Is this an alarming trend?

God is a humor fan..

When they came for Christ in the garden... "He asked who they were looking for???" Of course, Jesus knew they were there for him, but he asked... "We come for Jesus of Nazareth".... Then a mighty wind/breath of God knocked them down onto the ground (pardon the liberty of study in the Greek) and He asked, again; "Who is it, again, you seek????" That would make those religious leaders as mad as a nest of hornets! That was great humor in a dark time....

Perhaps a different view of the situation might help. At a point in the past, almighty, holy God killed nearly every human being on earth. People He had created in order to have love relationship with, and they had become so sinful that except for a small handful He destroyed them all.

I know we've softened that story to a few fluffy sheep and lions for the kids, but in reality it's the death of most of humankind. I just don't think there's humor there. Plus the crude language and bathroom "humor" in the movie didn't help, and I wonder if when Christian oriented stations push such movies they lose credibility.

Some people have told me that these are exactly the kinds of things that for them, turn them away from Christian oriented broadcasting.

Until you remember that Evan Almighty is not the biblical account of Noah. It's more like a parable. While it uses the biblical story as a motif, it not a biblical account.

For instance....(spoilers ahead)...

The Flood is not a worldwide one, it seems to really emcompass a very small air in or around Washington D.C. The flood isn't desinges to judge the world as in the biblical account, but too teach Evan the main character a lesson in civic and enviromental responsiblity.

.....

What wrong with using a biblical motif to tell a modern story???

Maybe the idea of a wise, soft spoken God that Morgan Freeman portrays compared to the rage-a-holic God that some evangelicals and fundamentalists portray...who didn't scream and condemn the live-in couple that I suppose the "true" evangelical God would have.....hmm..which portrayal is more like Jesus. I have said before just because certain groups yell the loudest and have the most money and broadcast facilities to do the yelling, and claim to be the exclusive worldwide brokers of God's salvation, doesn't make it so.

I guess I can opine on the above wide views of God... Just my convictions as I work my Salvation out, daily (as Paul concludes in his life)... God of the Old Testament...Made us, and gave us reign.. We kept blowing it, even after he gave the Ten Commandments (not suggestions) on the Mount to Moses... So, alot of bad things happened due to man's blunders and if God did it, then He did....If it were the Tribes blamming God, they did.... I see Alan King in my story of the the Hebrews getting out of Egypt.. He gives them the opening.. Says to go from "A" to "B" and enjoy the Promised Land...Turns to his Angels and says; "I know my kids!... They'll just get lost and wonder around and around and not keep their trust in ME and I don't want that, but I give them this place and freedom to choose...But, I know my kids! (What a great blend of Calvin and Arminian thought, in action)... It's like the way "Billy" goest to the garage to get the rake Mom asks for in "Family Circus".. He never takes the direct way, he wanders..But Mom still loves him, though frustrated at his lack of direction.. Along comes the New Testament and the sacriface of Jesus and His Blood for our "OOOOPS, We Did It Again"...No bear coming out of the woods to eat the kids who mocked the Prophet.. But, an opportunity for Mankind to understand the Love.. Many were shocked by the details of the Cross, but He went to it and went through it... Thus, we can accept the gift He paid for or reject... We can really be lead of His Spirit to love even the ones that hate us, because we were as bad as they... We earn not His gift, but accept and then learn to be more like He... Simple and to the point.. That's my take and where I am at in my "Walk" with Him.... Hummm?? I still remember those childhood Sunday School and Vacation Bible School leasons that made the Old and New Testaments come into my mind and heart, so clear.. I remember my Christian Ed degree from College that took it deeper and challenged me to understand what I 'thought' I believed... It continues that I will not stop learning and yearning for more, until I get to that final home He has for me.. It's not a Baptist, Pentecostal, Methodist, Catholic or Protestant thing... It a GOD thing in the process.. It's sure easier for us after His return to The Father to catch and believe than those that walked in His work and those that longed for his coming, the first time... God is not just Love...But true Love is GOD... If he loved me as a sinner, he loved everyone.. Even the worst of the worst.. They choose to accept or deny the gift... "Christ Tasted Death For Everyman!".... You may not agree, but I only state this from where I am at, today... Not selling 'wooden nickels'.....

You done hit the nail on the head gr8!...Again we are reminded to judge not or we ourselves will be judged....Good Call!

Was in Russia, Ohio this past Sunday to see Matthew Kelly speak..He gets right to the point about our culture of death and uses wit and wisdom instead of a judgemental finger or by ranting.

I remember Morgan Freeman apperaing several times on "Touched By An Angel".. a series I sadly and wholeheartedly miss in an era of "reality" shows, exaggerated tabloid-styled rhetoric and I can go on all day.. Again good call.

Does anyone remember the movie "Joshua"? Christian movie tale about Jesus coming to a little town. Third Day was in it. We gave the CD soundtracks away and tickets. "Joshua" was a great story until Jesus decided to meet the Pope, I sort of shut my eyes there. The description of Jesus was awesome though!

How about "Hero" which keeps popping up. This is today, people don't communicate in KJ, they need to understand that God is right now. I haven't seen Evan Almighty but I keep hearing it is good. I did see Bruce but only when it came on Encore a few months ago. I went to a church that frowned on it at the time, I now go to church that is alive. I was surprised at how good Bruce was. Too bad that I missed it when it first came on the scene.

The movie Joshua was based on the novel "Joshua" that was written by a Catholic priest. He wrote a number of Joshua novels, all interesting and worth the read. I don't understand your comment that you shut your eyes when Jesus decided to meet the Pope. I found the story refreshing as this novel found positive and negatives in all various forms of organized religion, much as Jesus might have found today if he walked down the street visiting the various churches in a given town. This Catholic Priest didn't use the Joshua series to bolster Catholicism, but to point out how Jesus might look at today's various churches and temples. Also how Jesus sought out those with a heart for God rather than a heart for religion with it's rules and regulations, etc. The movie wasn't as good as the book, but then most movies are not as good as the original book, but none the less the movie was worth watching.
