I've been curious about something for a long time. On a talk show, you always hear "...you just stole my thunder" is this from a coincidence that the host happens to mention something that the caller called in to talk about, or does it come from when the screener enters your name and location and what you're gonna talk about into the call queue, and the host "steals" the thought.

Generally it means that a caller has been on hold a long, long
time and the idea or opinion he had intended to introduce had
just been brought in by a caller who go there first. In this
circumstance some callers might elect just to hang up but
most don't.

The phrase about stealing thunder came from a playwright in
the late 1800's who invented an off-stage device to simulate
the sound of thunder.

His characters were frequently copied by others and even his
plots. Finally another author uncovered the secret of the
device and used it in HIS production.

After seeing the copy-cat play he remarked to the press
that not only had the author stolen his characters and his plot,
"He even stole my thunder!"

Now, what has this to do with Boston Radio? Well, like Boston
Talk Radio, it is...as Shakespeare once nearly said: "Full of sound
and fury, signifying Jack."

Are you kidding me? You hear this on a MULTITUDE OF STATIONS. Heard it on Paul Sullivan the other night. <font color="red">[EDIT - REMARK UNCALLED FOR]</font><P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by cabradio on 09/06/05 01:11 AM.</FONT></P>

First I'll try tying it in to Boston radio....It goes with Boston radio because it is a phrase heard on every single talk station in the city, as well as country. Talk radio is part of radio. This is a radio board, so it's appropriate to discuss it. Second, which Boston stations have I heard this on? See first explanation.
 
From my experience it is generally an indication of a lack of talent on the part of a talk host to do that. He or she should be well versed enough to expand on a topic if a caller introduces it first. What I hear more often is talk show hosts who dismiss a topic because they are incapable of handling it. The current 'BZ crew is real good at that but someone like Jay Severin, like him or not has the intellect to extrapolate on a subject and make it his own. Generally, the bozos at RKO will just make fun of someone who is intellectually superior to them - which is not hard to do...

It happens on WEEI all the time. Probably just callers who are on the same wavelength, so to speak.

The phrase might help some to regroup before going on air. No need to be snide.

Radioaddict, as I recall, you are the one trying to out talk show hosts as gay and spreading rumors about others having alcoholism. You were never personally attacked -- you were called out for attacking.
