Is Wild 101 too cheap to compete with Kiss?

Take a listen and you'll hear what I mean. Yesterday, their drive-time DJ, Ellen K, was out, but they had no one to fill in, but they played liners with her name like they do when she's there--except they went straight to break after that. Keith Kelly is about one of the worst on-air personalities I've heard in a while--his presentation is horrible and sounds canned--if you want to voicetrack, AT LEAST try to make it seem like it's not. Corey Mottley is tolerable but his attempts to appeal to the listeners often fall flat. Music selection is even worse--I've mentioned it in the past so I won't mention it again.
Is this because Wild is too short on funds to compete with Kiss or they're satisfied with where they're at? Anyone who listens can see they're not really trying too hard.
 
It's Easy As 1-2-3...

1. Without Citadel selling spots for them in the US, they have no money.

2. Dave Universal isn't such a "genius" music programmer when the record companies aren't stuffing his pockets with goodies and telling him which songs that they're going to put promo $$$ into.

3. Can-con.
 
Not long before Dave Universal joined 101, there was talk about the station changing format to country. It may be that DU convinced the Dancy clan to stay the course, with the promise of competing with and beating Kiss 98.5. That promise appears empty and about as shallow as 101's ratings in Buffalo which, for all intents and purposes, is where the station is targets its programming. The frequency offers a good signal into Buffalo and its suburbs. But more important, it offers a good signal to the Canadian penninsula and the communities it's licensed to serve. Country would have been a much better and likely more profitable format choice, not necessarily to compete with WYRK, but to stand on its own merit.

Can Con is not the problem.
If the Evanov group ran Wild 101 there'd be no problem.
Z103 vs. WKSE
If Z's signal could reach Buffalo, Kiss would have much better competition.

While your Can-Con contention is debatable, I cannot agree with your contention regarding Z-103 competing with Kiss. Each station has its inherent strengths (and weaknesses.)

You're seeing the issue from a Canadian perspective, which is understandable. There's nothing wrong with that. Living in Buffalo (and being just across the river) we see the issue locally and from a distinctively Buffalo perspective.

One of the critical components of successful radio, especially these days, is localism. It's more than being on the air and talking about the big traffic tie-up on the 290... the stations that will survive satellite, iPods, Wi-Fi and Internet wireless and broadband will be those that are local, live and have relationships with their listeners. In Buffalo, Kiss, WBLK, 97 Rock, WBEN and WYRK are the best examples of stations that have built a relationship with listeners. It's damn near impossible for a Canadian station to build a (long term) relationship with Buffalo and Western New York. To be fair, the same would be true if a Buffalo station attempted to target Ft. Erie, Niagara Falls (Canada), Welland and St. Catherines.

As every jock will testify in defense of their jobs, it's what happens between the songs and when the music stops that REALLY differentiates a radio station from its competition and makes it better than its competition. Star and WHTT are more foreground and seem to be more local than WJYE. Jack might as well be wallpaper, The Lake has its moments, that is, when the crickets and water splashing don't get in the way.[/R]

Not sure how satisfied with 2 :60 spots per hour...I'll agree that the jocks are not up to par, but with the exception of Corey Mottley who is the only canadian full timer, all were Daves good friends at kiss who he's given jobs to. but who doesn't love every simple plan song?? oh wait, they might be his friends too.
