WAYA-FM True Oldies 106.7 just defeated the River 97.1 overall in the latest book. Looks like the VERY tight 97 song playlist isn`t working any more on the River. By the way, how can this staion still be "New" after 3 1/2 years of existance? The imaging is horrible and the station sounds dead like a tomb. Would Cox bring back Fox 97 to fight Randy and Spiff and WYAY-True Oldies 106.7? The Fox 97 name was very famous in Atlanta. If they did it, they would need to bring a large playlist of oldies......

I don't know why they would bring Fox 97 back. It dwindled down to nothing before it died. I believe the River is about right where they want it - in the top 10 overall in their demo. I honestly believe Cox would rather not spend the money to local it up any more than it already is, and for what it is, it's pretty adequate if you ask me.

NO!

If I recall correctly when Cox bought Fox 97 they had just had a very successful book. Even Monica of Channel 2’s six o’clock news visited R&S. I believe the PD that was given credit (or blame) for the book quit or (was asked to quit). Then it seemed that the Good Times and EIGHT Oldies very tight play list was adopted. Cox could bring back the WFOX call letters from their Norwalk Connecticut station. Would it be worth it? Not to the managers at Cox. Going back to oldies would be admitting they screwed up Fox 97.
97.1 is very fixable. I believe they are going to a smaller play list even as I listen. I can stand only so much Queen.
My list of fixes:
They need a morning show. Not an all talk, but may be 3 or 4 humorous bits an hour with a brief traffic fix. I think it they went live at least until midnight letting a real human say the positioning slogan instead of the same guy saying 52 minutes of commercial free. TELL THE TRUTH, THE RIVER IS NOT NEW ANYMORE. The River should try to interact a little more with their listeners or at least develop some kind of personalities instead of trying to compete with a MP3 players.
And the most Important! Cox can send me my consulting fee just contact me via this board.

I've gotta say this is one of the worst sounding stations I've ever heard. Those same songs over and over and over....then those drab liners with that vanilla, boring voice reading the liners. But hey, it's Cox...how many Cox music stations actually sound logical? :D

GT&GO...just stop it. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it'll never be 1992 again. Fox 97 is gone.

Do I think the River could use some...er, improvements? Yes. Bringing back Fox isn't on that list.

As much as I was a champion of the Oldies format myself, Cox bringing back Fox would be a real bone-headed move, in fact it would be ludicrous. You'll have to settle for 106.7 for your Oldies, such as it is.

Atlanta barely has room for one oldies station, let alone two.

That's not to say that River couldn't tweak its playlist to include more 80s harder AOR hits, but that would change the character of the station in a way that might break it. Eventually it will probably do that, but not now and not until the 70s stuff gets too old for its target audience.

Morning show: Give Kaedy more mike time. That's all you have to do. She can do interesting monologues.

No offense jabba17, but this station has been BROKEN for a long time. :)

River is one of those stations that sounds good at first, then gets tiring very quickly.

As usual Clark, you are dead wrong. I think BGT&GO is correct on this. He said that True Oldies was coming back and that R&S would be on the station. His track record is without question. If he thinks that he can go back to 1992 than I believe him 100%. In fact, I will help in build the WAYBAC Machine. I would love to go back to 1992. I would give the president some Pepcid prior to his eating in Japan, take the Bills plus 14, help Amy Fischer with her homework so Joey Buttafucco doesn't, double check all space heaters at Windsor Castle, listen to all of Clark Howard's advice and convince Kate McCarthy to not listen to radio, thus making sure the Kate vs. Jordan battle never occurs.

It took awhile but you got there but I am a Kate fan so it would be Jordan who I would try to sway.

I agree--they do need to expand their playlist, or at least freshen it more often. I wonder if that's why River's ratings are slipping (although I haven't seen ALL the numbers).

If they kept Kaedy around until 10, did the commercial free ride at 10 and not 8:30, and let her chat more and also play some interesting stuff on a one-off basis, that would help the station immensely. Essentially a low-talk morning show with plenty of music and talk about the music. It would really appeal to the music g33ks that don't want to listen to TRG's Lad Mag Radio, or AM political or sports talk, or the People Magazine CHR shows.

The best move would be for Cox to change 97.1 to a CHR format. That is the most popular format that makes the most money. Every station should be CHR.

Absolutely! ..."Atlanta's ONLY ALL HIT MUSIC Channel, HOT 97.1!"

No, it would be "Atlanta's NEW ONLY ALL HIT MUSIC Channel, HOT 97.1!"

Every station should be CHR. ? You really want the "Atlanta Radio Sucks" thread to grow by leaps and bounds, don't you?

Lad Mag Radio.......I nominate that for new formatic definition of the week.
All of the popular morning shows are spoken versions of People Magazine.
Still waiting for the radio version of "Entertainment Tonight" It would be America's new favorite morning "news" format.....
