Is this a big loss?

I'm interested in learning more about how Ikea's decision not to come to Buffalo is affecting radio sales in Buffalo.

Is this a big loss? Or is it no big deal?

Let's see, Ikea was spending $0.00 in Buffalo radio. Ikea will continue spending $0.00 in Buffalo radio. There are two huge -er really big Ikea stores near Toronto, with the closest one about an hour away.

Ikea has concentrated on very large, expensive urban markets in the US, which is the audience that their low-cost, upscale-replica furniture appeals to. People that buy Ikea want the upscale look, but can't afford the upscale price. A lot of their furniture is designed to maximize efficiency of tiny urban apartments.

Buffalo has some market for Ikea among students and young adults, and might have been a nice fit for our sizeable college population, but Buffalo is a much smaller market than most Ikea markets.

Looks like the effect will be minimal to me.

Nope...should pick a better city

Being an Ikea customer from the day their first North American store opened outside of Philly, and having ventured to Pittsburgh and outside Toronto, Buffalo would likely not be a good candidate. I would think Rochester, which is a bit more upscale, would likely be a better fit. However, like Buffalo, it might be too small a maket for them, though it does place one in an area away from Toronto, and well outside their other stores.

A friend with some knowledge predicted that IKEA wouldn't be interested in Buffalo. It has to do with demographics and income per household. Translation......we're not yuppie enough.

And as far as radio goes IKEA might be likened to WAL-MART. They don't do much!

There is no great cry for Ikea in Rochester either. I think we're too traditional a market for an Ikea to survive, especially when a Value City furniture store can exist in this market with their god-awful product line. I think most Ikea stores do better closer to the coasts. Buying their stuff in many southern red states would get you turned in by your neighbors to the Homeland Security hotline for being a suspect class. :)
