IS THIS THE DEATH OF JONES?

smoothguy said:
The radio was on constantly, morning-to-evening in our unit, in the car, at the beach, wherever we went, JSJ was on the air. Is was the only station we ever turned on. And I do think it influenced my purchase decision to some degree.

I can't fully express the emotional response I always got from Jone's broadcasts. I can only speculate it was some kind of madness. Listening to JSJ was as good for my mind as a 30-minute workout was good for my body. Coming home after a stressful day at work putting on the stream was like having two glasses of fine wine for the effect it had calming me down. It wasn't just the music itself, it was the strangely harmonic and narcotic effect of John Evans, Lynne Hughes, and Keith Riker's, professional speaking voices.

BA and other SJ stations don't elicit this kind of response in me. I can't exactly pinpoint what it is. The BA music mix is definitely different for one thing. Secondly, it's not that I dislike Dave Koz or Ramsey Lewis either as personalities or as musicians. I don't. I like them both.... But they are NOT RADIO personalities. Dave Koz doesn't have any RADIO PRESENCE. He doesn't move me. I remain totally non-plused at everything he says and would rather he not speak at all! There is no enthusiasm, and no emotion wells up when I hear him, unlike any of the Jones personalities. I don't want to know about his gigs - or upcoming cruise events - or concerts - or personal Trivia about other musicians on the Radio. I want hear well programmed MUSIC..! That's why I listened. And that's what Jones offered, without the blather.

Randy:

I'm truly speachless after reading this excerpt from your post...I couldn't have said it better myself. Jones SJ was on at our house from morning till night...in the car, outside on the patio...you name it. IT DID HAVE AN IMPACT ON MY DECISION TO MOVE DOWN HERE BELIEVE IT OR NOT!!!
BA is moribund. You have pinpointed the reasons far more eloquently than I ever could have.

Have you or any of the rest of you guys seen the movie "Close Encounters..." you know...those people who found out they weren't the only one's who had a close encounter...I always thought I was the only person on Earth that actually cared about Jones smooth jazz...I felt that most everyone else listening probably didn't even know the difference from their programming or BA for that matter when they left...it's truly gratifying to me that even a few people know about what happened and found an outlet to discuss it.

It's more therapeutic than a shrink..and I'm not kidding.

Mark

p.s. - Randy, yes..I'm located off Woodlawn Ave in St. Augustine!!!!

No kidding, it ALMOST influenced me to buy a mobile home down Ocean City, MD, after I learned my parents were no longer going to live there. We're not crazy, are we guys? :D I recall driving eastbound on US 50 struggling to pull in the weak signal in Cambridge, MD. My wife would get so irritated with me because I forced her to listen through static for 15 miles because it was starting to finally drown out 97.1 in Washington. Sometimes it wouldn't come in crystal clear until about 15 miles outside of Salisbury, MD. But then it stayed on, and on, and on. My folks had one of those Bose Wave radios, and JSJ never sounded better. I think you guys may recall me saying my folks also had a hot tub out in a well-landscaped, very private back yard, and I swear to God I thought I was in heaven out there with a glass of wine chilling to the sounds of WQJZ and staring at a full Moon and the stars. And it seemed that the longer the night went on, the better the music got.

OK, Mark. I have an idea. Me, you, Randy, and DD are going to hook up at a convenient yet-to-be determined location somewhere in the lower 48, drive across the country to Colorado, and like that awful Kevin Costner/Elvis bankrobbing movie, storm the "vault" at what was JSJ and walk away with the booty!!!! :D We obviously are deranged without our JSJ and need medical attention, so they'll be hard pressed to put us away for life. It would be a crime of passion, and I am convinced the jury will rule in our favor...LMAO

After that, we can pay a "visit" to Kepler and give him a "piece of our minds" for the damage he has done to the format. ;)

Sadly it's not a rumor. It is in Radio and Records. No more Jones Radio Smooth Jazz.
sorry everyone, I should of also looked at Radioandrecords.

Also saddly to say, I recently emailed Kirk Stirland a few times regarding their "Bright AC format. For those who are familuare with Dial-Global, you can listen by telephone to their current six 24/7 formats by telephone (for free) by calling an 1-866 number
He emailed me back and told me to keep in touch.
Then when I heard that Dial Global brought out Jones Radio Programming, I emailed him and Spencer Brown telling them how excelent Jones Radio "Smooth Jazz Station" is. They did not respond. I also gave them some ideas to try and play some oldschool smooth r&B like Anita Baker, One Way, and Alexander O'neal. But I got no responce.

They are making a big mistake on that

sorry
