IS THE MUSIC & RADIO INDUSTRY FINALLY GETTING THE MESSAGE

Lately I've been noticing the sound of top 40 and within that sound, and I 've been getting hooked lately on the latest tunes in a format that has been bleak and went from bad to worse, especially the first 5-6 years of the new millenium. But the current tunes and even certain artists I never thought I give the time of day to...has me listening. These songs have been becoming more melodic, catchy , better rockers, and out of all circumstances....there's been some good hip- hop I like. Let's take a look and see why....
Kings of Leon....one of the best rockers I've haven't heard in along time.
Black Eyed Peas....A group I despised, But "I've Got A Feeling"...this is first one for them, that I like. Decent hooks and you can sing it. Not om Goom Pow whatever nonsense that they usually record.
Miley Cirus...I'm alittle too old to like something from a teenager...but I hate to admit it...it's good.
Florida/NeYo....These type of singers and sound I wished never existed. Finally these guys can actually sing a catchy hook in their own style, and I got caught singing accidentally out in the crowd while listening with my headset on out loud I Wanna Be on You, and it's in my mind all day.
Michael Franti good upbeat positive sound, the best so far from Lady Ga-Ga "Paparazi" and slow developing but hear more often you get to like it sound from City Owl. Uncle Kracker...his best so far. You can actually sing with them. Not this over thug, rap, electronic tropical grunge crap we been hearing forcefully down our throat for the last 10 or more years. The format is getting fresh, as long as they won't play these songs for the next 14 months from now,top 40 can make a strong comeback. As long as the music tracks from new and veteran artist can continue to be catchy, haunting, melodic chorus hooks in them, people will listen and spend money for them. And Top 40 willl make a strong comeback like the Hot Hit days. Any thoughts...

I'm an Obama fan, but what does his presidency have to do with CHR sounding better (or worse, depending on how you look at the format)?

I happen to find it rather interesting that CHR radio goes down the toilet each time someone named Bush takes office.

It happened with the elder Bush too, as that exacerbated the ballad hell and New Kids On The Block ruining CHR radio.

I used to be an Obama fan, but not anymore. I wont go into detail, but bush, although he sucked, he at least did something to fight terrorism, and kept Isreal safe.... Quite frankly I am scared of Obama, listen to rush or Hannity sometime as they expose his lies.

I dont mean to offend anyone, you can delete it if you must.

On the other end, chr radio is ten times better than even two years ago, so is rhythmic chr.

Once again,,,, Obama fans and everyone should be able to say their opinion if it is kept civil, just remember that this is the chr radio board,,, and Ill do the same.

You know I'm all about Israel being safe but at the same time I'm still a big O'bama supporter.
I used to listen on occasion to Sean Hannity's radio show. The guy's knowledgeable but what he's real good at is spinning the story in a way that pleases the conservative right. He makes sure to only take up calls from left-wing supporters if they sound vulnerable, or he just takes them off the air if they actually make a lot of sense.
There's a big backlash right now against conservatives, especially b/c of Glenn Beck. Glenn Beck used to be on CNN and used to despise the healthcare system. Now he's on Dox News and he's suddenly its biggest fan. What a hypocrite! Oh, and he also called our president a racist, LOL, what an idiot.
Ironically enough, Glenn Beck used to be a CHR personality - he worked at KRBE Houston and Y-95 Phoenix in the 80s.

I think Obama becoming president has left young people pretty optimistic, and it's also fueled the wholse crossover sound the black community is embracing. Black Eyed Peas, Sean Kingston, Timbaland, and others are seen first anf foremost as Pop rather than R&B or Hip Hop these days. A growing number of young blacks are also discovering that they like some Rock music.
I think all these recent trends are very healthy for the CHR/Pop format.

We have Billy Bush on CHR radio now. Isn't Billy related to George W. some how?

Billy Bush has been doing CHR radio for at least a decade. I remember early in the Y2K he was doing mornings at the now defunct Z-104 Washington DC.
I believe he's the nephew of George W.

How did this thread become a presidential debate? What has this got to do with improved hit music? This country is even in worst shape then i thought. Obama and Bush as program directors?

How about we talk economics instead of politics. There used to be a cycle where CHR did best when the economy was booming (mid-late 80s, mid-late 90s) and go into the doldrums when the economy is in recession (early 80s, early 90s). CHRs would often sound too Hot AC during bad economic times. In fact in the early 90s some CHRs just went ahead and flipped Hot AC.

Today the economy is the worst since the Great Depression (don't let the green shoots talk fool you it's still bad) yet CHR is very hot right now.

So it would appear the doldrums theory is no longer valid.. Any idea why? Here's my guess. Looking back in retrospect we can say it wasn't so much the poor economy that made CHR plunge in the ratings, it was simply that the format became too adult for it's own good during those periods. Today CHRs are not making the old mistakes. Most CHRs sound young and fun and yes the music out right now is unusually good. With this combination CHR is recession proof at least when it comes to ratings. Sales are petty much down everywhere.

The economy was terrible in the late '90s though (at least in Cincinnati).

One thing that's pretty much been gone from CHR for a while is the ballad hell that used to occasionally afflict it. Around 1981 and again around 1989 there was some ballad hells. I think it happened again around 1998, but by that time, CHR was fragmented beyond hope.

No ballads anymore? What will the kids slow dance too now? I usually dispise rock ballads because the term "rock ballad" seems oxymoronic, but I do enjoy a nice rhythmic ballad. It's ok to throw in a minimum number of ballads in the rotation IMO. I also agree too many ballads will render your station into "soft AC" territory
