Is there any money in Memphis?

Ok...just out of curiousity...how much can a jock expect to make in Memphis? How much for the different dayparts? How much do the sales people make? Management types? Weekend jocks?
Speculate please ;D

I got 8/hr and all the Loeb's BBQ I could eat back in 1970. Nowadays, I'll let someone who really knows answer that one. As for weekends.......the worlds greatest weekend talent resides in Memphis. Rob Grayson could tell you more......

Mama told me "if you can't say anything nice..."

I have it on good authority that T&BD, and Y&E are in the Quarter Million Club. D&Z are in the low 100s. Everyone else at those stations are making scale. I wouldn't want to be making that kind of scratch on budget cutting day, and the ratings are down. No pressure there!

I have some doubts about those particular numbers, but...maybe.
If anyone is paying Y&E that kind of jack, those boys had best be putting a bunch in savings each payday, because inevitably, someone with SOME sense will eventually begin to handle compensation for that group.

Even the "cash cows" that people refer to here from time to time don't produce enough revenue to let that large a percentage go to one show. There are formulas to be used that will allow a certain percentage for talent as compared to revenue.

I would find it hard to believe that any of those shows are producing that kind of revenue.
We all already KNOW how those shows have been producing ratings-wise.

If by "Good Authority" you mean that you either sign or cash those checks...I could then better believe those numbers. Otherwise, the only ones that really know are the upper management and the "talent" themselves.
That's because it's none of anyone else's business!

There used to be plenty of money to be made in Memphis. Unfortunately, John Ford and Willie Herenton stole it all. ;D

I'm not trying to get in anyone's business in particular, so much as to see what the paycheck reality is in Memphis. Hypothetically, if a jock wanted to take a gig here, what's he looking at?

That said, why such a difference between Y&E, T&BD and D&Z?

There are probably about 15-20 salespeople in Memphis pulling down 100,000 +.......but on the other hand, there are 20 or 390 more who are barely beating minimum wage. I would not recommend sales to anyone who might be looking for employment in the radio biz.

so sales isn't recommended, only 10 people make a good living...
and there's only 6 jocks that apparently make a great living...
what about the rest of them? if those 6 aren't typical, what does morning drive typically pay? afternoon drive? middays? nights? production?

(and DE, you absolutely had the best reply!)

The top morning guys in memphis all make less than 100K A YEAR. However you can live pretty nice on that in the bluff city.

Whoever told you 250k was smoking some expensive crack.

Bottom line, it all goes back to what you should've learned in either broadcasting school, college, years on the job, or from mentors or collegues...The money in a medium market isn't going to be all that great, plus in Memphis it's definitely a medium market, but with small market pay. As someone else put it, Memphis isn't that expensive of a place to live so you can live comfortably with a pay range of 35K-45K which is around the average salary for production/programming salary employees in radio here in Memphis (maybe a little more or maybe a little less). Notice the word salary, just like any other industry, retail, warehouse, etc. you'd be surprised how many people in radio are just part-time hourly (I work with some who earn 9 bucks for 40hrs a week, but I know someone who gets a whooping 25 bucks for only one 4 hr shift per week) . It is what it is. Gotta take the good with the bad, but if you come to town well travelled with a good background, talent, and work ethic in radio, try to set your own price..If you're up and coming, brace yourself, nobody said it was going to be easy.

Indeed. I've been in my position now for three years. I don't make near what that other person said was average and am back to split shift.

That's right, you're split now. Are you still able to make it to work if the power goes out? ;D

(Sorry guys...inside joke)

Good, because I think we need to send the mobile unit to an accident that is 78 miles away and affects nobody in Memphis. ;D
