Is this the DX Opportunity of a lifetime?

If anything pops up on 1170, let me know.

Won't be too tough to snatch Tulsa. Was WWVA running IBOC? If so that could clean up 1160-1180. WWVA will probably be back on with much lower power soon..interesting to see how well this gets out. I remember WHAS, Louisville losing their tower in the 80s and broadcasting from a longwire. DXers did get them at long distances.

yes, they were running a very nasty IBOC that gummed up a good portion of the dial near me

Too bad it'll probably back up by the time TA DX comes into full swing. The 1200KW VoR transmitter in Tbilisskaya, Russia would be a nice catch, as would the 600KW Radio Sawa operation at Al-Dhabbaya, in the UAE (actually, I've picked up Radio Farda from this transmitter location on 1575kHz, last season.).

There doesn't appear to be any Caribbeans or South Americans on 1170 powerful enough to make it up here...although, catching any of those would be pretty awesome!

I guess I'll have to settle for trying to bag, KFAQ Tulsa OK.

Where are they transmitting from and how strong are they?

Hang on a moment, that I'm not sure of, I'm next door monitoring 1180 at the moment. ;D

Ya...WWVA is not throwing out very strong right now, that's for sure!

They seem to be a little stronger than usual in Cincinnati, they might not be directional right now, that would explain it. It's fading in and out, when it's in I can hear it clearly, but when it's out, I hear nothing. I go to college at Kent State and WWVA was a powerhouse at night up there, I'm curious as to how it comes in now.

Will try it tonight from Columbus. Around here when WWVA goes directional at sunset, it disappears entirely.

At this moment, just before 8pm EST, I'm picking up South Asian music. Presumed to be WWTR Bridewater NJ, which at 250W, is an interesting daytime catch, being just a tick under 300 miles from my location.

The way I read this is that they're using "temporary equipment," probably a single stick at their licensed site according to a post on the West Virginia board. They're apparently operating at greatly reduced power and I figure that an STA request was filed promptly, although it hasn't shown up on the FCC site yet. An STA might be granted that would allow them to operate with up to 12.5kW non-directional (or maybe a little less), subject to interference complaints from other stations.

A slide-show of the destruction is here: www.wwva.com/cc-common/gallery/display.html?album_id=244870

There's also a good photo at the WWVA website that offers evidence that it was straight line winds that brought the towers down: www.wwva.com/cc-common/mainheadlines2.html?feed=119921&article=7439986

Update: WWVA was nowhere to be found from Newark, 30 miles east of Columbus, around 9:30 last night. It was subject to very deep fading as early as 6:30, almost two hours before local sunset. Depending on when I get out of work tonight, I will try some more DXing. Expected to be a clear night with lows in the upper 50s so hopefully conditions will be ripe!
