Is There Room For Another CHR/Pop Station In L.A. (Perhaps on 93.9?)

102.7 KIIS-FM is mega successful, but it is overly Rhythmic leaning. Even bonafide CHR/Pop smashes by the likes of Sara Bareilles have never been given a chance at KIIS-FM, and the station barely played Pink's big hits.
With the transition of K-Big to a standard AC, and with KYSR now a Modern Rock station, there may be a hole for an adult friendly CHR/Pop station. Either something along the lines of 104 KRBE Houston (which is a pretty Hispanic heavy market), or 93.1 KQMQ Honolulu.
A station that will play Rhianna Sean Kingston and Kanye West, but won't ignore records by the likes of Sara Bareilles, Buckcherry, Cascada, etc.

Movin 93.9 continues to be one of the most underperforming stations in America. Rhythmic A/C is just not working - I don't know how anyone can justify a 0.7 share on a full market stick. I seriously doubt it's top 5 or even top 10 with any demo.

It was when they began to put Hispanics into their callout that their success of recent years came. And the tastes are apparently Rhythmic.

I would agree that a mainstream CHR would perform better than Movin', but KIIS would still beat it.

I find it a little ironic that KIIS won't touch Daughtry when:

Daughtry= highly successful American Idol finalist
American Idol = Ryan Seacrest
Ryan Seacrest = KIIS

I think 93.9 would be a great fit for something a la 104 KRBE (minus some of the rock gold) or KQMQ.

Could it beat KIIS? In most demos, unlikely...but l agree it could pull much better than a 0.7 12+. Heck, even KFSH (Orange County)and KLYY (Inland Empire) have better L.A. ratings than Movin.

Since 93.9 is co-owned by Power 106, the two could still be used to flank away from KIIS. Power 106 would continue to challenge for young Hispanic females, while the new 93.9 could target the white 25-34 females away from KIIS.

Ironically, that is precisely the kind of CHR format Dial-Global just started. "Hits Now" is Mainstream top 40, with a very good mix of the urban and the sare bareilles, daughtry type stuff. the new nelly is on, as well as metro station, and even a country crossover hit or two. the idea is actually very retro -- whatever's top 40 is on, no matter what style or format. It can go from chris brown to seether to rihanna to sara bareilles to taylor swift.

I dont see Movin going CHR, not until Ricci Filiar leaves, or is asked to leave. They might as well call Movin, Mega 100. And we know what happened to that station after 2 years.

I would agree that a mainstream CHR would perform better than Movin', but KIIS would still beat it.

I don't think it would need to beat KIIS to be a success. It only needs to bill better than the current Movin' format to be a success.

Bingo! Bill better than Movin', and maybe even bring KIIS down a peg, and they'd celebrate.

Maybe they should have stayed country and did country right instead!!

George Strait just had a concert out here. Originally they booked the Home Depot center because they thought they would not sell out. Well they did so they changed venues to the Honda Center and almost sold out there. They probably would have sold out the Honda center if they would have just booked there in the first place and there was not such a crazy fiasco at the last minute changing venues. Even his people had it wrong!!!

Yea 93.9 need to keep movin.

The story with Country and pre-68 oldies is simply an issue of advertiser opinion. Right now their research claims people who in their 50s won't change their buying habits. Ad agencies feel Women 18-35 will ... or at least moreso than those in the country demo (even though there are a lot of 18-35 women who listen to country).

I personally think the agencies miss out on targeting some big audiences for their clients ... but maybe they know something I don't.

In the mean time, there's not as much money for Country as their would've been for Movin' had they pulled an audience in their demo. The trouble is ... I have no idea who their demo is anymore.

First, agencies as a ruel don't determine the age and other demographic targets of an ad campaign... the agency client dictates it based on extensive research on both the heavy users and marketing in general.

The reason 55+ is seldom targeted is that the return on investment is low or negative. That means that an older person is more likely to have established brand preferences, and generating a change requires more advertising than the profit on the sale can cover. Bad ROI.

In addition to Sara, Cascada and Buckcherry not being played, Pink getting barely touched, KIIS barely played another HUGE hit (10 or so times a week at it's peak) in Colbie Caillat's "Bubbly." They missed the boat COMPLETELY on the current 7x platinum Nickelback album's 4 hit singles, not to mention the 4 Daughtry hit singles, along with MB20's "How Far We've Come" - which even KBIG managed to miss! Speaking of Hot AC KBIG, it's not being programmed very well at all at the moment. Some things never change... They're not even on Colbie Caillat's "Realize," OneRepublic's "Stop And Stare," or Gavin DeGraw's "In Love With A Girl." They also didn't play Linkin Park's "Shadow Of The Day," Three Days Grace's "Never Too Late" or Finger Eleven's "Paralyzer"... That's SIX hit songs right there, with only one (OneRepublic on KIIS) getting any airplay from Pop or Hot AC in this market!!!

Over the past few months, I have noticed a subtle shift towards the mainstream on KIIS....it's not a lot, but it's a start. Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love" went into power rotation on Monday (4/21)... something I don't think would have been possible 6 months ago. Miley Cyrus, Jonas Bros & OneRepublic are all garnering significant airplay there with their current hits.

What I'd like to know is given Rick Dees history of doing CHR in this market, why didn't Emmis flip KMVN to CHR/Pop 6 months ago??? I think even a monkey could get this station 3x the 12+ ratings that Movin's getting right now. A smart PD? maybe 5x the ratings. a 2.1-a 3.5? Those numbers certainly beat the 0.7 KMVN is getting now!

That sounds just like the playlist of Dial's new CHR format Hits Now... they're playing all that.

I don't listen to My104 (KBIG 104.3 FM) but I would guess they'd be the closest.

However, interestingly, the new AAA station in LA- The Sound 100.3 is playing almost all of the songs you mentioned or at least the artists based on what I've heard in the 2 weeks and one hour (as of now) since they've been on. From your list, highlighted means I've heard that song, if just an artist is highlighted means I've heard them play that artist but I haven't heard that song (that doesn't necessarily mean they haven't played it, just that I haven't heard it)

Assuming anyone on the planet cares about 12+.
Besides, wouldn't the plan be to have a successful station? Rather than one slightly less dismal.

Since 93.9 is co-owned by Power 106, the two could still be used to flank away from KIIS. Power 106 would continue to challenge for young Hispanic females, while the new 93.9 could target the white 25-34 females away from KIIS.

Emmis' radio properties are designed to be successful and profitable on their own. Why put them into battle for no real purpose? And essentially against each other? Not the best strategy.

More than likely, the listeners of the morning show EXPECT Ryan to play Idol artists since he hosts AI... since KIIS is suppsed to be LA's hit music station, by not at least playing them in the morning show, CC has done the station and Ryan a HUGE disservice the past couple of years - I mean how much is a test spike going to hurt? You can't exactly see how listeners are going to react if they don't at least have the opportunity to hear a song. And since were on the "country" subject, Miley Cyrus (who many associate with Country) is doing quite well on KIIS with her current song "See You Again." Given "Before He Cheats" enormous call-out scores, it should have at the very least been given an opportunity on KIIS.

Well, Movin' certainly isn't profitable for Emmis, and given that CC has left a good hole between KBIG and KIIS and isn't programming either station very well at the moment, a capable programmer could knock KIIS down a point or more in their core in 6 months or less with a middle-of-the-road CHR and a tight playlist. If anything, this would force KIIS to move AWAY from being like KPWR and force them to be more mainstream, allowing KPWR to increase their ratings. Emmis taking Movin' the CHR mainstream route is a win-win situation on both sides of the equation for them!

Come on now! Miley and Country???? I don't know of any Country stations that are considering adding "See you Again". just b/c her dad was a Country singer doesn't people equate her as one. The female Top 40 listeners are probably more familiar with her Hannah Montana character if they have kids, and she's seen as pure Hollywood Pop.
