Rosie is not Right for the TPIR.
HOWEVER, if she keeps here opinions to herself... She MIGHT BE!
Rosie is meeting with CBS execs this week, Bob wants here. So it might be a done deal.
Think of it this way....
Remember how controversial a character Ellen Degenerous was in mid 90s?
Well, a few days ago, she swept the Emmys.
So, I take it back, lets not count Rosie out too quickly here.
Bad analogy. But, nice try.
Ellen Degeneres
was "controversial" about a single issue: that she was (very publicly) a lesbian. She came out of the closet and we never heard the end of it. By the way, you may recall that her show tanked when it became TOO lesbian oriented. People were sick of hearing about it by then. Personally, I think that the public (at large) was simply tired of Ellen because she became a one trick pony. Which was bad for her career.
Since that time, Ellen has kept a lower profile and tends to steer clear of political issues. She concentrates on her talk show and her dry wit. She's actually quite pleasant and entertaining on TV - and you aren't made to feel you're at a political rally when you're watching her either. Sure, we all know what her leanings are - then again, how rare is a liberal in Hollywood anyhow?
But, she does a pretty good job of keeping herself out of politics. Yes, Ellen was most famous for being what she is - and we've generally moved on. It's become a big "so what?"
Rosie, on the other hand, has made herself into a lightning rod. She has been SO outspoken, SO political, SO loud, SO nasty and SO wildly opinionated that there is no way that she can host a show without said show becoming a political football. Many of the things that she has said have been so controversial that the cannot be forgotten by a large chunk of the audience. The audience either loves her or hates her.
No, there is no way that she can host a show such as TPIR without ailenating much of the audience. It would be sad to see TPIR, which has been an apolitical bastion for years, turn into the kingdom of a loudmouthed ultra-lefty. Really, its on par with having Rush Limbaugh as the new host of TPIR - except even Rush isn't as much of a bloviator as Rosie. She seems to be a very unpleasant person (politics aside) and is very unlikeable. She is also a very controversial figure and that controversy has gone too far for her to pretend to be neutral in any way. Her career would be better served by hosting her own talk show. This way, her audience knows what to expect before tuning in and she can become the "hero" of those of a certain political and social stripe.
"TPIR with Rosie" is a bad, bad idea. Suicide, really.
