I'm not a fan of Murphy in the Morning. I do agree they need a change. When I was in Winston-Salem, 101.1 had a signal slightly more powerful than the Charlotte signals, but not strong enough to call it a local signal. It's more like a strong out-of-town signal. It was strong enough to block 100.9 WIFM back in the 1990's. I remember I liked to listen to WIFM at times and had trouble getting it. Some people have reported the signal is bad on the backside of the city's well known ridges and in the valleys. Winston-Salem has very unusual terrain. It's in the lower Appalachain Foothills. Greensboro and Durham are in the Piedmont and Raleigh is in the upper Sandhills. I've always though it was a shame the airport is where it is. I-74 and I-85 should form a V around the airport in Thomasville, opening up the land near Kernersville-Colfax for broadcast towers. Of course it's too late and too expensive to do this now. ;D
If it is 101.1, it will be more like a Raleigh station than a Triad one. That signal has always leaned more to Raleigh and doesn't feel like a Triad station at all. Go where the money is. It is better to focus on one market and when given the choice, money speaks very loud and very clear in the larger and faster growing Triangle market.
Success has been found with going completely retro. Younger listeners love to hear those original jingles and older listeners love the memories. Old commericals and even talk heavy (focus on memories) programing seems to work very well. The more talking, the more listening time you can get, but it needs to be a good balance of music and talk and the talk must be on memories. Personality driven oldies done the way it was in 1969 can and does work. It reaches out to all demos. I wouldn't recommend it if I hadn't seen it work myself and heard it myself. If you're going bring back oldies, this is how to bring it back.
