons from Star 94 when they tried mimicking Q100 three or four years ago. Star does Hot AC better. Let them stick to that and carve out your own niche.

I've listened quite a bit and have not heard 4 or 5 currents in a row. When I've listened, it's been more like 2 or 3 an hour.

Yes, Jessie J does sound a little adventurous for them, but other AC's are playing it.

It doesn't matter about what other AC stations play, that is the problem that B98.5 has a problem with. They tried to be like every other AC station, and look where it got them. During the 4 o' clock, they played 5 currents (Jessie J, Lady A, P!nk, Katy Perry, Adele), 2 recurrents (3 Doors Down, Colbie Calliet, Red Hot Chili) and 5 gold or 80s and 90s (TLC, Corey Hart, Seal, KT Tunstall, Modern English).

I guess I should clarify. Maybe they aren't playing 3 or 4 straight currents in a row, but they are regularly playing 3 or 4 songs in a row (not to be confused with Q100's 10 songs in a row) that are, sonically speaking, Star 94 songs...be them currents, recurrents or golds.

Nothing wrong with "Domino" - it's going to be an AC hit, is on the chart and they certainly aren't the only AC station playing it - if it fits their playlist, which it does, I don't see an issue with it.

Speaking of being like Star 94, B98.5 has started a commercial-free hour at 4:45PM. Doesn't Star start its commercial-free hour right after the 4:45 stop set?

OMG Roddy I thought you were pulling my leg with an April fool's joke, but they are really playing over 98 minutes of music! I love Star 98.5, it's my music and my workday!

You bet, on Star, everything is YOURS! On B it is THEIRS!

Kicking off the workday! It's ninety-eight minutes of non-stop music! You could also say it's the most back-to-back B! Wow!

I was just listening to Vikki & Kelly in the morning, they had a contest and a listener won! Then in just a few minutes we all win, with the Workday Kickoff! Over 98 minutes of non-stop music ONLY on B98.5 FM!

On a different note, B98.5 didn't have ANY kind of a retro (80s, 90s, or both) weekend this weekend. Regular playlist the whole weekend. When's the last time that happened?
