Is there NOTHING going on in LA radio?

There hasn't been a new thread here in ages. C'mon, insiders (of which I am not) -- there must be something new brewing!

I'm not an insdier, either...but...I think we're all tired of each and every
thread turning into a long-winded argument between Old Gringo and Zumahans.
Each rambling reply takes up a quarter-page...quotes-replies-name-calling...
it's just mind numbing...and God forbid you try to make a point!

There are a bunch of things worth discussing..

1. Muisc changes on KBIG.
2. Movin' / Rick Dees
3. KDAY vs. KBBT
4. KBBT as an urban AC
5. Sol's latest move to country.
6. Nobody even mentioned the FCC concentration in media hearings, which were even carried on C-Span and had an interesting appearance by Sol Levin.
7. Summer book. Old news, but no comments were made.
8. KFI in Summer... why did they fall so badly right before elections?
9. Why does LA's Jack do so much better than any other? Is it the Kevin factor?
10 KFI on "emergency power" for two years and ratings uP!

Of course there are things going on.

I totally agree. I know radio people love to hear themselves talk, but hear themselves write?

Maybe KFI's ratings dipped because of diary placement, could that be a factor?
It will be interesting to see if they rebound in the Fall book because of the elections. You said "right before the elections" ... but didn't the Summer book end around Sept 20th which was about 7 weeks before Election Day. As to their good ratings despite the lower power (25kw??) a non-directional signal on 640 gives good enough coverage for the market area anyway... Heck in South Orange County they're still stronger than any other station day or night.

Picking Nits Dept.: It's Saul Levine and I know you meant to type 'KKBT' instead of KBBT --you still must have San Antonio on your mind ;)

I don't like 540 Country because its AM signal combined with music is too muddy to enjoy.

I took a look at KFI in two prior election years, and in Summer, they did quite well. Could it have been that they droned on and on about the immigration issue, when the obvious conclusion from the elections is that the issue was Iraq? As to "just before elections" maybe the older you get, the less time 2 month seems to be; to me, that is right ahead of elections. ;-)

I don't think they will rebound, if the "what is the issue?" conclusion is right. The book is over the 13th of December, so they had wasted 7 weeks of it talking about illegals all the time, vs. focusing on what voters apparently cared about. With Thanksgiving in the middle (holidays don't seem to favor talkers), likely they end lower, just like summer.

I don't think it was diary placement, as that should only affect stations with limited signals, like KRCD or KDAY. LA has proportionality on 7 geographic zones and a bunch of HDHAs and HDBAs, too. The metro has 15 sample units in total, all of which try to achive precise geographiic represetnation by sample or weighting I don't think it is a diary issue.

I thinnk you are right on the signal, but other posters have mentioned that at 25 kw and a tiny antenna that KFI is harder to get in many buildings... thought I would drop it in as a talking point, at least.

Howabout KNX? They seem to have dumped the ditz in the morning and put Linda Nunez back on, which is a good start.

They also have a pretty clever billboard campaign going on - Think Responsibly.

KKJZ isn't saying boo about all the turmoil going on, although Sean H. is MIA from his weekend shows and methinks he is "pursuing other interests."

Does any one think Ryan Seacrest sounds better than Dees? Does anyone think Seacrest is the next Dick Clark? I know it's a different demographic and psychographic but I hope Rick kicks his ass!

Then ignore them. I for one don't give a rat's ass about whether it's K B I G or K BIG.

My views

Spanish radio does nice.

KKBT vs KDAY. KDAY wins, they have Harvey and some dope a!! Hip Hop talent. KKBT, well....

KKBT as a UAC. Nice idea in theory. As long as it is owned by RO, the actuallality of such a format's success is more of a mirage then Sit N Sleep's new location.

Movin vs KBIG, Movin Baby! Disco is dead.

Jack does great because Kevin Weatherly is a damn smart programmer that knows his audience.

Saul, I love him. He always manages to find a way to get us to talk and flipping his AM frequently helps.

KFI, gee, I dunno. Republicans lost so badly, so mabye the Republican station loses too?

We already talked about the book, right? You did well David, Emmis has the Hip Hop market mostly, and soon the Rhythmic market, and everybody wants to see how much competition KJLH needs(it doesn't as evident by 100.3's ratings, don't call it the Beat either, call it Mojo according to Glenn.)

There, there's my thoughts. No trans gendering or other lifestyles about it

The OC Register did an online survey on 540 Country and the response from listeners has been mixed. Many love the playlist but hate the static and wish the signal was stronger, others complain that the station has no local personalities or local news/weather-apparently Saul is getting his programming sat-fed from some anonymous source.

But, overall, Country fans are pre-setting 540 on their radios.

I get this picture of people tuning the knob to 540, and then pulling out the mechanical button, then pressing it in.

I had an old VW once where the tuning knob wouldn't grab anymore, and I would use partially press the preset on the left (550) and the right (1510) to slide the tuner up and down the AM band.

Somehow, I think people like that will be the only audience for heehaw 540.

Yep, it's a definite throwback. All we need to do now is clear off the land and 'drive them doggies' back to Cerritos.
