is v100.7 having tx issues?

Was up in Kenosha today and had WBYT South Bend, IN dominating the frequency. Now home in Lake County and all I get from V 100.7 is a weak, fading in and out signal that's fighting with WBYT and the God Squad translator from Chicago. Very unusual.

Are they having issues?

I was wondering the same thing for days here is Lake Geneva. I first though my bedside radio (Sangean WR-2) was up to something. It's a great DX opportunity, though.

I think the trop effect was very heavy that day; when I was trying to watch something on WVTV, it's signal got overwhelmed from WISE all the way in Fort Wayne, which also is carried over channel 18. Mind you that was on cable so they have a pretty tall antenna, but it's still as not as big as the times I've gotten WEWS and WBNX from Cleveland for a few minutes.

While it's true that there was strong tropospheric ducting that day, as of last night I still had little or no signal from WKKV. With little tropo yesterday, 100.7 was pretty quiet with the exception of a whisper from V100.7 and a stronger signal from W264BF (relaying Godblaster WHLP from IN) with 2 watts from the Sears Tower in Chicago. WKKV usually outguns that signal well down into northern Cook County.

V100.7 is on the air, but not by much from the sounds of it.

they crashed the 100.7 primary tower, to make way for a new one, at the same site.

OK, that explains everything! I knew something was odd, particularly given that, at the site of my new house in N. Lake County, this is normally one of the stronger stations and I am now getting barely a whisper.

Geez, their backup signal is pretty weak - they must not be running much wattage.

The old tower, built for WRAC-FM in the late 70's, was developing mechanical problems for a long time. It needed replacement. If you have not seen this video, check it out:

They are currently using an antenna on the 95.7 WRIT tower on Capitol Drive and Port Washington. Power is unknown, but they are covering the city of Milwaukee OK. The new tower is already at the Raymond site, and they had the lower section assembled yesterday night. Probably will bring in a crane to put that section up.

Spent many nights out there keeping the mice out of the transmitter when it was WRKR. The ownership at that time rented out space on the stick, but never had any engineering studies done for windloads. Also when one client would leave they would not remove the antennas or coax, adding to the loading on the tower.

Whatever they did with the new tower, they did a really good job. KKV used to be the worst station outside of WHQG to get in Sheboygan from Milwaukee (not counting WMYX, which pretty much gets slayed by the WPFF translator on 98.9 transmitting from west of town), but now I often get it with good HD signal quality. The old signal used to be also kind of muddled and bass-heavy, while this one comes in loud and clear.

WKKV, along with WMYX, are the two strongest Milwaukee area FMs into the Gurnee, IL area. I can almost always decode either one of them into HD with my handy-dandy Insignia HD portable. Other Milwaukee FMs usually require a touch of help from the troposphere for that to happen.

So yes, they did fine work with the transmitter for it to be the best up in Sheboygan AND down in Waukegan/Gurnee/Grayslake, IL too!
