From the Letters section of the Star:

"On June 26 at 9:30 a.m. I was shocked by what I heard the Radio NOW 93.1 FM morning program. The three disc jockeys were running a promotion about the shooting of rapper "50 Cent." The two male jockeys would ask the female a question about 50 Cent and if she got it wrong they would have her turn around and shoot her with a loaded BB-gun in the butt. They kept promising her it wouldn't hurt. They shot her several times and she was screaming and begging them to stop.

Maybe this was all a big joke to the disc jockeys, but to their listening audience it sounded very real. I am horrified to think that a radio station is promoting to children the use of a loaded weapon, telling them that it won't hurt, and forcing this on a woman. This is wrong on so many levels. They owe this community an apology!"

It's freaking childish. It's amazing how dumbed down morning shows and their listeners get... why someone would actually enjoy that kinda stunt is beyond me..

Have you seen the Howard Stern show lately? This is mild in comparison. But since this is broadcast radio, then they do need to tone it down a little. Kiddies may be listening.

I don't see anything wrong with this type of radio (hey, if the person whose having this done to them agreed to it, they should reap the consequences), but what keeps going through my mind is whether this type of radio is appealing to 12-34 year-old females.

This bit could probably fly pretty successfully on alternative, hot talk, active rock, or any other format that appeals to younger males (eg. Opie and Anthony, Howard Stern, Mancow, and such). CHR...where their main listening base is young females, maybe not so much.

In case you're interested, here's Marco's response which is posted on his MySpace account:

"Well, it seems we get more pub when we're on vacation! Some moron named Wendy Sommers had this article in todays Indy Star. It's at the bottom of this blog so, feel free to check it out..just page down. Listen here Wendy, don't listen to our show, you obviously don't 'get ' us. So, do me a favor and check out 93.9 the song...a station where they ask forgiveness when they say 'darn'...there's nothing wrong with that by the way, I pray, all the time...but it's not what our show is about. We try to have fun with tyhings going on inthe world...yes, Shannon was shot with a bb gun...get over it Wendy...she was not pleading for her life...or crying...I'm sure it hurt, but so does my hangover right now. In other news Wendy, nobody gives a d*m* about your d*m* editiorial...as a matter of fact everyone at the station was laughing about it...Just ignore us Wendy, go on about your day, do something good in the world and for the world. You're an idiot. And even dumber, everyone will get to here your article....and maybe we'll follow up with an editorial of our own. If anyone knows Wendy....please forward this to her."

Now for my two cents: while I would not want something like this happening on a station I worked at, it fits the "high school" feel of Radio Now 93.1. That's what gives the station it's appeal. Here's a concept, which Marco hinted at in his response: if you don't like what's on the radio (or the TV for that matter) turn the station off! There's many other choices in the Indy market! Try another station!

In addition to not listening to Marco or to those who want to imitate him, I think that a good response in Marco's case is to print copies of his response and then send them to the advertisers who run spots on his show. Simply ask, "Is this the type of bigotry YOU want YOUR BUSINESS to promote? How do you think the association of your business with this type of thinking could possibly affect sales?"

The stunt is stupid. Almost as stupid as the bigotry comment. Please explain it.

Need look no further as to why MP3 and CD players are so prominent. Most morning show jocks THINK they are comedians - but sadly, most are just idiots.

This woman's letter reminds me of the Howard Stern complainers who hate Howard, but listen hours at a time to make sure they catch all the offensive material.

So the minute they started shooting this chick in the ass, the radio didn't get switched off? Hmmm...

When Howard first hit it big, they used to do the same thing: "I hate Howard Stern. Why, just this morning on the way to work I heard him say...". Huh? If you hate him, why do you know all of his bits? And I bet even though you listened for hours at a time, you didn't write it down in your diary, did you?

Guys like Steve Dahl and Howard Stern made morning shows an art form and anything since their hey day has been a copy of a copy of a copy (and not a good copy). 'Nuff said. ::)

Keep in mind that America is a "CULTURE OF DEATH"....just watch CBS most evenings
and you will see what I mean. Just watch CNN, MSNBC, FOX NEWS or any other
news outlet with their coverage of the slaughter in Iraq and you will see what I mean...
particularly what US forces did in Fallujah several years ago. So for a morning
DJ to even pretend to shoot someone is no surprise. It should make the NRA rather
happy. The culture of death is seen most evenings now on local stations here in
Indy...what with one killing after another...all with handguns...all with hate and
frustrations. Know that America is a CULTURE OF DEATH and none of this will
seem out of line to you. The street killings, the Iraq occupation, the 43,000
Americans killed on our highways each year, and of course our DeeJays shooting
women in the rear end. It just all ties together.

Nah, it just shows they have lame ideas... "Let's make a prank phone call to some woman about her water and the amount of times a day she takes a BM." Shooting a cap may have sounded clever, but the whole show is perfect for the demographic they are seeking, 12 year olds and JuCo drop outs. Intelligent people need not apply. And if you think I have a bone to pick, I don't. I like almost every other show in town, I just can't stand people who dumb down society. Please quit talking about your birth control. Thanks.

Maybe Jeff S should drop his pants on monument
Circle. Maybe this will help his ratings. Great
Radio. Makes me wish I'd chosen a different
line of work

D-Man... Court's out of session over on the WIFE thread, so I had to take a break from "Broadcast Law" and check out a more amusing room. First, I said "Oh no, it's Radio [email protected]" What a disaster that station is--for radio--and for Emmis... Especially if it drives Jeff to "drop his pants on the Circle". OMG--I've been laughing at your post for the past five minutes and almost soiled myself. I'd need to drop mine--to dry them out. Let's find Russ 'n get him drunk... Talk him into helping J.S. pay down a little corporate debt... Sell 93 to Russ... Bring back the Buzzard... Then 101.9 goes back to B'burg to run the Hendricks County Swap-Shop.
