Is The Beat-SA intimidated by a little HD station? Really?

"KROV" is making a bigger deal of this than it really was. I'll bet KBBT was not told other stations would be there when they agreed to pay to bring an artist to perform at the school's event. Someone put them in a tough spot. Having other media there would dilute the return on their investment. This happens all the time when competitors show up at a station's high-dollar promotion. If the school had made its plans clear to KBBT and all involved, this matter could have been handled ahead of time over the phone.

Fred's probably right. I've literally seen fistfights break out between stations' employees when one station's staff member shows up at another's promotion. In most cases, both were invited and the plan wasn't made clear to either.

First of all, all kinds of props to KROV as they have managed to turn a little-known HD2 frequency into a community voice. It's what multicast radio should have been all along, but due to politics, corporate influence and incompetent design, rarely is.

That being said, if the giant Univision did have an exclusive contract at this event, then they should not have been invited. They can show up to cover it as a news event, yes. But a live remote, no way. Sorry...if you're going to present yourself as a professional radio station, you need to act like one.

I can NOT believe I'm defending Univision! ::)

Personally, I could care less about weather or not Univision had an exclusive contract at the event. This is wrong in all ways. KROV did great in raising their voice on the right to be there, especially on MLK day.

It seems the question is whether KROV was 'reporting' on the event or trying to do a remote, assuming Univision was supposed to be exclusive. I've been on the receiving end of live remote crashing. I worked one market where the competitor would come over and offer a free live remote and taunt us with their sound system, loud foul language etc. as soon as we went live. The bad part is sales can't take full responsibility for the results and both stations are losers to the client if the staff lets all this get to them. Then again, we added a clause to our remote contracts saying we would be the exclusive radio station during the time frame and that solved the issue.

It's never been made clear by either party that Univision had exclusive rights to conducting remote broadcasts. And if they did, it seems to me the event organizers were at fault for not communicating that to KROV. However, I still find having exclusive rights to an MLK event to be in direct contrast of MLK's message and legacy.

I agree that this is the key. News coverage does not equal live remote. The "little HD station" needs to cultivate its own live remote opportunities, not horn in on some other station's remote event.

As anthonydt06 pointed out, exclusion would not be the spirit of a MLK Day event and I agree. I suppose the missing pieces of the puzzle involve learning how much responsibility Univision took on in planning the event. If the event was essentially planned or provided by Univision (ie: they lined up the entertainment, coordinated things and such) then an exclusive would not be out of line. In such a case it might have been promoted as a station event. There are many possibilities as per the Univision involvement. Some event organizers set everything up and look for a station for exclusive promotion of the event (ie: exclusive as far as the station goes). Some event organizers look to a station to gain an 'exclusive' to provide entertainment to bring people out, etc. All of these details are unknown to me. At any rate, it is too bad these events ended up taking the focus off the message of Dr. King.

I recall-- as acting GM of an Austin station-- being approached by a local group looking for a radio sponsor for their event. They told me that in exchange for X number of promos we would have our logo on all the posters and print advertising. So imagine my surprise when I saw the first ad and there were FIVE station logos on it. This was back before market clusters. When I complained about the ad, I was told that they never said EXCLUSIVE radio sponsor. My response was that I never said how long the promos would be and when they would run.

fredcantu: good answer. I've been in those shoes! Some decisionmakers just don't understand a lack of cooperation and deception quickly marks them off the list. I bet the other 4 stations were just as happy as you.

This is all too funny.

Clearly KROV needed to clarify THEIR contract or presence at the event. I think the BEAT & UNIVISION have been nice until now but i see them applying more strigent conditions on advertisers and promoters to lock KROV out of the event.

Yes the little guy loses again but what did you expect when you decided to make a big deal of it. Instead of making a scene, you should have set up a live remote somewhere else and continued to use street promotions to engage the massive Beat listenership and win over a few more listeners. Instead they were focused on burning bridges and trying to pretend to be the large "station" they are not.....

Its very obvious that this station is ran by radio and marketing amatuers... not someone who is versed in street promotion, marketing, and public relations. You were not invited as true media sponsor for the event so KROV posed as a "news" station. Too funny...i didnt see you at city hall last week or at the latest murder in San antonio...

i wonder if they will show this much enthuisiasm on Cesar Chavez Day or Cinco de Mayo?

KROV should have been able to go there are record all the audio they wanted for later playback.

But once they flipped that live switch.......a line was crossed.

It's also quite obvious a Univision troll comes along, creates an account for RI and dumps on a public station.

Not a employee of Univision but I know reality when i see it. My opinion is the KROV is dead wrong in this situation. Sometimes SDH483 the truth hurts! I also witnessed a similar situation with local concert that was promoted by KBBT and KROV.

I personally think the Management, staff, and jocks at KROV are non existent in the publics view. I think the management and staff are doing a horrible job at managing and marketing their station....just an opinion.

"Its hard to cross back over burnt bridges......"
