Is there Bias from Talkers and Radio & Records?

This board has criticized Talkers Magazine repeatedly in recent threads for alledged inaccurate surveys and/or for potential bias pro-conservative hosts.

While I have NO COMMENTS as to potential bias in ANY of the publications, some of you on the left might conclude that "Radio and Records" is biased. Look at their 2005 talk radio award winners at this link:

http://www.radioandrecords.com/Conventions/TRS2005/awards/index.asp

You'll see awards from the seminar given to Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Laura Ingraham, Brian Jennings/Citadel, Mark Masters/TRN, Tyler Cox/Salem Radio Network, KFI, KSL, WABC, KFBK, and RUSH LIMBAUGH. On the other hand, Al Franken was there and KGO and its executives got awards.

The question for you, ARE awards given mostly to conservatives REALLY indicative of BIAS? Or, is it just a result of better ratings / revenue / longetivity / entertainment?

I would suggest that the syndicated liberal talkers in aggregate have yet to generate significant ratings and revenue (that is...for Clear Channel, Infiniti, Entercom, etc.). The liberals need to get on larger stations covering not only the city of license but also the suburbs (or vice versa in some cases).

Otherwise, these publications will continue to give awards predominately to conservative hosts. The conservatives are on the 50,000kW ND1/DA1/DA2/DAN stations. Most 50kW stations are OWNED by Conservative networks.

The new kids on the block are Air America and what has evolved from Democracy Radio. They are growing but have a long way to go to catch up with Premeire,TRN,ABC,FOX,Salem, etc. A major obstacle for lib talk is the lack of signal strength. The signals allocated for 50kW day and night often have conservative programming from CC / Infiniti / Entercom / Citadel / etc.

The only bias these awards show are towards success, ratings, ratings, revenue, longevity, entertainment value. I think it has nothing to do with politics or simply being on a 50kw station. They got on those big signals because they were there, first. Rush et al are on some signal infected dogs, although moreso for the TRN & Salem contingents. I'm speaking in generalties, of course. I'm sure in the next few years, the Ed Schultz's, the Stephanie Miller's and the Randi Rhodes' wil be getting their due.

I am not sure what you mean when you say "most 50kw stations are owned by Conservative NETWORKS." If you mean OWNERS, well, perhaps most of the hierarchy is conservative politically, but I don't think that has anything to do how their stations are programmed. If it gets listeners and can make money, they are ALL for it...think of all the CC stations that are now Air America affiliates...yes, they put the format on some dogs, but also some flamethrowers, too. And note that CC has Big Ed on their big "Rush" stations in West Palm and Syracuse.

"Awards" are bogus...

These so-called awards are bogus, nothing more than a promotional stunt. In fact, all awards are bogus. Movie awards, music awards, all of it. Let's hope talk radio remains a free-for-all, without the politics of awards that has ruined Hollywood.
______________

The tail doesn't wag the dog. Talk shows get on bigger and better stations (in fact all radio personalities get on bigger and better stations) by EARNING IT. That means that while they're on smaller stations there's a significanty uptick in their ratings that would make a larger station take interest...even then more than likely starting on late nights. There's no affirmative action plan for liberal talkers that will get them put on larger stations, unless a Fairness Doctrine comes back. Until that time, if Al Franken can blow away Rush Limbaugh consistently, guess what. The KFI's, WLAC's, WLS's, etc. blow out Rush and put Al Franken on noon-3 eastern. As far as "conservative owners", mosyt of the big companies are public, and have thousands of shareholders of all political persuausions. These aren't mom and pops..and if we still had Mom and Pops everyone would be complaining about these "Republican Mom and Pop owners" and demanding that something be done!
______________
OK, I'm gonna vote Democratic next time..just to have a break from liberal whining.
