Is this even legal what BMP is doing to KHHL?

How is this even legal what BMP is doing to KHHL? All the time Silent. Can't they FINALLY do something with it??

You know I'm in Houston, jras, so I have to ask does the station id at the top of the hour? As long as the station says KHHL-Karnes City once an hour, the rest of the time can be spent in complete silence without reprocussion.

If that's not happening, and you'll need to listen from :50 after the hour until :10 of the next hour, you're next step is to contact the FCC and file a formal complaint. Heck, I'd even call the BMP headquarters here in Houston if you want to hear the station return to the air. I know it sounds ridiculous, even assinine, but they may not even be aware that the darn thing is silent.

I've not heard anything at all, not even an ID. I bet, if I turn up KHHL on my stereo and play it for a couple hours, I won't hear a thing.

I could care less about the format of the station that it was, but if they are going to have it on, then keep it on something. If they keep it off at least then I could get 103.1 in Austin. I listened at :50 and still nothing.

Jras, I agree 100%.

I'll see about contacting BMP from their website.

Is the transmitter on, or is it simply off the air?

If off the air for an extended period of time, they must notify the FCC. It is quite legal to go silent; there are long term requirements to keep the license and various waivers are possible. One example is a loss of transmitter site, where long absences may be allowed if permits and construction take a long time.

The transmitter was on, just was not broadcasting any audio. It was broadcasting in mono also. I noticed it was cut off last night not broadcasting now.

Here's what I got from BMP this morning, after emailing them last week.

Kevan,

Thank you for the email. We have had connectivity issues for some time now due to failure on at&t’s part with our ISDN connection. The problem has been on the telco end. Currently we have a standard POTS line carrying the signal from San Antonio to the remote transmitter site in Karnes county on a temporary basis. As for Deportes we have moved that programming to 720am on a permanent basis and are just simulcasting the product on 103.1 until we decide what to do with the frequency.

Thank you for your concern.

I just checked KSAH-AM, it has indeed flipped to ESPN Deportes programming. I think I'll email him back now and see if he'll put a format San Antonio's missing on 103.1. No idea yet what to suggest, though.

Is the 104.1 in Pearsall also ESPN Deportes ?

KSAH 720 from San Antonio probably puts a better signal over Austin than KWNX 1260 from Taylor ever did with ESPN Deportes. I wonder if this move will lead to any change for the FM 92.5 ESPN Deportes in Austin.

I believe KSAH used to consider Austin a 2nd market about 20 years ago. However, at night, it beams what little signal it has toward Mexico and the ocean to protect WGN.

Does sports talk in general have an audience at night? I'm thinking the target audience is home watching sports on TV.

After a gig sometimes we would tune into ESPN radio on a AM station that is strong enough to listen at night.

Pretty much all forms of spoken word programming (and many music formats) have no significant listeners at night!

I know what he will probally put on 103.1, The True Oldies Channel, or 103.1 The Spur. Or just to get people mad 103.1 The Big Talker ;D They could revive Jammin but I don't think Clear Channel Austin would like that?

And that is why it is perfect on a AM radio station which has less power in the nightime. Makes sense.

Back to the topic, they finally have audio back, it sounds OK, hasn't glitched yet. I don't care for the format, don't understand it. But at least it's going instead of not going.

Actually sounds like they've got KHHL's audio going through a phone line / 8000 kHz connection.

Hopefully they won't run out of minutes this time. :p
