Is The Eagle About To Be Rammed By A Bull?

Where is the PPM market where classic country actually works?

Where is the diary market where classic country actually works? :)

I remember a study from Arbitron about ten years ago saying that the typical classic country station gathered a formidable 1.6 share. This was, of course, before the PPM. Many classic country stations are on daytimer AMs or otherwise poor signals, at least partially explaining that. But I don't remember seeing a classic country above a 3 share 12+ in any of the top 100 markets...

I guess the next real question is what's classic country these days? Are we talking really old crap, or are we talking 70-80s pretty much pre-Garth? If we are talking 70-80s pre-Garth, I think the format could muster a useful audience in many markets. I don't think it's going to set the world on fire, but in many cases it could work great for a rim-shot or something where expectations aren't into the stratosphere as many owners expect for their sticks. Do I like country in general? HELL NO. Do I think it will work in some cases? Yup. Do I think DFW needs another mainstream country? HELL NO.

Classic country in 2011 looks like this:

Alan Jackson - Midnight in Montgomery (1992)
Conway Twitty - Happy Birthday Darlin' (1979)
Brad Paisley - Alcohol (2007)
Martina McBride - Independence Day (1992)
Tim McGraw - Live Like You Were Dying (2006)
Dwight Yoakum (w. Buck Owens) - Streets of Bakersfield (1988)
Alabama - Roll On (1984)
Sugarland - Baby Girl (2006)
Garth Brooks (w. George Jones) - Beer Run (2001)
George Strait - Heartland (1992)
Lady Antebellum - Need You Now (2009)
Ronnie Milsap - Houston Solution (1989)

Well KEGL's facebook says they are not chaging formats. Why would they register the domain and redirect it to thier site?

Hmmmmm

Not going to happen. Mind games. Brilliant too. Cumulus is a bigger threat to CC than to CBS in Dallas but on the surface would appear that CBS would have more to gain by flipping a stick Country.

CC probably just sending a message - Don't F with KISS FM or we will F with KPLX. (my guess that CC thinking i93 would move to the 96.3 freq to give full market strength signal and put an actual dent in KISS ratings. Cumulus guessing they could move KSCS staff to 93.3 and still have the Country audience owned.)

KXY in OKC had 3.1 in Spring book and 4.1 in Winter.

I saw something interesting when I looked at August's Ratings for DFW. Not sure if anyone noticed this already, but KEGL is listed as a country station in this book. Could this be a mistake? In my opinion I highly doubt this is a coincidence or mistake, plus the website 971thebull.com redirecting. All signs are pointing to a flip really soon. Check it out for yourself http://www.radio-info.com/markets/dallas-ft-worth

OK, it's not a top 100 market, but "The Ranch," KKUS, does pretty well in Tyler-Longview. It did a 5.6 in 12+ which puts them as the #4 station. Not bad for a station that has a "challenged" signal in Longview.

For those who are geographically challenged, that's only 120 miles from DFW.

KMJX 105.1 The Wolf - Little Rock, AR has a 6.9 in the Spring 2011 book.

I don't know what it is, but the programming department for the Dallas CC cluster has been VERY weak for AT LEAST a decade. It's truly amazing that in 2011, there are a group of people that can EFF up a ROCK STATION with HERITAGE CALL LETTERS with HERITAGE talent like Skull and Martin. It truly TRULY baffles me. PPM killed them. Rock stations, particularly those with heritage like The Eagle need to BREATHE. No, they tied everyone's hands and made the MARKET VETERAN, Russ Martin play RECORDS in the morning. They started ignoring all the rules of the past just because of PPM, and now it's killed them. They have a what - 2 share right now? What do you think another COUNTRY station is going to do in Dallas? Another 2 share? Yes, but the idea with Dallas CC programming is to keep changing that fu**ing thing so that they look like they're TRYING something to keep their butts out of a sling with higher corporate people. Here's another question, how could you NOT SELL A HERITAGE ROCK STATION WITH HERITAGE CALL LETTERS AND HERITAGE TALENT? They should fire every single AE in the building and start from scratch. This is a BOTCHED operation, and btw, one of the worst program directors in the history of program directors, Chris "I just mope around saying yessir" Ryan should share in some of the blame, because that guy wouldn't go to bat for a GNAT, much less a veteran personality like Russ or Skull.

Way to go CC DALLAS. We all expected this, so thanks for not letting us down in that regard. Bunch of panty wastes.
