Is there a Univision station on 870 AM?

Is there a Univision station (in the U.S. or in Mexico) on the 870 AM frequency? I understand Univision has the rights to NFL Spanish language broadcasts per an e-mail I received today from a Mr. Dennis Green in NYC WestwoodOne - "We don’t handle NFL en Espanol. That is done by Univision Radio."

So anyway lately I've been hearing a Spanish language station interfere very heavily (even in Brea North Orange County) with KRLA 870 AM after they reduce power in the after local sunset period between 4:45 pm and approx 5:42 pm. At around 5:42 every day I've checked this Spanish language station disappears apparently because they reduce power. Last night the NFL Monday Night Football game between the Giants and Jaguars was on. I'm sure our Univision Man can respond.

KLSQ can be heard to the East of the Glendale KRLA site in its nulls most any night. It is the only 870 we have. The station is called Radio Variedades 8-70. Format is a mix of talk, sports and Ranchera music.

Univsion owns no stations in Mexico, and never has. It is an American company; no company uses "Univsion" as a name in Mexico.

Some of the Univsion AMs do an NFL game of the week, but not entire schedules.

Thanks David. However, is there an answer as to their power/interference?? Obviously, sunset in LV is a little earlier than in SoCal, so..... Why the interference until 5:42 pm? Hmmmmmmmmm?

Perhaps the Univision board op is a little tardy on the power down.

The station is live.

And it is permitted to radiate the equivalet of about 300 watts towards the WSW, which is enough to be listenable on occasion in the San gabriel Valley with more signal than KRLA, which has essentially about 80 watts towards WWL and the east I can hear KLSQ all the time along the 10 anywhere between the 15 and Indio. It just roars into Banning, which seems to be its hot spot.

David did you not understand what I have stated? That the signal in Brea DISAPPEARED at 5:42 pm????? Right in the middle of whatever programming was running. I have no doubt you picked up their night signal of 430 watts in Banning. I'm not IN Banning. I wasn't there when the signal DISAPPEARED at 5:42 pm. I was IN Brea. I've been a radio junkie/DXer all my life. I know what sounds like a drastic reduction in power and/or pattern change at sunset. I have heard AM stations interfere with a local station in the short time after local sunset and that interfering station disappears also because that station's sunset time is 15 minutes later than my local (for example). Try to catch on, my friend.

This could also be related to pattern change of KRLA, couldn't it? Without knowing what is on the licence of KLSQ, I really don't have an answer... I was offering possibilities. The local sunset in Las Vegas for November is 4:30, so the 5:42 is doubly odd... if the issue is DST, then it is off by 1:15, not just an hour! LA sunset is 4:45 for the month, so there is a chance that KRLA is off, and they are changing pattern at the wrong time, too. I was also a DXer (founding member of IRCA, etc.) and know that this kind of thing can sometimes be less than obvious. I asked the LA chief to check with the Vegas chief... just in case.

Good morning David, how are you?

Thanks for the response, NO it was NOT a KRLA pattern change I heard. For the last few weeks what I described has been happening. I'm just curious about it being a radio nut as you know.
To show you how nutty some of us can be, driving home one night, on the streets of Brea I actually hit a null on a block and pulled over to the side of the street. I did so because it was around 5:40 pm and the KLSQ was totally stepping on KRLA then abruptly disappeared a few minutes later. Then I did the same thing Monday night hearing the football game in Spanish and again they disappeared at 5:42.

I just noticed your edit. Thanks!

Here's one more aside to you. There's a station I believe in Baja California heavily interfering with KSL on 1160 between sunset and around 7 pm. Later it is gone. I remembered in the past you said Mexican stations consider night power/pattern changes to be around 7 pm local regardless of the season.

Yes, Mexico considers "daytime" or what they call "from sun to sun" operation to be 6 AM local time to 7 PM local time. I do not have my IRCA Mexican Log (available fromt he IRCA website) with me in the Desert, but another list I have shows the following on 1160 as the only Mexican stations..

1160 GUANAJUATO XEVW “Radio Sensación” Acámbaro. (2,500/500) 1200-0400 1300-0130 Música moderna en inglés y español. Allende No. 17, 38600 T: (417) 172-19-60, 172-14-88, 172-02-44, 172-02-84 [email protected] (OIR) S/off heard 0400 in November 2003.

1160 MICHOACÁN XEIW “Canal Juvenil” Uruapan. (1,000/100) 1300-0400 Mazatlán 30 60050 MPM-0301 showed on 1160 as “Radio 160” MPM-0304 & 0604 showed on 860 as “Radio 160” WRTH-02 showed on 1160 as “Radio 160”

1160 SAN LUIS POTOSÍ XEGI “La Gigante del Cuadrante” Tamazunchale. (5,000)(1,000/100) 1200-0200* Musica variada. Privada Pemex No. 3, Barrio San Rafael 79960 T: (483) 362-04-25, 382-18-44, 362-18-45 [email protected] (Radiorama) WRTH-04: “Reyna de las Huastecas”

SLP is a hard log in the LA area. I would think the Gto. station could come in, but not very well. Low power Gto. stations are easy DX from the Southland.

Here is an NRC member's CRT list http://www.amfmdx.net/amdx/MEXICO-CIRT-PLUS.doc

And several other Mexican lists are at http://www.amfmdx.net/amdx/corazondx.html

Hope this is useful.
