Is this true??

I am home visiting in Tyler and saw that CBS19(KYTX) is now saying they are the "Local News Leader." Are they no. 1 in the ratings right now?I still think KLTV has the best product

Hype and promotion need not be true to the letter. "Local news leader" could mean they air more commercials during their local news than does the competition. Or they lead other stations in electricity consumption during local news shows. Most viewers know better than to blindly believe every claim a station makes. Good question to ask is "just what do they claim to lead?" in the bailiwick of "local news." Stations everywhere use the technique all the time. Newscasts running dead last in the numbers have been touted as "Gum Stump's Number One newscast." Sure, number one at what?

What's about to get interesting is the WX War brewing now that 19 is about to bring their own 88D online.

"Local News Leader" is a loaded term. To say you "lead" in "local news" could mean many different things. It could mean that more people watch your newscasts than anyone else. It could mean you air more hours of locally produced news than anyone else. It could mean that you air more local news stories than anyone else. It could mean that you break more news stories that your competitors follow up on later. It could mean that you lead with local news on every newscast no matter what is going on in the world that day. I think it is important for stations to be clear about exactly what they mean whenever they promote their news product.

Right about the promotional push in weather. It lends itself to all manner of campaigns built around radar and other bells and whistles that may or may not represent anything really new under the sun.Channel 8 Dallas and stations everywhere 35 years or so ago went on and on about "color radar," when it was nothing more than the same old WW II radar whose echos and returns were converted from black and white to color based on the strength of the returns shown in the radar picture. New? No. Better? Somewhat, at least as the audience perceived it. Promotable? Highly, because viewers never had seen "color" radar images. So to that point it was the best of all weather whiz bangs. In promotion if a station lacking in all respects--numbers, equipment, people. whatever--can convince faithful viewers and prospective regular viewers that is the best to be had, then for the moment one of the ends of promotion has been achieved. But getting viewers and numbers is one thing, keeping them quite something else again.Among many elements, promotion is about perception. Often it is successful based on what it doesn't tell people (no change in radar technology itself, just in how it looks to you) rather than depending on what it DOES say.

I think it's...1) KLTV2) KETK3) KYTXI don't think 56 is ahead of 19 by much, but they are still slightly ahead. I don't think it will take 19 much longer before they take over the #2 spot.19 claims to be the "local news leader" for two reasons....1) Their story count is higher than 7 or 562) They claim to have more "local" stories

No...I absolutely agree. But I think that's how the actual ratings are. I haven't actually seen them, just what people in the biz have told me.19's product if much more professional than 56. I think their anchors are better since Kellie Weiss left too.

56 has a great product in the AM news and PM news (except for their 5PM newscast)East Texas Live is their weak point......they could be doing something better with such a good anchor as Bob Brackeen, and ET Live is so cheesy.....Live at 5 is somewhat good, but mostly poor.......their little local papers segment usually runs stories at least two or three days behind......

Yea...real professionalI was watching 56 one night last week and Danny Elzner was in the middle of his sportscast when he got the the Rangers. He stumbled around for a bit and then confessed that the final score for the Ranges game was written down off screen somewhere. He said he was going to go find it while a pre-produced piece ran on air. When they came back he was sitting on the set with Neal Barton and said the Ranger game wasn't even finished yet! Not only did he not have the score, but he didn't even know that game was still in progress! That was the nail in the coffin for me. I try every once in a while to watch 56, but I can't do it any more. It's just too painful.
