So for the past week all I have heard about in the mainstream media is Don Imus morning, noon, and night... Yet not a peep in here about it even after the guy gets suspended and now on the TV side, canned... ???

What is wrong with you people? There is a damn Sanjaya American Idol post on this board but not one word about this whole Imus situation?

Did anyone listen to Imus today to see what he had to say about MSNBC and the whole firing? Granted the guy is on AM radio and maybe nobody in this area really cares, but it is the hot radio topic and I figured somebody would have a comment or two....

A lot of Imus posts on the "national tv", "coast to coast" radio, and "New York" radio posting section down at the bottom...

Is Imus on in the SEATTLE market? No. So...your confused that he is not being disussed on the SEATTLE board?

I'm lost. ???

PS....I've been in/around radio since I was 12 years old. I have heard of Imus (thanks to Howard Stern) but I have never heard his show once.

He HAD been available EARLY EARLY via MSNBC, until today, and streaming on-line. KRKO dropped his show a couple of years ago. KXL Portland had been carrying his first 2 hours live until this week, but quickly abandoned him when this controversy exploded.

His firing strikes me, a fan of his weird mixture of politics & humor, as much too much, stirred up by influential pressure groups. The pressure on sponsors to pull out of his show is what motivated the move to fire him, despite much improved ratings for MSNBC. Because national advertisers aren't so influential in "local" radio, CBS Radio may be able to ride out the storm & keep him on the air.

Or not. Now that he's officially been canned, I bet he'll resurface on Sirius or XM after a cooling off period.

Good bet, Shark.

Look, Imus is probably now at the peak of his national recognition. Kind of a strange way to get there!

However, one complication with the Imus to satellite thinking...with the upcoming proposed merger, not sure satellite wants or needs anything controversial right now.

I curentlly work for XM.....doing production for a show that as soon as I would say the name of the show, you would for sure know it. Imus on XM or Sirius? Not a chance in heck.

I would bet a years of my paychecks that he will NEVER be on the aiwaves of XM or Sirius.

It doesn't matter whether Imus is on or heard in Seattle or Belize! His firing has ramifications for anyone in the radio, especially so-called 'shock jocks' and talk show hosts, so why are you lost?? What he said is deplorable....one issue is the hypocritical reaction by politicians, other media persons, minority "spokespersons," et al, in a simple attempt to get their names in the national spotlight----that affects all of us, not only those in radio. Another issue: Imus' morning show was billing $15 Million for CBS...the advertisers pull out, CBS' and WFAN's revenues are down the tubes; you're a CBS big wig....what'ya do? FIRE HIM. Gotta replace him with someone who can restore that lost revenue, right? It's all about economics, period! And, Ben Dover...you hit it on the nail...WHY no mention of Imus until your post?

Yep, I bet Andy at KRKO is thanking his lucky stars that he dropped the I-man long before the controversy. He's still facing appeals on his signal upgrade project. This week's Radio World had a nice article chronicling his struggle to get zoning permits, etc to allow his 50KW project to move ahead. The last thing he'd need is a group of pickets in front of his bldg.

This racist crap is nothing new for Imus. WNBC once had a billboard and print campaign that featured a "pimped-out" Imus with some "ladies of the night" hanging off his arms. This was way back in the 70's and NBC didn't seem to mind the $$ he bought in back then...

Even though Mel Karmizan and Imus are longtime friends I can't see any rush to get him on sat radio. He's got to be pretty top heavy in the upper demos too. Not exactly what the Sirius/XM boys are looking for and certainly not the controversy they need in the midst of trying to sell consolidation to a skeptical congress.

So you don't think what happened to Don Imus has any impact on local radio what so ever? Come on there are plenty of guys in the local market shooting their mouths off, and you think the backlash of the Imus firing from MSNBC & CBS radio won't impact how these guys do their shows???

There aren't many people on the caliber of Don Imus. He was syndicated on radio and on a cable news station. He was a big fish, and the politics involved was tempting to Sharpton and Jackson. Despite of their own clear and irrefutable hypocrisies, they know when there's an opportunity to step in front of cameras.

Imus' comment also fit nicely to fill in the gaps between major, recurring news stories. The media was in-between Alberto Gonzalez news, politics were relatively calm because Bush is on another vacation and news in and about Iraq was mundane (despite troop deaths, and no disrespect to them at all).

Sharpton and Jackson are getting hammered about the rap music industry, with everyone wondering where is the outrage. They haven't had an answer about that, other than "a meeting" on this upcoming Tuesday. And we likely will hear little about it because Alberto Gonzalez testifies to the Senate on the same day.

Will there be a ripple effect in radio? Yes. But the problem is that enforcement and "catches" will be on a local level, and not as juicy and not in a media market that will get Sharpton or Jackson the air time.

Perhaps the next people who should watch out are Limbaugh, Savage, Beck and O'Reilly.

Oh, and here's a nugget: Imus lives...on a So-Cal 1,400 watt AM blow-torch:

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/washingtondc/la-na-kcaa13apr13,1,3906038.story

But KCAA has a very accessible streaming signal. The only way to hear Imus hereabouts if you didn't arise before 6 a.m.

FYI--KCAA 1050 AM, Loma Linda, CA will rebroadcast ,in its entirety, IMUS' 4/4/07 show from 6-9A PDT this Monday, April 16th.
They have a very good streaming sig as mentioned above.
BenDover...your reply above (#12) is on the money--again!

Ben Dover, I get your point, but when you posted orginally the story was just beginning. It has since become a major story and almost everyone in radio is talking about it.

The sad part for me, is this may expedite the demise of radio. If our industry is demoted to just a music service with different brand names, we won't last long. I'm not ready to write the biz off just yet, but this episode kind of brings home the inevitable irrelevancy of our medium. Live streaming and targeted ipod delivery is the future. This whole Imus episode, while not major, will just hasten the transition. :(

BINGO! Episodes like this definately give cause for companies to look for alternative (safe) avenues of programming for their air time and it will water down the entertainment value of the final product because they fear losing revenue or paying fines.

At some point the FCC has to establish some clear and meaningful guidelines so that the folks at the end of the microphones do not have to live in fear that at any moment their whole career and financial future could go up in smoke over a word or statement that they said on-air.

Established guidelines and a penalty process might sure things up and allow the jocks to climb out from under their consoles and talk a little bit...
