is there a compelling talk or sports talk in NY?

Try any number of personalities on both Sportsradio 66 AM (WFAN) and ESPN Radio 1050 AM if you want sports talk shows.
I lean towards AM 66, personally.

As far as newstalk, WOR has Joey Reynolds overnights....and usually his show is a real whackjob. I don't really care for the rest of WOR's broadcast day, however or its competitor WABC 77 AM.
 
I'm partial to sports on WFAN 660AM or talk on WABC 770AM. Best sprts are Mike and the Mad Dog on WFAN and Sean Hanninty and Mark Levin on WABC.
