Is Top 40 radio getting better?

There has been some decent pop music lately such as Justin Timberlake and Rhianna over the last year or so. Even Chris Brown has some talent. In the early part of the decade it was beyond embarrassing. If america accepts a higher standard in music maybe top 40 radio can be saved? I dont see it ever being as good as the 80s or 90s, but its getting a lot better compared to the earlier part of the decade, save for Fergie's awful songs of course :)

I think Top 40 has gotten a lot better in the past 3 years. Now in 2008, there seems to be more diversity. Dance is creeping back up, good rock/pop tracks, and the rap crossovers are here and there. This is of course just my opinion.

I think the health of top 40 is in pretty good shape, better shape than Hot AC or modern rock right now.

Yeah, it will never go back to the glory days of the 80s, but I think it sounds more unified than it did in most of the 90s. Balance is good between young artists bursting on the scene (Miley Cyrus, Sara Bareilles, Taylor Swift) and veteran acts (Mariah Carey, Madonna/Justin Timberlake, and Usher).
Obviously, American Idol and related shows is still having a positive effect. The top 2 songs on the airplay chart feature show winners Jordin Sparks and Leona Lewis (from the British counterpart).

I'm not sure if this is the case, but I'm noticing a LOT more music returning to the dancey-style sound.  Think about it:

Britney Spears

Timbaland

Justin/Mondonna/Timbalands "4 Minutes"

Miley Cyrus

among some others...

all feature a club dance sound.

...and now we can add David Guetta to the Top 40 Charts.

WFLZ just recently began spinning Daft Punk's "One More Time" again ... which made me quite happy.

Its def. getting better. The over exposure of Hip Hop and really slow rockish tracks seems to be over. I love that dance is making a comback as well as a major change in Hip Hop to be more up beat and dancey. The rock tracks seem to be of a better quality(ex Seether Rise Above This). There are different sounds coming in like Miley and Duffy. Point blank I feel a lot of people are sick of Hip Hop the way its been and the artists are being very smart and are changing there sounds(Chris Brown Forever, Neyo Closer, especially all of the Timberland tracks). I actually enjoy Top 40 right now better than I have in about 10 years...The only bad thing is the excessive spins programers are giving "a"tracks...I dont think any track should be repeated more than every 2 hours this weird Z 100 trend to play hot tracks every hour and 20 minutes is a little ridiculous to me.
