Is The Clock Ticking For David Lee Roth??

After receiving terrible reviews, ratings for his affiliates being way below what had been expected (and way, way below what Howard Stern was doing on those stations), being put on "hiatus" for a week (to supposedely give the show's production team time to improve the program), and reports that friction has erupted between him and his bosses (including some of it on the air), is David Lee Roth's syndicated (to some former Howard Stern affiliates on the East Coast) morning radio show about to get axed??

CBS Radio may need to do something and fast: The Spring Arbitron book, the year's most important, starts on March 30th. If CBS decides to pull the plug on Roth, they'd want to do it prior to the start of the book.

Rover and/or Adam Carolla could end-up getting a few new affiliates on the East Coast within the next couple of weeks, for if Roth gets the axe, either one of them will likely inherit Roth's station roster, or both of them will split Roth's affiliate lineup between them.

Unless CBS wants a one-day delay on the East Coast, not likely. Those shows are done live.

CBS could also relocate either Adam Carolla or Rover to the East Coast so their shows would air live in the East, and on a few hours' delay on the West Coast.

None of the above. A much bigger deal MAY be in the works.

Rover is on in the Eastern Time Zone (on WZNE/Rochester, NY). He starts his show at WCKG in Chicago at 5:00AM, so east coast stations can take it live at 6:00AM.

It has been said that Carolla does not want to leave L.A.; so a relocation of that show is unlikely. Carolla could always be used on the East Coast for middays (kind of the opposite of how Stern's live feed was run overnight on KLSX), but I find that quite unlikely.

Rumor is that Roth will be out and Opie and Anthony may be in. Yes I know they already work at XM. Doesn't matter. The Suits are trying to figure out a way to make it work.

Or as GWB would say: "There's an old saying in Tennessee - I know it's in Texas, it's probably in Tennessee - that says, fool me once, shame on ... shame on you. It fool me. We can't get fooled again."

Uh, I believe that the highlighted part of the quote should read "Won't Get Fooled Again. Like the Bloody Who said, man."

It's one of the few things GW remember from "those days".

Didn't Carolla & Rover do just as bad if not worse ratings wise as DLR?Didn't Rover come in 37th in Chicago?

You're all fools for making these foolish analogies

Uh, O&A equal the last hope for Free FM. O&A on New York FM radio again would drive the young males they need back to 92.3.

Opie and Anthony in NYC

Before the Cathedral case Opie and Anthony had numbers that often beat the traditional Talk stations in their daypart. To me, they're a proven quantity in New York. They were the best talent WNEW-FM had.

If the Roth dispute isn't a stunt and he does get canned, I think Opie and Anthony can come very close to the old Stern numbers. In New York, complaining about management is a grand tradition. O&A did it often on WNEW.

There are two other issues: their satellite contract and whether or not CBS will be willing to risk future fines. They've paid to wipe out all old infractions, except the Janet Jackson thing. They're fair game for the FCC.

Supposedly, the head of the New York Catholic League - which spearheaded the drive against O&A back in the "SITC" days - has forgiven them, and even appeared as a friendly guest on their XM show!

Re: Opie and Anthony in NYC

The latest (as of Sunday evening, March 12th) Opie and Anthony rumors suggest that the stations that have been broadcasting David Lee Roth would be simulcasting a somewhat "sanitized" Opie and Anthony show (with objectionable material being bleeped-out of the show).

Won't that take away from much of what made O&A popular? How do you take away all of the four letter words from their shtick and still draw crowds?

O&A confirmed the other day that they are discussing this with CBS, but said they will not go through with it unless it is done their way, and they will NOT let it interfere with the XM show.<P ID="signature">______________

Opie and Anthony did very well in New York on WNEW-FM without the four letter words. With the inability to determine for sure what the satellite audience is (spread over 300 or so channels), I'd bet they had a far larger audience on WNEW-FM.

It's the entertainment value of Opie and Anthony that draws crowds, not four letter words.

A recent announcement from the top CBS honcho says Opie and Anthony will never return to CBS.

Of course, that probably means the contracts are being drawn up as we type.

Thanks Rich. The few times that I heard them on satellite, there were quite a few words being used that would never pass on conventional radio. I agree that they are really off the wall, and really entertaining.
