Is this the end for WJIB?

Also cell-phone companies have offered me a measly $1700.00 a month for such.

By the way, the amount that BMI wants is much larger than what the Herald article stated. It's really about $1927.00 monthly, not $1600.00.

It's hard to reconcile these two statements, if money is the real issue.

I'll toss this out to everybody....including Bob B.

"How long is it going to take for the music license fee police and I'm talking everybody from ASCAP to SESAC...to realize that eventually they'll price themselves out of a particular market? The larger radio stations might be available to pay their annual "pound of flesh" that's required in order to keep a music format in existance...but what about the small and medium markets that are barely squeaking by?"

And before anybody answers with: "If a radio station or group can't afford to pay all the fees, they don't deserve to be in radio?" THAT ARGUMENT IS A BUNCH OF CRAP!

Maybe a few of the "big boys" should seriously look at where some of the broadcast problems have gotten out of control? Two sources I can think of are the FCC and the music licensing gestapos! It's clear that as long as radio stations continue to maintain the status quo...they'll happily squander the additional dollars!

If enough radio stations refused to pay more than a certain annual fee for the use of music....and that percentage wasn't based on their audience numbers, market size or annual revenue...what would happen? ???

The current foolishness in our federal government and what's important to some of the idiots occuping 'chair space' is obvious. Maybe it's time for the broadcast rules to be re-examined? And in some instances...ELIMINATED!

I vaguely remember a year or two when radio played only Stephen Foster tunes (and things of then similar vintage) because licensing agencies overdid it. All that nostalgic music was long since out from under licensing.

I doubt it could happen again but is it impossible?

.

That was 60 years ago, when they could get away with playing 30-year-old music. NOWadays, playing 90-year-old music would be appealing to those over age-95. So not likely. Also keep in mind that when an old song is re-done, and ARRANGED DIFFERENTLY, the ASCAP or BMI rights of the new arrangement hold. Therefore, to be safe, a station would have to play a 90-year-old RECORDING of the song. Not too enticing for listeners. --

BTW, my previous mention that WJIB has to pay $1927.00 monthly to ASCAP is incorrect. The correct amount is just over $1600.00/month.
