Jack?
Not entirely correct. If you've ever REALLY read my posts, it's not Jack I'm so "in love" with, but the Variety Hits format in general. The Jack stations, in my view, are not really the best examples of what this format could be.I have more respect for the Arch in St. Louis, The Peak in Phoenix, Louie in Louisville because they're not (as some would describe as) 'smarmy' as Jack's approach and what I've heard of these stations and what I see on their playlists tells me their music is focused a lot better. In a time of "me" in the us, I'd have thought the Jack's would have at least created the perception that they're on for the listeners- the "we play what we want" I think works with SOME of the potential audience, but that sign-on tactic to get attention will wear thin if they listeners don't believe the station is evolving for THEM. I'd have thought a year in, they'd start moving in that direction. For whatever reason, they have not- many are still doing well (ratings & revenue) and some haven't clicked yet.The Jack music approach is too wide and, as I've also said, while I understand why the Jack stations have not added jocks I do believe a personality component will be necessary for the VH format's long-term success and the three stations I listed above may be the only ones who've taken that next step. I also don't believe we just throw the typical morning show and DJ approach on the VH stations and do business as usual with personalities- to me, that would detract from the uniqueness of the format.
