Bottom line, it all goes back to what you should've learned in either broadcasting school, college, years on the job, or from mentors or collegues...The money in a medium market isn't going to be all that great, plus in Memphis it's definitely a medium market, but with small market pay. As someone else put it, Memphis isn't that expensive of a place to live so you can live comfortably with a pay range of 35K-45K which is around the average salary for production/programming salary employees in radio here in Memphis (maybe a little more or maybe a little less). Notice the word salary, just like any other industry, retail, warehouse, etc. you'd be surprised how many people in radio are just part-time hourly (I work with some who earn 9 bucks for 40hrs a week, but I know someone who gets a whooping 25 bucks for only one 4 hr shift per week) . It is what it is. Gotta take the good with the bad, but if you come to town well travelled with a good background, talent, and work ethic in radio, try to set your own price..If you're up and coming, brace yourself, nobody said it was going to be easy.
