Is WEEI-FM a wonder?

WEEI-FM posted a 4.5 percent share for Summer 05. That... with no Red Sox, no Patriots, no Celtics, no Bruins. It's not (or was not) a sports station... but a sports talk station. That's a big share for a niche market.

Next year, with the Sox, it will only get better.

It may even become Providence's top-rated station in 12-plus and key male demos.

Thats what happened in the boston ratings, so yeah, that could happen easy

The local teams winning it all has a lot to do with the station's success. If the Pats had gone 7-9 last year and the Sox were mired in 3rd place with a .500 record, the numbers would not be as high. Let's see if they can keep up the success now that the Sox aren't World Champs anymore and the Patriots facing the possibility of missing the playoffs this season.

WEEI-FM running the Sox games next year will give them a boost, but it won't be as big as a lot of people think. Most people watch the games on TV, either at home, with friends or at a bar or club. Having the Sox will help, but it will be the overall station revenues that will take the big climb next year. If the Sox struggle early next season and fall far back of the Yankees in the standings, having the play-by-play won't help the station all that much...
