IS THIS THE DEATH OF JONES?

Nock said:
Anyone out there trying to listen to AC's station on a mac platform? Can not get the stream to work? File loads into Itunes but does not play?

Nock

Hey Nock. I am really sorry you can't pull in the stream ???. I contacted Loudcity tech support and they suggested what I had suggested to you before (Itunes). If you have Windows at work, give me a try there. I think you'll like what you hear. I have trimmed back my vocals and really want to reach out to the old fans of JSJ, because I know how loyal those listeners were (I was one of them for over 10 years over a crappy 32kbps Internet stream). Until I found this board a couple of weeks ago, I had no idea people were as much into Jones' programming as I was. Like I have mentioned to Mark and DD, your suggestions are welcome. I couldn't listen to WQJZ 24 hours a day (although I would have liked to try it one time ;D), so I am sure there are a number of Jones' artists I may have missed ;).

Take care, and hope you can get on "The .wav" soon!

Chris

Chris:

PLEASE add these cuts to your station if you can , they're out on iTunes now as well. A superb guitarist long forgotten....

RICHY KICKLIGHTER >> WITHOUT YOU (In The Night CD) + MIRALEENA (Kings Highway CD)

Jones used to play these cuts all of the time. Even though Jones was #1 they kind of started to forget their core audience over time.

BIG thanks!!!

Great stuff, Mark! I also added "After You're Gone" from his Just For Kicks CD. That's the great thing about this station. Now that things are up and running and my collection has been loaded, it's relatively easy and cost-effective to maintain by adding digital files on an ad hoc basis. Amazon's files are 256K, and as long as you are compressing and streaming at 96K or above, the majority of your listeners will not notice a degradation in quality from true CD quality sound. There are also some creative ways to get the most out of your Internet stream. I pump mine through my stereo receiver via my laptop. I also have a small, handy remote unit called the Roku Soundbridge that can pull in my Internet stream by WiFi that I hook up to a pair of high-end powered Polk Audio speakers. The sound quality is quite good, and you really get to enjoy the music in the comfort of your own living room or on your front porch instead of being stuck at the computer.

PLEASE keep the suggestions coming!

Chris:

Just superb. :)

I'm curious, how are you keeping up with new stuff to be added?

Jones did a nice job by adding a lot of unknown artists such as Mark Hollingsworth (who XM Watercolors would not play, I dumped them soon after) and James Gabriano, Andrew Neu, etc to name a few. I would think the better known artists would be easier, but keeping up with this stuff would have to be a full time job.

Anyway, thanks again. You've attained a new full time listener. I haven't heard anything else out there as good! ;)

It will be a challenge Mark (seeking and adding new artists), to say the least. Sure, anyone can keep up with icons like Richard Elliot. But there is so much good music out there. In the past, Jones did most if not all of my legwork for obscure artists (I would love to sit down with their programmers one day and pick their brains). Fortunately, I was able to stockpile 10+ years worth of knowledge to help me launch the station. Now that they are gone, I have been aggressively seeking out new sources, with only marginal success so far. But since this music is a passion for me, it is truly a labor of love, so I don't get too hung up on the amount of time it takes me to research and add new music (plus, if it was my "real" full time job, I'd probably hate it anyway :D). BTW, I run a couple of Mark Hollingsworth's tracks from his On The Mark CD. Good stuff. I never would have discovered guys like Mark Hollingsworth, Oli Silk, and many other obscure artists without Jones.

I continue to tweak my programming, and pride myself on being responsive to listener feedback. It's guys like you, DD, and the others who consistently lauded Jones for their Smooth Jazz programming that I would love to have as full time listeners. Never did I realize that there were others out there as passionate about Jones' brand of jazz as I was, that was, until I found this board. It's just a shame there aren't enough of us around to make a difference as far as radio goes. 2008 was sad year for Smooth Jazz on radio. The loss of CD 101.9 in New York was at least symbolically a major blow, and started the dominos falling nationally. Never did I think that Jones would end up a casualty, because I thought by far they had the best product out there (a belief that was validated when I came here). But I took them for granted, and now they're gone as well. But life goes on, so all I can do is try my best to pick up where they left off, with the assistance of you and the other "educated" Smooth Jazz listeners on this board.

Thanks again for the kind words.

Chris

Hey Chris:

Your station sounds good, but I'm hearing some repeat selections, sometimes within the hour.

Thought you'd want to know.

thx

Thanks, Mark. That DEFINITELY shouldn't be happening. The playlist rotation rules I set ensure conformance with industry standards, and my standards are even more conservative. You typically shouldn't hear the same artist within 180 minutes (3 hours - There are a couple exceptions of course, like Basia and Matt Bianco -- that can happen -- technically two different artists as far as credits go, but same vocalist), and the same track within 480 minutes (8 hours). Can you perhaps give me a ballpark where you heard that occur, and I will check my history? I do roll in a couple sets of code where songs are picked at random, and it is not unheard of to hear a song that I played the previous day or earlier in the day. I do this to deliberately mix up the order in which songs in subcategories are played, since I mostly rely on LRP (least recently played track) commands. But the playlist rotation rules should still be enforced and prevent repeat tracks from playing within the given parameters.

I appreciate you bringing this to my attention. Sometimes the Firebird database I use can be tempermental, so I suppose I can't rule anything out. But SAM Broadcaster is pretty reliable, and I certainly have written the code to prevent this from happening.

Hope you are enjoying the programming. I won't lie to you that I am taking extra special interest in the station stats this week (one because I am home recovering from surgery, and two because I know I have some new discerning and educated listeners out there who know what they like ;D). I have already canned a couple vocals and tunes where I saw I lost a couple listeners on the same song, so you won't be hearing them again. How's that for being attentive to listener feedback? :D

Thanks,

Chris

Chris:

Is there somewhere to take this off-line, I'm sure the board would rather not hear my general concerns and ideas about the station.

Plus I've got some suggestions that might interest you.

thx
Mark

Yeah, Mark. I know we kind of unintentionally hijacked this thread. My apologies to the rest of the gang.

Perhaps you can register with Loudcity and PM me to my station account? I think registration is a pretty painless procedure, and they don't ask for personal data.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Chris

AC and majaman, you both are class acts. I enjoy the conversation and the fact that you have the "jones" to know that you can be more detailed one-on-one. But it's fun "listening in" on the chat! Great stuff you've brought to our attention. Maybe you can start a new thread on this. Don't stop!

I just discovered this board and had no idea there were so many other JSJ enthusiasts!.

Spirit -- thanks so much for those JRN/SJ airchecks from Jax/105.5. You don't know how much I love that programming and appreciate your files. I captured them all.

I have a bunch of recorded JRN airchecks of my own.

I first discovered Jones Smooth Jazz on WQJZ (97.1 Ocean Pines/Ocean City MD) while vacationing there in the summer of 1999. Nothing satisfies like sitting on the beach, with sun, sand, and surf and smooth jazz on JSJ. I became obsessed over it. That summer, I captured 2 hours of WQJZ on cassette. My hometown had no SJ outlet. For years I kept those tapes in my car to use on long trips... nearly wore them out.

Back home, I began to listen to WQJZ on the web. At first without realizing Jones was a satelite service, It was a pleasant surprise to discover more Jone's streaming stations all over the country, including WXJZ (Gainesville), WJZT (Tallahassie), WKYL (Lexington KY) and others. These stations were literally all I listened to at home.

In 2005 my wife and I vacationed in Florida to inquire about purchasing a vacation condo down there. On the drive south it was awesome discovering the Jones sound first in Savannah GA, and then in Jax on 105.5. And we bought a condo in St Augustine. Did JSJ influence my home purchase there? Perhaps... 105.5 was constantly on whenever we visited there.

It was very disheartening when they flipped. Of couse I knew Jones was losing affiliates, as it became harder and harder to find JSJ stations on the web. When I learned JSJ was shutting down operations, I finally digitized my 1999 WQJZ tapes. In addition, in July of this year I recorded 5 hours of WKYL (Lexington KY). When WKYL switched to BA in September, I knew the end was near for everyone. WQJZ was still on... so I spent the final weekend of September capturing as much new WQJZ airtime as possible.

I will try to post some of my own files as time permits.

This are the airchecks I have - mostly all non-scoped:

5 hours of WKYL 102.1 (.wav format) recorded in July 2008

2 hours of WQJZ (.mp3) from August 1999 with Debra Lee sitting in for Keith Riker. This tape is excellent, although it has some certain portions of "fuzziness" in the recording due to radio interference.

10 hours of WQJZ (.mp3) from Sept 27-28, 2008, two days prior to going "dark".

This board is now the "only" Smoothest place on your radio! Fortunately I live in Central PA which now does have one SJ outlet near Harrisburg PA (WSJW 92.7, locally programmed and streamed live). It's a decent station for a local one in a smaller market, but can't hold a candle to JRN's polished sound. I really miss those guys.

Thanks again, Spirit, for posting those mp3's.
AC -- also love your LoudCity The.wav stream and can't stop listening now. It's as good it gets online.

Hey smoothguy...

Welcome to our Jones support group! ;D I actually had to read your post twice to make sure I didn't write it! :D

Thanks for the great post and look forward to hearing those airchecks.

Yes, your story reads like mine. I moved here to St. Augustine 3 years ago from Connecticut. I had become familiar with Jones in years' past on WKCD Mystic, CT as well as WPLM in Plymouth, MA when I was at my summer residence in Cape Cod.

Read some of my prior ramblings...I was in heaven that I could hear Jones again here in Jax at 105.3/105.5 when I first moved here. This station was owned by TAMA and they also had another station in Savannah GA.

But then by the time I moved here, stupid Tama started to change things for the worse. First they replaced Keith Riker with, of all people, Bob Baldwin, who started playing his own personal music that was heavier into R & B. After a few months of that, I read there was some falling out between him and Tama, so I thought...great...put Keith Riker back on (yeah, I have a man-crush with Keith, but a real crush with Laurie Cobb whose myspace page says she's 60 years old??!!! (please dont tell my wife, thx). But, no, they put on the PD or MD (whatever) friggin' Joel Widdows, that gravely voiced veteran who I particularly didn't care for. I could never figure out why Tama put him on as well as that weak morning man...insurance salesman Greg Gaines. And then they put this deep voiced dude named Niam who literally sounded like he was going to fall asleep at night...he helped me fall asleep just listening to him. The smartest (and least expensive) thing they could have done was to keep the Jones feed and all would have been good. At least they kept on Laurie Cobb and used all-Jones on weekends. I think Tama wanted to set up some of their buddies, though. I really do. Where did that get them? I don't think Tama even exists any more.

I used to pick Joel Widdows brain...met him at one of those remote broadcasts at an open house as well as a Euge Groove concert at Jacksonville Beach. I used to rave about how great Jones was (actually hinting maybe they should go with them full time again).

When they switched to BA all hell broke loose. I started firing off an email a week to Joel expressing my outrage that they switched. I figured he hated my guts by this time as he finally stopped writing. He wrote me back placating me with mostly b.s. reply's like "we'll look at your suggestions, blah blah blah" Once he thought I was spamming him LOL!

At least I had the internet stream from WJZT in Tallahassee. :)

Now, all is gone. :'( BA is hideous. I don't have that happy feeling anymore down here in St. Augustine like I used to. My wife notices I'm more down than usual.

I'll get over it, but it's as if a close friend died. Went thru the same thing when WCDJ Boston changed as well as WKCD in Mystic.

I should't let this stuff affect me so much. But it does. :'(

BTW, I'm over here in Heritage Park off S.R 16. We should meet over a drink someday and reminisce about Jones!!! That would be great!!

Mark

Hey smoothguy. Looks like Mark beat me to the punch as far as a formal welcome to the Jones Smooth Jazz support group! :D Thanks for the kind words about my station. It's a work in progress, as I have not been on the air for 4 months yet. But I am slowly building my listenership through word of mouth. The loss of Jones created a HUGE void for me, both as a listener, and as a programmer. They say imitation is the best form of flattery, and I make no bones about the fact that my playlist is a near complete plagiarism of Jones' old playlist. With them gone, finding new music from more obscure artists has been a challenge, but I am trying my best to stay ahead of the curve and have made some progress.

I think my Jones story is chronicled somewhere in between Mark and my rants. In a nutshell, I first discovered JSJ on WQJZ 97.1 circa 1997. My folks had retired and built a home in West Ocean City, MD, not far from Ocean Pines. I grew up and was raised in Anne Arundel County in the southern suburbs of Baltimore. I recall how my parents and I would lament about the fact Ocean City didn't have a Smooth Jazz station, as we were huge Smooth Jazz fans and regularly attended both the Capital Jazz and Rehoboth Beach festivals every year. Then one day my Mom called me ecstatic to tell me that Ocean City finally had a jazz station. I already enjoyed visiting my folks down the beach, but once WQJZ was in the mix, it became almost euphoric, like I was at some remote B&B on the shore with not a worry in the world. The only other major smooth jazz station in the market at the time was the long-running WJZW in Washington, but their programming was heavy with A/C and could never hold a candle to WQJZ. But it was the only viable option on the radio. Then WSMJ in Baltimore launched in 2004, and initially I thought had promise. They were spinning Nick Colionne and Euge Groove heavy at the time, and I thought it was a fresher sound than WJZW. But then, much like the others that preceded them, they gave way to the "target" demographic and started to hit the A/C heavy. Not surprised both of them went belly up, but I never thought Jones would go!!!!! I always had WQJZ to lean on via the Internet. I also knew of WJZT in Tallahassee and would listen to them when WQJZ had problems with their stream.

Then came September 30, 2008, when I started to smell a rat. I heard Laurie Cobb on the air give her "send off" and that it was her last day. I then started thinking like a businessman and said, "Crap, it's the end of the month and the end of the fiscal year. Something's going on." I started scouring the Internet and that's when I found this forum and I was shocked that the news of the Jones demise was known for months and I was completely in the dark. I was absolutely devastated, and in an almost weird twist of fate, my folks sold their beach house a couple of months ago and are now living back across the other side of the Chesapeake close to their grandkids. Their life down Ocean City essentially began and ended with Jones Smooth Jazz on the radio down there. In a lot of ways, my father was the inspiration for me to launch my station. Earlier this Spring, when my folks were spending more time up here, they witnessed the death of WSMJ in Baltimore. Over a glass of wine after dinner, my Dad said, "Chris, we should get our own Smooth Jazz station going (as in like, something with a studio and on either the AM or FM dial :D)." God bless my father, who is major old school. But I said, "Well Dad, something like that is going to cost a hell of an amount of money that neither you nor I have." I said I had the music, but not the infrastructure to make something happen. That's when I started to do some research on Internet radio, and what it would take to get something up and running. When I told him it was far more reasonable than I thought, I went for it. The irony is my folks don't even have broadband yet, so they can't even pull in my stream ;D! My Dad doesn't want to go with Comcast because he is afraid they are going to find out he's been getting over on his cable (kinda like the Seinfeld episode when Kramer is trying to duck the Plaza Cable guy :D). So he is going to wait until Verizon Fios is in his community, then he'll be able to tune in!

Anyway (and I have told Mark this both privately and publicly), I was pleasantly surprised to see as many guys on this thread bummed out as much as I was about Jones Smooth Jazz going away. Not to pat ourselves on the back, but I think there is something to be said for the fact that we had good taste in music. ;)

Thanks for checking out the station, and as everyone here knows, I encourage your suggestions and feedback. BTW, I too have a major "man crush" on Keith Riker, and hope he is doing well. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with a 60-year old Laurie Cobb either :D. Sounds like she is embracing her new career move, so that is nice to hear.

Peace,

Chris
aka, AC Tones

P.S. Don't worry, cklw800. I'm not going anywhere! I found some pretty educated Smooth Jazz listeners on this board and I want to stay in touch with everyone.

Guys, thanks for the warm online welcome and introductions. I'm not a BOARD surfer, typically. In fact I READ the boards far more than I ever respond; but this one captured my interest immediately.
Glad to be in the presense of like-minded others. I'm not radio expert or guru, I just know what I like and don't like. I'm just an amature who knows far less about the radio business than either of you.

Spirit - first, what a coincidence... Our Florida place is just up the road from you. in 2005 we looked at some units (I believe in Heritage Park) just off SR-16 around Woodlawn. Assuming that's the location you mean.

I plan to retire in Florida in about 7-8 years. In 2005 we decided to "lock in" something permanent down there while I could still afford it (Wish I had waited now... but.. at the time property values were escalating exponentially.) Anyway, our broker took us around JAX and St Augustine to look at various locales in our price range. One place we stopped to investigate was Heritage Park. At the time, they were just clearing ground and they had no actual models to view or tour, but we were impressed by their presentation and carefully looked over lot plans there. We did consider buying there.

Our broker later steered us a few miles north to World Golf Village area which is where we finally purchased. We love it. The condo we bought was a re-sale unit, fully furnished -- a huge plus for us.

We both love NE Florida, visiting as often as possible. Finding a Jone's station there was a huge, plus. The radio was on constantly, morning-to-evening in our unit, in the car, at the beach, wherever we went, JSJ was on the air. Is was the only station we ever turned on. And I do think it influenced my purchase decision to some degree.

I can't fully express the emotional response I always got from Jone's broadcasts. I can only speculate it was some kind of madness. Listening to JSJ was as good for my mind as a 30-minute workout was good for my body. Coming home after a stressful day at work putting on the stream was like having two glasses of fine wine for the effect it had calming me down. It wasn't just the music itself, it was the strangely harmonic and narcotic effect of John Evans, Lynne Hughes, and Keith Riker's, professional speaking voices.

BA and other SJ stations don't elicit this kind of response in me. I can't exactly pinpoint what it is. The BA music mix is definitely different for one thing. Secondly, it's not that I dislike Dave Koz or Ramsey Lewis either as personalities or as musicians. I don't. I like them both.... But they are NOT RADIO personalities. Dave Koz doesn't have any RADIO PRESENCE. He doesn't move me. I remain totally non-plused at everything he says and would rather he not speak at all! There is no enthusiasm, and no emotion wells up when I hear him, unlike any of the Jones personalities. I don't want to know about his gigs - or upcoming cruise events - or concerts - or personal Trivia about other musicians on the Radio. I want hear well programmed MUSIC..! That's why I listened. And that's what Jones offered, without the blather.

AC - very much enjoying The.wav here as I write this. Your mix rotation is really excellent, and I much appreciate the effort you went to make this a reality. Jone's lives! I was up until after midnight last night listening. Enjoyed reading both of your bio's. I'm 58 years old and I've been a jazz fan since my college years, even before it was cool. I was an early fan of Gino Vanilli, Tom Scott, Crusaders, and Donald Byrd. Although I never was that BIG into jazz until I discovered SmoothJazz on Jones in the late 90's as I related elsewhere. Jones was responsible. I was captivated by the music almost instantly. Honestly not sure if I would be the fanatic I am today without Jones. I started collecting SJ CD's shortly after discovering Jones and have never looked back. I've almost given up other forms of music. Most of my music is digitized, so it's never far from me anymore.

Wish I had time to write more here, but several matters are pressing at the moment Perhaps later, guys. Thanks for writing.

-Randy (aka Smoothguy)

Hey Randy. I can't agree with you more. I absolutely love Norman Brown's music, but it is painful to listen to him behind the mic. And you hit the nail on the head about Jones. It was the total package, from the music selection to the RPs. They had a tremendous presence, but in a calming way. No matter what kind of day you were having, they were going to find a way to take the edge off. John Evans was great too. And I would be remiss if I didn't give Steve Michaels some love as well. I am going to find a way to track these guys down by e-mail and personally thank each and every one for hours of pure listening enjoyment. As far as contemporary jazz goes, it was the total listening experience.

You guys may be somewhat surprised to learn that I buck the "target" age demographic that radio stations use to choose programming. I turn 41 in December (and absolutely refuse to listen to the crap they play on radio these days), and I am the father of two young children, 6 and 4. I am a lifetime Maryland resident, and I'll probably end up dying here one day, although Florida is tempting ;). My first exposure to contemporary jazz was in the early 1980s when I was in high school. My eldest brother was really into it, listening to the likes of Jeff Lorber Fusion, Gregg Karukas (before he was on anyone's radar screen, and when he was a Maryland resident, BTW), The Yellowjackets, and Weather Report. It took me awhile to embrace it, but when I did, there was no turning back. My first and perennial love has been Russ Freeman and The Rippingtons, particularly their early stuff. They lost me a little bit in the mid to late 1990s, but I thought Wild Card was a great comeback effort for them, and they kind of sucked me back in. In the 1990s, I started to get into Chuck Loeb, Warren Hill, and Brian Hughes, a very underrated Canadian guitarist who sounds a lot like old Pat Metheny. Then I discovered Jones, and the rest is history. They opened my mind up to whole new world of artists, and I will be eternally grateful.

Thanks so much for the kind words about the station. I am really trying to capture the Jones sound, and it means a lot to me that I am hitting the mark with you guys. I continue to add music on a daily basis, and am striving to stay current. Thanks so much for listening, and please tell your friends about the station. I am completely not-for-profit (in fact, it's turning into a pricey hobby :D), but I get so much enjoyment that folks out there like what I am doing, particularly guys like you, Mark, DD and the others who lived and breathed Jones the way I did.

Talk to you soon.

Chris

It is quite remarkable how our experiences with and enjoyment of SJ vis-à-vis JSJ parallel one another. :)

Randy, I am in complete agreement with your assessment of the JSJ product appeal. Their professionalism, originality, and creativity placed them head-and-shoulders above their competition (XM and Sirius included IMHO).

I can only assume that changing demographics and increased competition (Ipod generation) caused a drop in their listenership. It certainly wasn't due to a diminishment in the quality of their programming.

DD™

Randy, welcome to the board. Any tape you have of Jones would be welcome, especially pre-2000. My first listen to JRN was in 2000 through KZSP's stream. I live in St. Louis, and while we had a local SJ station at the time (WSSM), I preferred the Jones format.

I have also never actually heard the Jones format on a terrestrial signal. There was an affiliate located south of Springfield, MO, but the station flipped to Regional Mexican the week before I visited the area in May 2005.

Jones kept many of the elements that brought me to the format back in the 1980's. Most terrestrial stations shrunk their playlists down, and or added elements I didn't like.

Chris, in regards to sampler CD's, I purchased many of the sampler discs that KKSF, KTWV, and KJZY (Santa Rosa, CA) sold. When KKSF was owned by Brown, their samplers were excellent (volumes 1-7). Even CIWV in Hamilton, ON released a sampler when they first signed on in 2000.

Jazziz Magazine has also been offering CD's on a monthly basis since 1994 (and released CD's sporadically between 1988 and 1993). These show up on Amazon and Gemm.com fairly often.

I also enjoyed a song never heard before which immediately followed ...

Dee Lucas - Bayou - Something to Ride 2

Keep up the great work.

Thanks, DD. I can't recall exactly how I stumbled across Dee Lucas, but once I heard the track, I had to get it out on the station. Love Late Night Sessions!

Nice comments from guys like you and the other loyal listeners of JSJ on this board are the ultimate compliments, and help me keep that drive to get better. I really want this station to ultimately embody everything we used to know, love, and lost as far Smooth Jazz radio goes. I just wish I could wave a magic wand and great music could fall on my lap. It takes a lot of time and effort to stay current, but I am doing the best I can with what I have. Once again, if you or any of the guys on this board come across some music you think would work on my station, PLEASE let me know on my station page or my brand new MySpace page (which admittedly needs A LOT of work :-[).

Chris
