Is the party "over"?

Is the party over? 97.7 went silent today.

It's on now. Perhaps they had technical problems earlier.

They must have a back up tower in SA some where, the main tower is silent.

KLTO has no backup facility in the FCC database. But wouldn't the backup have to cover the community of license of McQueeny?

I was picking up a faint signal of KLTO on the way to work this morning. They must either be on low power, or have a back up some where that is not listed in the FCC data base. Do they have a LP station in San antonio?

I was in Northwest San Antonio last weekend and got them just fine, if not better. On the way up to Austin though I noticed the signal was a lot worse than usual.
My only guess is it's a backup.

No, Fred. A "booster" that is used as an aux transmitter, or just a plain aux transmitter is only restricted to having a 60dbu contour that is completely within the Main transmitter's 60dbu contour. (A "booster" also has to protect 1st adjacent stations.)

They don't have to even cover the City of License, and can be used for ten days without notifying the Commission.

WOULD a booster cover any of San Antonio?

In theory a booster wouldn't cover any portion of San Antonio that the main KLTO-FM signal doesn't cover and under the rules it can't (or specifically can't "extend" coverage). In practice, on the other hand, the booster signal might be dominant (via the "capture" effect) momentarily and/or in isolated areas where the main signal's strength for some reason is less than that of the booster. That's certainly nothing that could be easily described (or documented) as a dependable "booster-only" or "mainly booster" signal, however.

To compare that scenario with an existing one, here's what the booster and main signals look like for 104.1 (never mind the old KRIO call letters): https://licensing.fcc.gov/cdbs/CDBS...?appn=101102113&qnum=5100&copynum=1&exhcnum=1 With those contours and somewhat similar terrain in mind, it's doubtful that a booster for KLTO-FM would be of much benefit.
